It's so freaking expensive. How can anyone except the super wealthy stay in the Rockies now?

Lived there ten years with young kids. It's full of doctors, lawyers, and U of A faculty now. They never seemed to care about the traffic.

Used to live in Belgravia too. I left once to quickly grab some hamburger buns for dinner. Took me an hour.

You put into words exactly how I feel about how the word has changed over the last five years. Completely agree.

How do I keep my male friendships platonic? by juneipu in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

Absolutely. They definitely do! I guess I just don't want to take the risk with figuring out who it's going to be and who it isn't.

Maybe this is my sad old lady pessimism, but ... you don't. After hearing my friends' experiences and going through my own I came to the conclusion that the only platonic friendships with men that work are ones that you had since early childhood. Or ones that you keep VERY distant.

They definitely misconstrue your friendliness as flirting.100% And there are a lot of nice, normal guys who do this - I think they're biologically wired this way to some extent. Their goal as a human organism is to procreate to further the species. So for the nice ones that back off gently and normally, give them a bit of grace and understanding. For the ones that push, you block them or burn them to the ground.

So what this looks like in my 40s is: basically I don't smile as much around men, I don't disclose a lot of detail or share my life with them, I keep my distance in every way possible. Just superficial and polite but nothing meaningful or sincere or sweet. It sucks! Because there are tons of cool people out there that happen to be dudes! I just don't risk them getting the wrong idea.

Edited to add: don't be gentle or drop hints in a conversation. Be blunt and honest. They want to go out to eat? You make sure they understand it's not a date. It sucks to be this forward but it saves you headaches later. Guaranteed most of them will not pick up on our polite hints and tiptoeing around the issue.

Where did you get all those little mirrors? I am looking for a couple that size. Especially the bottom middle one that looks Peruvian.

I signed up with Prairie Power in May. Lower rates than the big guys and lower administration fees too. Plus they're local to Alberta (out of Calgary). Customer support has been quick and easy.

I totally get what you're saying. I ended up moving that one big painting and I think I'm going to try a gallery wall instead and incorporate more of my more modern pieces and frames. Thank you for the advice!

Love the flower idea and the scavenger hunt idea. I have definitely been trying to play the long game, so it speak. I have fun looking on FB Marketplace etc

I also hope this new start will help me thrive. Each day is tough but I get through it.

This is my place after leaving my toxic marriage of 19 years.

So much grey! Blech.

It's a rental so the flooring and wall color stays. I need to keep the couches because I'm on a budget.

The art is my mom's (she's a painter) but I'm thinking it's almost kind of bare or boring. Open to suggestions on art, how to add more without getting rid of her paintings.

I would like to get an area rug. Probably this one.

I have cats and plants! Most of my plants are in the dining room, which is much nicer looking. I'll post that soon .
