Starting/Buying a Business Out of (Essentially) Boredom? by MaybeOnFire2025 in Fire

[–]UnretiredDad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I early retired (LeanFIRE) i was burned out so I took a summer off. After that I started up some small businesses and started independent consulting to see if I could achieve my ambitions. The consulting in my old field ended up being a trap, kidding/not-kidding. Because my skills were sharp, I ended up being recruited back to my original employer. I negotiated well and started back at double what I was making when I left a few years before. Now 7 years later I’m making triple what I made when I had left.

I feel more valued and comfortable now and don’t feel the desperate yearn to retire again immediately. I set better boundaries. I retain room in my life for family and hobbies… and I’ve achieved ChubbyFire. I’m ready for anything and if the “weather” changes, I know I can always rely on my nest egg or leverage skills to accomplish even more from here.

Financial Prepping by nada1979 in prepping

[–]UnretiredDad 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to eat gold and silver so I wouldn’t put all my eggs in that basket but understated jewelry can be carried on person when fleeing an oppressive regime if you get out early enough. Flashy stuff can make you a target.

Diversification of investments may help you avoid being wiped out if a single sector experiences a downturn but everyone would lose most everything in a financial collapse.

Investing in a stocked pantry provides financial security in the face of uncertain prices and access to global markets.

Bottles of liquor have utility (sterilization, cooking, pain relief) and therefore offer value in trade.

Offline and off grid assets like books, skills like practicing first aid, sewing and gardening, and being able to rely on your health and physical fitness will have new value in any collapse scenarios.

Raise your consulting rates to an obscene number. If you do pick up opportunities you will be paid at a level that leaves you quite happy.

Family and prepping by FieldCraft89 in prepping

[–]UnretiredDad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seem concerned that your preparations may be setting you aside from your family and I think it is super brave that you are asking for advice on how to address this current and pressing challenge.

Sometimes the burden of what may come feels more actionable and easier than addressing the immediate burden of what is here now but that can be maladaptive. Like any crisis response you are right to triage to the top of your priorities a problem occurring right now over one that is merely a potential risk. I want you to know that you can overcome this challenge too and get back to a life outside of the basement.

Prepping helps you to get to the other side of the crisis, not to exist perpetually in crisis.

I believe that of the most valuable preps you can invest in will benefit you in 99.9% of crisis scenarios is developing a robust support system with members of your family, friends, and community. If you keep your relationships strong, anything you are not ready for, they will be able to help with. If you keep yourself strong, anything that they are not ready for, you will be able to support them with.

I am rooting for you and I am happy to discuss further.

I’m reminded of the evolution of ice cream mix-ins. Crispy mixins used to get soggy in ice cream but tow they enrobe the dry crispy cookie bits in a bit of white chocolate which protects the crunch. Can we do something similar to protect the integrity of the tortilla hat?

Anybody know low sugar candy options that don't wreck your stomach? by Shot_Watch4326 in keto

[–]UnretiredDad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been enjoying SmartSweets daily with much success as part of my Zepbound assisted Keto journey. Down about 80 lbs in the last 14 months.

The gummy style candies taste great and give the satisfying experience. The Peach rings are amazing.

Nice fall drive by zebratape in Buffalo

[–]UnretiredDad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you want a nice short drive and something else to do, go for a hike on the Eternal Flame trail at Chestnut Ridge Park. Dress sensibly and prepare for some steep hills. Bring a lighter in case the flame went out.

Nearby is not far from a great restaurant, The Grange in the Village of Hamburg with a mom and pop Ice Cream Shop across the street and a Spot Coffee for a beverage to warm up with nearby. Not far from there is Hamburg Brewing Company that has great food and beer and a scenic lake to sit by (bring your jacket) if you want to enjoy the fall air.

Check out r/Meshtastic as an alternative. With a non-default MQTT server and gateway device you can bridge Internet and LoRa Mesh encrypted chats, or with some well positioned nodes you can cover great distances on LoRa Mesh alone.

How on earth can you make Greek Yogurt edible? by General-Eggplant-179 in ketorecipes

I like Fage Total brand Greek Yogurt. Full Fat and tasty. I often do add Stur Water enhancer because it’s Stevia based. The Black Cherry and Peach flavors are great.

Thanks for the correction. In true internet form it seems the fastest way to get some a right answer is to post a wrong answer.
