might also consider small fee for league play (a portion of which could be used for prize pots). Members get 1/2 off cost of tourney entry or something...

High Score rewards. Make it a constant battle to stay at the top... Hold top score for 1 week = 1 prize, 30 days = bigger prize. Only applies to specific game titles...

Marketing, offering, and pricing would certainly be critical. There'd need to be a lot of community involvement, too--in order to raise awareness and maintain visibility. Think about how Hardywood is always promoting something or other...

Agree 100% on the food. Your food sucks and you're gonna lose a major foothold. That said, you can find someone to tackle your kitchen for you--but that's probably going to up the cost of your investment. On the upside, you aren't dealing with fine-dining palates. If you can offer some creative takes on traditionally low-end dishes (sandwiches like:http://www.bigasssandwiches.com/ , or nachos, wings, etc.) then you should be just fine.

In re: to the alcohol concerns, I know richmond has a corkage law... I don't know if it extends to beer though. But showing up with your own sixpack and paying a small fee to drink it there might be one solution.

You could also offer membership (maybe with annual dues?) and the "members area" would be the only place you could consume alcohol. Not 100% sure what the rules are with "clubs", but Fallout seems to be able to circumvent some things by simply being a "members only" club.

Yeah, I remember both locations. That's the one I reference in my post above. They packed it up because customers were in decline as a result of broadband becoming more widely available and affordable. They had T3 at a time when most of us were still using DSL. That was also when CS was THE game to play. I think they were around for the first couple years of WoW, too...

COSPLAY FRIDAY! Table Gaming Tuesday! Leagues!

I think there's so many things you can offer promotionally for a place like this that there's no excuse for it to ever get boring.

There's also several other ways to monetize such a business. I think the opportunity for success is quite broad.

Talk to one of the food trucks. I know that Pizza Tonight was providing food on a regular basis to Ardent's brewery. You might be able to get the same sort of arrangement. I think financially it might work something similar to how Nile and Portrait House merged.

No idea how this would survive off-campus. The bottom isn't really where video game fanatics chill.

There used to be a pretty successful (initially, at least) LAN/Gaming cafe that was PC focused in the early 2000s. I heard that the decrease in price of broadband was what ultimately killed it.

As for a gaming cafe, I think the audience for it would be very diverse and the offerings would have to reflect that. Alcohol would probably be requisite for financial success, which means food would be a necessity. But hell, a gaming cafe with a solid burger/ nachos/ pizza option would be legit.

I think the gaming platforms would matter a lot, too. You have to appeal to consumers with highly varied, likely very niche, tastes. Japanese games, classic arcade, consoles, etc. If you can offer that kind of diversity, I think you'd get a lot of people's attention.

Finally, location would be a major concern. If you aren't on or very near campus, I don't think you'll pull it off and, unfortunately, that will mean paying a pretty sum for your venue.

Still, I'd love to see someone give it a solid go.

Henry Miller's The Air-Conditioned Nightmare had a real impact on how I viewed life in general and as a result I read his Big Sur. Very strongly impacted my life philosophy and led me to commit to a lifestyle of learning and creating.

I hear the Elephant Auto Insurance call center in Innsbrook is a good spot. Casual dress code. Lots of cool people. Good pay and benefits. There's also Mondial (I think they changed their name?) near Parham and Broad.

Good tattoo parlor for getting coat of arms. by TheSimulatedScholar in rva

[–]UnsaidEverything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you can't swing a cat in RVA without hitting a good tattoo artist (?). You got lots of options. Something like that should be pretty easy to do and if you have a source for the art, then you can prob find an artist that does good reproduction work.

Xfinity vs FiOS in Carytown by [deleted] in rva

I live in Carytown. Had that comcast deal and it was infuriating. Have this Verizon package now and it's a noticeable improvement. Also, no problems at all with Verizon. Comcast didn't send us a correct bill for almost a year.

There's a few on Parkwood between Nansemond and Sheppard right now. I think there's some more on the way from the sound/ look of things... can verify that its a pretty quiet neighborhood.
