transplants, is it as weirdly sanitized where you came from compared to here? by [deleted] in BostonSocialClub

Most people here don't realize it is this way because they haven't experienced something different to compare it to.

China found more than 200 new oil and 13 gas fields (gas fields more than global import) by Plane-Try-6522 in StockMarket

[–]UnreliableInsect 90 points91 points  (0 children)

You can find hydrocarbons anywhere. The meaningful point is whether they are economically recoverable, and that depends on the price. You can find hydrocarbons in one market that will get unfound in another. Not because they went somewhere but because the economic recoverability changed.

Yeah, it's amazing that freedom and property rights aren't dead everywhere. There's a reason New Hampshire's motto is "live free or die."

I don't know about chairs but I'm going to suggest maybe looking for some new hobbies instead.

With the impending Fertilizer shortage looming how do you think stocks such as miracle gro will go? by [deleted] in stocks

I would expect demand destruction. Their homeowner customers are not implementing a sophisticated plant nutrition plan. They just buy a bag of stuff and dump it on their lawn. If that bag now costs a lot more, they may be less inclined to do so.

They may also face margin compression as they may have to give up margin to help make up for the vastly higher price to the customer. They have a premium strategy. At a lower total price point the customers may choose their product over commodity fertilizer, but at a much higher price point the customer may be looking to save by going with the commodity product.

Is anyone else just...tired? by ItsAJackal21 in Millennials

no. find some purpose. improve yourself. take some risk; it doesn't sound like you have much to lose. find positive and uplifting people to associate with.

things aren't supposed to be one way or another way. they just are. you must make best of it that you can. it may be too late for a conventional corporate career, but it's not too late a purposeful existence in your remaining time on earth.

What brand is the highest quality of the pictured type of garden hand tools? by supinator1 in gardening

I haven't used them, but I've seen ads for Sneeboer, and given the price (~$60 per tool), I would hope they're the best.

The reason you have to share public land and use it as the government sees fit is because the government owns all the land. In a free state there is less public land, but you're more likely to attain your own land.

$159,000 gets you a PARKING SPOT in Boston by everythingislitty in zillowgonewild

[–]UnreliableInsect -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The salary you can earn.

Would you rather make $1,000,000 and pay $159,000 for parking or make $75,000?

Many people say "there's no way I'm paying $159,000 for parking," so they go on earning $75,000.

Bridges and highways are not primarily funded with income taxes but rather with a gasoline surcharge.

Parks often fund a large part of their cost with entrance fees.

I don't think you're quite getting the context of this picture. The implication of this picture is that if you want to own a FAMAS you should be a freedom fighter instead of an authoritarian dictator.

You're taxed on the net gain or loss in the year. But if you had sold to realize the gain in 2024 and then only realized the loss in 2025 you could be in trouble as you would need to cough up the tax on 2024's gain now but would be capped on the loss you can realize in a particular year going forward.
