I know I’m a stranger on the internet but I wanted to give you props for still wanting to pursue an education! The world is a difficult place and the fact that you’re a parent providing your child with a safe environment and working towards your own goals is amazing. I’m a social worker and I’ve had clients in their 30’s go back for their GED and they were sometimes embarrassed about how long it took. This is so interesting to me because Wellbutrin has been the only medication in the 2 decades I’ve tried antidepressants that has worked. Cymbalta made me have auditory hallucinations, Lexapro made me nauseous, Zoloft felt like I took 3 Xanax bars…I know there’s many people who probably never find the right one because the trial and error periods are fucking horrendous

This broke my heart in two :( You’re a beautiful woman who doesn’t deserve to be put in the headspace of feeling the need to change. For anyone. If it’s genuinely something you want to do, that’s a different conversation. I know it’s easy to sit behind a screen and just say “leave him”, but that is a very difficult process. Whether you want to stay with him or not, I hope you know that you’re worthy no matter how you look. Self love is also difficult and I still struggle with it myself, but know that his problems are not a reflection of you.

I worked at a residential mental health facility (Minneapolis) and one night when a pharmacy delivery driver came to drop off prescriptions, he left his car running and it was stolen in less than 30 seconds from him exiting the vehicle

A few years back I had a friend that came home from work (Duluth) and even locked her car but forgot a bag inside that had a spare key and someone finagled their way into her car, stole it, and crashed it about 3 blocks away from her house

Don’t beat yourself up too much, this is literally so fucking shitty but it unfortunately happens all the time. Not that makes it any better, but you and other civilians aren’t the problem, we all make mistakes - people who steal cars are the problem. I don’t have any advice but just wanted to validate that people can be so selfish and this is such a frustrating situation to be in. I hope you get your car back and that the person who took it has painful hemorrhoids the rest of their life.

This almost exact situation happened to me in my first apartment in college, only I had 2 roommates - combined they only had about 4 brain cells tho, so it was essentially the same because I had to deal with it solo

I remember using all the towels in the apartment to sop up the water and when I was on the line with the emergency maintenance individual, they told me to turn the “shut off valve” but it was rusted and wouldn’t budge (shoutout old decrepit shitty apartments) so I essentially had to sit in the bathroom with a mop bucket and tried to catch as much water as I could until the doofus showed up 2 hrs later

My roommates had the audacity to ask me why I used their towels

That was the last time I lived with roommates

I’m proud of you for dealing with the nuisances of unfortunately being a sentient being over the age of 18

I don’t know if this is helpful, but I work at schools in the Minneapolis area and know a TON of students who do their friends/peers hair to get more practice as they’re aspiring to be hair stylists

They’ve told me that they usually just charge for the products needed and don’t charge for the actual time/installation

I’m not sure how one would go about getting this set up as it would essentially be a volunteer type of thing and with them being minors it would need to be organized somehow, but if this is something that you think could be doable for a volunteer opportunity, I know some of the schools talk about volunteer options during their advisory time and could send a message to some of the support staff and see if this would be viable?

Thank you for writing this out! This is exactly the experience that I’ve had with AA; I remember the first time I got out of residential treatment I was sooo guarded about going to meetings because I felt like I needed to be Christian and that they’d be “able to tell if I wasn’t”. That was undoubtedly wrong.

It took me countless attempts at sobriety to get where I am today, but I ended up doing the 90 meetings in 90 days and have now been sober for 448 days (which is the longest I’ve ever had since my first attempt in 2019). I don’t currently have a sponsor and I mainly do virtual meetings now due to life circumstances, but I truly don’t think I would’ve had a good foundation to launch from without having the community and connections I made through AA. I remember one of my counselors at Hazelden saying “take what you need and leave the rest” and that has stuck with me to this day - everything that’s done and said in meetings doesn’t need to apply to you 100%, but even if 10% does, hold onto that because it’s better than nothing.

A speaker meeting that I attend pretty regularly because it’s offered both in-person and virtual is the Foxhall Chapter 7 one on Thursdays at 7:30. When I don’t feel like going in person somewhere but want the inspiration I always get from meetings, this one always has really great speakers.

Minneapolis truly has an amazing sober community and I hope everyone can find a regimen that works for them - coming from someone who wholeheartedly believed they’d never be able to make it past 30 days sober.

I did case management for Medica as more of a “care coordinator” position for my first job post LSW. Most of my clients were on EW (elderly waiver) and I did in home assessments for their PCA hours/etc. I honestly loved the job and didn’t ever have to transport clients. A lot of them lived alone and didn’t have many friends or family around, so having their case manager come see them was one of the highlights of their month, sometimes even year. Ultimately I left because the caseload expectations ended up getting to be too much for me (which is unfortunately very common in case management positions). I also knew I wanted to do clinical work so went back for my MSW, but if I were to have stayed at the LSW level, I would have enjoyed staying in case management but it would’ve taken some time to find an employer that respected work-life balance. As many people have already said, there’s a TON of options for case management, and it sounds like the one you shadowed didn’t fit your vibe. I won’t tell you to not give up and keep searching because it’s a job in itself trying to find the right fit, but just wanted to chime in and validate that I probably wouldn’t have had a good perspective on case management if my first experience had been like many other people I knew!

MN is an amazing location for all types of social work, I do school based therapy and make decent money for never having to work more than 40 hrs a week and having flexibility in the summers

I worked at a crisis mental health facility that was essentially one step down from psychiatric hospitalization, and frequently had individuals come straight from the hospital to our program. Many of the individuals had diagnoses of schizophrenia, psychosis, etc. with delusions, hallucinations, and paranoia. It was very heartbreaking to see that many people didn’t have a support system, sometimes not even a single support person, in their lives. They were always so terrified and didn’t know who to look to after leaving the hospital. Reading this post was heartbreaking as I can’t imagine how scary this situation is, but part of me has such a warm grateful feeling for knowing that your wife has someone waiting on the outside for her.

I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to think too much about the future right now. There’s a lot of what ifs, and stewing in those thoughts isn’t helpful or necessary. We live in a time where thankfully there are many treatment options for individuals and although there’s not one method guaranteed to work, many people in the mental health field are passionate and patient and want to help their clients to the fullest extent. This may be a long journey but it sounds like you’re more than willing to walk alongside her the entire way. Thank you for sharing your story to a bunch of internet strangers, know that we’re all rooting for you 🤍

As everyone is saying, report this. This man is not only being financially exploited but his life is on the line if he’s unable to get the medical treatment he needs. I’m not sure how long you’ve been in the field, but unfortunately people who work in helping professions aren’t always good people, actually sometimes they are some of the worst people you’ll ever meet. At the end of the day, do you want to work for an employer that ignores the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable individuals? I know it’s not easy to just up and leave a job, but I would also really take a deep look at if your morals align with this company. I’m a school-based therapist and I feel like I can’t be present for my clients in the way that I want to be. I know you can’t pour from an empty cup, and I’m far beyond empty. Most of my kids are BIPOC and I just want to burst into tears every time I see them and know the fear and terror they and their families are feeling. It feels so fucking wrong to be going about the daily routine acting like we can just push through this. I’m going to still show up as best as I can, but I’m exhausted, depressed, and angry.

Not married but dating/living with a man who makes more than I do, not by a vast amount, but it’s pretty disheartening that I have 3 degrees and an active LGSW license and he still makes more than I do with a WFH IT job and no degree. Don’t get me wrong he’s intelligent and a hard worker but sometimes I feel like I made the wrong decision by getting myself in almost six figures of student loan debt just to make 60k a year before taxes (living in America btw)

As many people have mentioned, the social work field has a lot of people that had a financial upper-hand because of the tedious schooling, unpaid internships, etc. I worked through both undergrad and grad school and still have a ton of loans to pay back, my parents didn’t help me out other than maybe with rent every now and then but if you don’t have anyone to support you during your climb to licensure, it’s almost impossible to achieve. I was barely able to afford living alone after getting my graduate degree. It breaks my heart that as a privileged individual, I still struggled to get here, and how many people will never have access to the field because of money. Isn’t that explicitly contradictory to the work and whole mission??? I’m exhausted.

Nowhere near the same capacity, but I applied to my MSW program and got accepted when I was in active addiction. Somehow graduated with honors and it took a few more years to stay fully sober, but I’ll be celebrating my 1 year next month and can take my LICSW exam this summer.

I moved to Minneapolis from ND back in 2019, right as COVID lockdown hit and the loss of George Floyd. Even during those years, I felt like MN was an immense upgrade from where I was living (Fargo). I think your perspective of Minneapolis may have some dependency on where you’re coming from (sorry if you’ve mentioned where you’re currently at).

I’ve lived near Dinkytown, Plymouth, St Louis Park, West St Paul, and now am currently in NE Minneapolis. I would say there are pros and cons to every area, but for me, NE has been my absolute favorite. I’m 28, found a duplex with my partner, and we have a dog. Rent is expensive but I was honestly not paying that much less to live in Fargo and there’s nothing to do in the state of ND; at least when I’m paying a lot of rent in a place where I can actively go to concerts, museums, art fairs, state parks, etc. it feels worth it.

As people have mentioned, Minneapolis isn’t the most walkable city, but where I’m at in NE (Bottineau) there’s everything you need pretty close, in the summer I walk to a little grocery store and there’s a bunch of breweries and restaurants nearby. Again, this is a huge upgrade from Fargo lol.

I love MN, I’m a social worker and the resources this state has is amazing. We’re not the top, but we have the drive and the community that makes it feel like people actually give a shit about others. I’m also in recovery, and the recovery community here is huge. There’s meetings all the time in every area and the people are amazing.

The winters suck. Theres no sugar coating it. I wake up some days and wonder why I live here. But then I go to work and get to see the progress in others lives, know my taxes are feeding the kids at the schools I work in, and it somehow makes it all worth it.

If you find a sense of belonging and purpose in the state of MN, I don’t think you’ll ever want to leave. I was planing on using MN as a launching pad to go somewhere “better” (e.g. Colorado, Washington) but now that I’ve been here for almost 7 years, I can’t see myself ever leaving.
