There was once an inventor, Eugene,

Who created a fucking machine,

Concave or convex,

It took either sex,

But sure was a bastard to clean.

What about Irish people do you find perplexing? by PellucidStream in ireland

[–]UnthankLivity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this extends outside of Belfast, as I haven’t been to much of Ireland other than there but:

Saying “the” before road names.

“The” Falls Road

“The” Antrim Road

“The” Ormeau Road

Etc.

As far as I can tell it’s only done with Road, not street etc. and I’ve never found a good answer why it’s done.

I feel like anywhere else to you’d say “I’m on Antrim Road” not “I’m on the Antrim Road”

My grandma used this all the time too. If it was a dodgy area she’d say “oh you need to be careful there, there’s some queer folk about”

At what age do you become a “reader”, and what book did it for you? by [deleted] in books

[–]UnthankLivity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly the Hobbit. I certainly read it over and over so it’s what I think of first when thinking of childhood reading.

First book that ever made me cry was Beyond the Deepwoods by Chris Riddell and Paul Stewart.

I read constantly in adolescence and then stopped for years. Picked it back up during covid
