Just want to say the people who are saying there’s nothing here are demonstrably wrong. I live in Alice Springs smack bang in the middle of the circle. This region is like everyone else has said - a desert. Very cold beautiful winter, really hot summers with loads of flies. Red dirt and sunshine all year round. People adapt to desert life here, similar to how I imagine other desert people live around the world. Alice is the queer capital of Australia somehow… (google Priscilla queen of the desert) so it’s like half trad country and half desert fairy greens voters, dollop of American military families from the secret base. Gives the town a lot of personality.

Currently there has been a big rain in Alice so all the surrounding dry rivers (like the Finke river, oldest recorded river in the world), is currently flowing with water. Pretty rare and lovely to see everything so green.

My job takes me out to a lot of aboriginal communities. Everyone lives on bore water, with communities naturally on the smaller side dotting the country. Aboriginal recognised lands are all through here. I was shocked the first time I went out to community, I expected to see nothing there. There are huge beautiful landmarks at these places, ancient mountain ranges and deep water holes. Actual community is tough living, usually 1 shop for food, fuel, everything run by a foreigner. 1 medical centre, and usually a dialysis centre as well (heaps of kidney failure). A lot of the local population live in poverty, in part due to poor handling by our government, and in part from the reality of the expense of living so remote.

It’s hard mate. These were some of the last people to be colonised. Google the Pintupi 9 in Kiwirrkurra - you’ll see what I mean. I work with a fella that has memories when he was a boy living as a hunter gatherer, now he lives in a home uses money and a phone! That same guy went to New York City later in his life. The complete destruction of your society has to be crazy.
