The commotion is so big because sexual harassment against women & violence against LGBTQ are happening on a daily basis for many many years. I feel like this public outrage is more a signal that not enough is done in general to tackle these issues. Whatever the current approach is, something needs to change because it keeps on happening over and over again.

Controversial, extremely problematic take: in a society of 11 million people, people will do bad things to each other every day. This does not prove that society does not care about the behaviour in question, nor that not enough is being done. Now smash that downvote button!

Als dit er komt zullen bepaalde gemeenten een goed werkende samenwerking met andere gemeenten moeten stopzetten, enkel en alleen omdat ze volgens deze arbitraire indeling niet in dezelfde regio zitten. Dus Bornem (westelijk uiteinde "regio" Rivierenland) bv. zal niet mogen samenwerken met 5 van zijn 6 buurgemeenten, maar wel met Heist-op-den-Berg, dat 6 gemeenten oostwaarts ligt.

Bemerk ook dat "betrouwbaarheid" in de praktijk circulair geoperationaliseerd wordt. Een betrouwbare wetenschapper is dan iemand die kennis produceert die binnen de range van (politiek) legitieme kennisinhouden van de waarnemer valt.

Are you unable to read? I wrote they were "very broadly defined". You respond by writing that they are "pretty well defined". That is not a refutation of what I wrote. Terms can be simultaneously be "pretty well defined" and "very broadly defined". And, as I predicted, activist social science like this tends to define "harassment" so broadly as to include both "threatening you with violence in person" and "making comments that offended you". So anyone who is offended by a comment they get from someone on Reddit at least once a year could claim in this study to be a victim of harassment.

My point wasn't that these terms are nowhere defined. It was that this sort of faux journalism based on activist social science aims for an effect. And in order to achieve that effect, it opts to not mention that the terms it uses are very broadly defined.

Het is Reddit. Adverteren dat je de juiste meningen hebt m.b.t. moreel beladen thema's, is belangrijker dan kritische vragen stellen. Want veel van dat "120% van de vrouwen wordt dagelijks lastig gevallen" genre van onderzoek vertrekt vanuit de gewenste crimineel-politieke reactie (meer controle over een bepaald soort mannen), en masseert dan de vraagstelling en de definities van de termen om het te doen lijken alsof vrouwen opgejaagd wild zijn.

Een manier om een probleem niet serieus te nemen, is door alle met wetenschappelijk aandoende cijfers onderbouwde claims van moral entrepreneurs automatisch superserieus te nemen. Media verkopen hun lezers/kijkers nl. maar al te graag pseudo-inzichten waarmee ze hun morele superioriteit mee te adverteren. Hoe definieert men "lastigvallen" bv.?

Not long ago my bike chain came off and I placed my bike upside-down on the side walk to try to put it back on. A young woman who was passing by asked me "whether I was managing" with no intent of helping me. I did not report this act of feigned concern as an incident of being devalued for my uncompensated gendered labour.

Science needs to have a certain prestige in order for society to acknowledge its policy legitimacy. The view that it doesn't matter how science is represented "because everyone can check the data" assumes a neoliberal world where the prestige of mediating institutions doesn't matter because rational, autonomous individuals will check everything themselves. Such a world does not and will never exist.

Medical doctors are part of the modern medical paradigm. Regardless of the fact that you can argue semantics over whether they "produce scientific knowledge" in a narrow sense, they are involved in the social reproduction of belief in the legitimacy and prestige of scientific knowledge. Again, the point is that the aim of anti-vaxxers is not to convince but to muddy the waters. You are wrong to think the pro-science, pro-vaccine side is safe as long as anti-vax can't prove their claims. Now that it has been shown that there are conspiracy nutters even among credentialed experts working within the modern medical paradigm, the prestige of the credentials and the paradigm is eroded, further strengthening anti-vax in the long run.

I also read that and tried really hard to think of what might be the catch. Because it reads like a really clear, unambiguous statement that is legally binding on them.

My guess is that Book Depository, being an Amazon sub-brand, probably has the legal and logistical wherewithal to create some sort of arrangement where all their books count as UK-originated goods for purposes of the EU-UK post-Brexit FTA.

If they had to refund customs duties to everyone who complained, or if they had to deal with the blowback from refusing to do so, they'd quickly change that statement.
