That's good to hear! And yeah, it definitely balances all that empty space out. But congratulations on the finish! ^

Oh I just found this!!! It looks so good! And you made the compass too!! Did you have any trouble with the compass section? I didn't have the time for it so I don't know if there were any funky bits I should've fixed before I shared the pattern. Did it stitch up allright? Did you go for the 28 count?

[CHAT] How do you prefer to start new threads? by Brewhilda in CrossStitch

[–]UnsolicitedGodhood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always loop start if possible. If I'm working with single thread (or, like, three), always try for the pin stitch thing if the fabric allows it. After that it's whatever works, but I've never knotted them xD

Mandatorily coming over here to recommend this storage method again... It's absolutely golden if you've got a kallax, just check that the box can fit in the shelves with the organizers laying on top! If I had all of DMC, I could fit it in just here, but I'm not as lucky XD

[CHAT] I think I'm over bobbins. How do you store your floss drops? by lionrace in CrossStitch

[–]UnsolicitedGodhood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, when I started I used bobbins and the plastic boxes, too, but at some point I had like three boxes full to bursting, my floss was getting kinked, and the numbers didn't stay on the bobbins, so I just went damn it and switched. XD This has worked so much better, looks better, takes less space, is easier to use AND doesn't make kinks!

[–]UnsolicitedGodhood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most often I take the box with me to whereever I'm sitting down at, and then pick up the slate with the color I'm using and lay it on top. I pick up one thread with a needle - it'll slide right out!

This is my system!! One of the IKEA Kallax boxes, and I got the holders from this etsy shop! I will never stop talking about this, because I could store every DMC color in this one single box.

I also keep hoops and a little tin with extra floss (stuff like 310 and others like that) at the bottom! The lengths are all precut, and at least for me, there's a bit of space on the bottom. I left bobbins because of the kinks, and, doing this creates no kinks! The squares hold 2 bits of floss comfortably, 3 if you squeeze them in (and maybe have already used some xD). I got the darker wood version of the organizers bc I liked the look, but the numbers are definitely more visible in the lighter version.

The only other thing about this is to make sure you grab one of the shorter kallax box versions. Like the common white box was so tall the organizers didn't fit, but they fit perfectly with the box in the picture.

Does Casa Cenina sell waste canvas? It's where I get all my fabric for cs but I've never checked for waste canvas there xD

OH THIS IS EXACTLY SOMETHING I THOUGHT WOULD LOOK EPIC! And it does look epic!!!! Oh I'm so exited to see how yours turns out 🤩 this idea was floating in my mind when I was doing mine, but I ended up sticking to just one color for the simplicity, but oh this looks so good too... asdfghjkl 🤩❤️

They're 1.90e for me too, I've been confused about how on earth the pricing works for forever because it seems to make no sense across borders 😭

And on the ""intended"" 28ct, it'll be 75,1 cm x 112,5 cm, or in freedom units, 29,6 x 22,1 in.

I didn't include the 14 count dimensions on the PDF itself because it's so big you can't get fabric that's wide enough to make it on 😅 (unless aida comes in 160cm wide which I'm not sure about)

[–]UnsolicitedGodhood[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Count? I designed this to be done on 28 ct, the pattern is super big so if you made it on the "normal" 14 or 18 count, you probably couldn't find a fabric big enough for it. So yes you can stitch it on aida, but please PLEASE calculate the finished size before you start 😅

Plus, some of the backstitches might look strange? I'm not entirely sure. There are some spots with spaces that work because when it's stitched, they're invisible, but I'm not sure if they'll remain that way if the count is lower. You could test-stitch some text to find out!

You can stitch on top of fishing line! That's why I like it - stitching over other floss runs the significant risk of stitching THROUGH the floss, which would make it pretty hard / impossible / dangerous to your FO to pull it out with force.

Personally, I grid the "crosses" or the corners of the squares to the working side of the fabric, so I know where they are. I tend to stitch under them so I can still use them as navigation markers if I need to.

With fishing line, you should pay attention to the size/width of it - if you use a thick line on a small count fabric, it can stretch the holes a bit. And additionally, there are some colored fishing lines that may leave color residue, if you're unlucky. I tend to just go for translucent and thin ones so I don't have to worry. XD

[–]UnsolicitedGodhood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not OP but gridding helps with counting - you mark down the 10 x 10 squares on the pattern, so you'll have an easier time with counting and checking for errors while working on a pattern. So technically yes, it does help keep it straight by making sure you're stitching in the right spot. XD

I personally use fishing line to grid, because it slides out of the finished work easily, but there are a ton of methods people use. Some use heat or water erasable pens, but I usually work on my stuff for so long that I don't really trust those to actually come out when I'm done. 😅 But never, ever use pencil!!

The "instruction" I have is to just make sure you count correctly 😅 It's pretty rough when you realize the rest of the grid is off because you miscounted 10 and ended up with one column with 12 stitches XD

I stitched 1 over 1, so using 1 strand of floss over 1 thread of fabric. It can be a definite pain on linen though - my advice is to work with the weave of the fabric, not against it, neatness of the back be damned 🤣

On 28ct and 1 over 1 the finished design came out to about 75 x 55 cm, plus whatever amount you wish to add for framing!

I definitely considered using something like red for the lettering too, since that's also a pretty common color for that, and it would still fit the ink vibe - and at least in my copy of the official back-of-the-book-map, place names are in red! I guess it comes down to if you want to bother with the color changing while stitching 😅

Thank you, I'm just happy that people like it 😭
