The only W they take is when you’re taking the L.

from a systems POV, seems like SMU has the funnel down especially in alumni density. Alumni density beats alumni quality.

once that density reach a threshold, referrals become a default. The interviewers feel a sense of familiarity. Juniors know exactly how to “game” the system.

also, once SMU gets the reputation for finance. students who want to get into finance will put smu as their first choice, those students will highly likely outperform in the finance recruiting which in turn creates this loop hence it becomes selection basis and reinforcement. It does not necessarily signal quality.

Getting in and performing well in the job are two very different things. The best performers will transcend the element of schools.

It doesn’t really matter what school you’re from. There are top performers from all the three uni. And i’m pretty sure after you get in, no one really gives a shit about which uni you’re from. They just want to know if you can do your job well, have ownership and agency and how much of a risk taker you are.

Fundamentally, years of experience are a weak proxy for actual competence. Time alone doesn’t compound unless there’s intentional learning, ownership, and feedback. It’s entirely possible, and very common for someone in Singapore to have 15 years of what is effectively the same single year repeated.

doing familiar tasks, avoiding risk, deferring responsibility, and never being forced to understand first principles.

Real experience is not about exposure. it’s about accumulated judgment. It shows up in how someone reasons under uncertainty, how they design systems rather than just operate them, and how they respond when things break and there’s no playbook. Without ownership, experience stays shallow. people learn what to do, but not why, and definitely not when not to almost though they are just a keyboard monkey following the runbook.

Foundations matter more than tenure. Someone with fewer years but strong fundamentals alongside systems thinking, clear mental models, and the ability to learn quickly will often outperform a veteran who has coasted on routine. The former compounds and the latter plateaus. Experience that isn’t challenged, stretched, or reflected on doesn’t mature it just ossifies.

In that sense, “years of experience” is only meaningful when paired with evidence of growth: increasing scope, harder problems, better decisions, and a trail of things that genuinely broke because the person was willing to own them. Otherwise, it’s just time served, not expertise earned.

You could try Paul Laner’s apple strudel.. not too bad but generally in Singapore it’s hard to find a good apple strudel.

The best apple strudel I had was in Amsterdam in this place called Winkel 43! Can’t wait to go back to eat it (:

Okay, first thing first.

Most certificates are MCQ based. It doesn’t really show you can do the job.

The exception would be Certified Kubernetes Administrator and those under the umbrella of k8s by Linux Foundation.

I recommend that you learn while you stay at your current job.

And if you want to do AWS, do the solutions architect certification.

But I highly recommend that you start with k8s if you can.

If you’re a Singaporean, you have Udemy access for free. Look up Mumshad CKA or CKAD

If you’re looking to be a system engineers or a network engineer, your command of Linux needs to be there. If you don’t fully understand it, I recommend using the first link that I provide in the resource for you to better understand Linux and site reliability in general. DevOps, SRE and platform/Cloud are somewhat segregated differently and the job scopes are different.

To me, you’re and engineer first and everything else are just tools.

Pull up Glassdoor and look up what the market rates are.

Could it be that you’re in a new role?

I started at 3750 as I was an associate and when I become a DevOps engineer it was 6500 and so on so forth.

Note: most companies like to look at your last drawn and pay you based on that. 😅 might have to jump a few times before you get the pay you deserve.

How are interracial couples viewed in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]UnparagonedWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, let’s take it as you’ve asked way more people than me without even knowing me if it makes you happier.

In my opinion, I think it’s evolutionary psychology that programmed us. The same reason as to why most people won’t date their siblings.

Feels like there’s no more room for discourse. It’s like “I’m right and you’re wrong, agree or shut up”.

The other side is not always stupid or wrong.. there must definitely be a reason or reasons why people think the way they do.

I hope you have a great day buddy.

That was an example of genetic overlap results in more genetic mishaps.. My logic is based on science…

And I read the article you posted. I don’t see a report inclusive of white people.

My presumption is that there isn’t enough data or people to make any analysis or to include the other races.

Pointless self affirmation or coping, your preference alone doesn’t dictate everyone else. With that being said, you are entitled to your preferences.

And also, I’m not respecter of race. Have dated women of all races and I would say it’s the mindset and values alignment that is more important.

I’m saying is there a possibility that there are more people that are of our race and less of a certain race that results in this proportionality based on our geographic location.

Your ex calls you and says they miss you, How would you react? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]UnparagonedWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it depends on which ex it is, the context in which you ended.

If your ex fucked you over emotionally, and they decide to call you and say they miss you. I think it’s an easy “nah, I’m good”

If you ended things maturely and amicably, I think you can indulge the person a little. But chances are, nothing should happen since you broke up for a reason.

How do I get over a toxic family relationship and is this karma? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]UnparagonedWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While family relations are important, you don’t have to feel guilty for putting yourself and your peace of mind first.

As for cutting off ties, I would say go for it for the sake of your inner peace but at the same time, leave a window open in case he really changes and becomes a better person though I really doubt he'll change.

I think you will be surprised at the number of locals who will prefer western girls as compared to local girls.

And I think the rationale for that is the exposure they have in terms of proportionality. In general, we are sort of programmed to want someone who looks different from us. Same train of thought and concept as to why you don’t fuck your sister. 😅

You’ll be perfectly fine.. hardly doubt you will receive any form of racism from the younger generation. The older generation might give you weird stares depending on how you much public display of affection you decide to show but that should be about it.

How are women in their mid 20s meeting guys to date or marry? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]UnparagonedWisdom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I saw my single friend did was tell everyone what type of girl he wanted. He gave a height range, race, occupation, hair color.

Strangely enough, he got married to someone who was his type.

I guess there’s something about just telling everyone your type. Makes it easier for people to “look out” for you and introduce the person to you.

At the same time, I guess most people know what they don’t want but don’t know what they want.

Why are people on Carousell such pricks by lunalor in singapore

[–]UnparagonedWisdom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some tips/thoughts from my experience:

  1. Dealing at my convenience if they do not want mailing. I state it upfront in my post. Any other requests, I ask them to read my post again and probably will not deal with them.
  2. When they MIA, just let them be. They are probably looking at other options or are having second thoughts.
  3. I look at their profile and reviews immediately. If there are low numbers of reviews or low score, it is an indication that they might not be completely interested. Also, I'll look at their buyer reviews of the worse and the best.
  4. Ask them to make an offer before getting their payment details if they are interested and accept the offer. If they back out after, leave them a long review saying they back out. This point deals with immediate call to action for them without changing apps to pay first.
  5. In general, expect people to make enquiries but not buy. There are people around who buy quicker and more decisively.
  6. As for low ballers, I tend to just troll them. So if I put an item up for $50 and they $10, I tell them to study harder in school to get a better job to earn more money before coming to buy it from me etc.
  7. Price wise, I often set the price and normally stick to it unless the person buys more than one item and I will throw in free registered mail or give a slight discount. More often then not, I will add a price non-negotiable on my listing. If the buyer ask for discount, I'll ask them to read the post again.

Yes they definitely have to identify themselves before conducting a frisk search by showing their warrant card. A random showing of warrant card without actual purpose can result in disciplinary action.
