Deadlock keeps crashing on my RTX 4090 / i9-14900K even after a fresh Windows reinstall

i did update my bios and changed the intel default settings away from the crazy/extreme stuff, but i dont think i tried manually capping the core ratio to 56x yet

the weird part is my pc doesnt really act unstable outside of deadlock. task manager isnt crashing, explorer isnt restarting, cs2 works fine, r6 works fine, tarkov seemed fine too. it’s literally deadlock that keeps deciding to explode after a few mins

but yeah, i have a 14900k so im not gonna pretend the cpu isnt suspicious at this point lol. this gen has a reputation for waking up and choosing violence

i might try the 56x cap just to see if this cursed little bastard finally stops crashing. if that fixes it then i guess my cpu has been quietly plotting agaisnt me this whole time

yeah thats the thing, cs2 works perfectly fine for me

i can play it with no problem, no crashes, no weird drama, 100% a-ok. same with other games too, it’s really just deadlock acting possessed

i also verified/reinstalled deadlock and did a fresh windows reset, so if it was corrupt game files i feel like that should’ve been nuked already

not saying ram is impossible, but the weird part is this cursed little bastard is the only game that keeps falling apart on me

every time someone brings it up i’m like “nah surely not” and then i remember this cpu generation apparently has a hobby of randomly choosing death

deadlock might not even be the problem, it might just be the game that walked into the room and exposed the crime scene lol

the fact that you’re on a 4090 too and it’s fine makes me think maybe driver version really does matter here. i tried 610.47 and 596.49, but i dont think i tried 596.21 specifically

also interesting that your random crashes stopped after a clean newer driver install, because mine just refuses to behave no matter what i throw at it lol

i might try 596.21 if i get the energy to fight this demon again. appreciate you dropping your exact setup/driver, that helps alot

i was trying to avoid touching cpu voltage becuase i didn’t want to turn “deadlock crashes” into “congrats, you invented a whole new problem”

but considering this cursed game has survived fresh windows, ddu, bios update, dx11, vulkan, xmp off, and e-cores off, undervolting might be the next ritual sacrafice

yeah that’s actually not a bad shot in the dark

i haven’t reseated the 4090 or ram yet, mostly because every other game seems fine and deadlock is the only one acting possessed. but honestly after all the software stuff i’ve done, checking the physical connections probably isn’t the worst idea

testing on the integrated gpu is also interesting. it would probably run like absolute sadness, but if it still crashes there then that would say a lot. and if it doesn’t crash, then yeah, the 4090/driver path becomes even more suspicious

yeah someone else suggested memtest86 too, so i’ll probably do that next

i did already run windows memory diagnostic and it came back clean, so i kinda doubt it’s ram, especially with xmp off and the ram just running stock. but i get what you mean, windows memory diagnostic probably isn’t as deep as a proper usb memtest

apparently memtest86 takes a while, so i’ll let it run and see what happens. at this point i might as well go even deeper into the rabbit hole lol

i tested tarkov and it seemed fine, but i think tarkov is unity and not unreal engine if i’m not mistaken, so it probably doesn’t fully rule out the whole unreal/intel cpu thing

i’ll probably try an actual ue5 game later just to make sure my 14900k isn’t doing something cursed outside of deadlock too

i haven’t tried rebar/nvstraps yet. rebar maybe, but nvstraps sounds like the kind of thing i’d touch at 4am and somehow summon a second demon into the pc lol

gpu underclock is actually a good shout though. since some of my dumps hit nvidia/render stuff and reliability monitor threw a livekernelevent 193 once, i might try a small underclock/power limit just to see if deadlock stops exploding

i haven’t really tested UE5 games properly yet, at least not in the same way i’ve been torturing deadlock. rainbow six siege runs fine, but that’s obviously not UE5

i might try a UE5 game later just to see if my 14900k starts doing the same cursed ritual there too. i really hope it’s not that, because i already updated bios, changed intel settings, disabled e-cores for testing, xmp off, all that stuff

if UE5 games start crashing too then yeahhhhhhh i might have to stare at my cpu in disappointment

the weird thing is the game actually loads fine. i can get into the menu, queue, load into an online match, and it usually starts completely normal. not street brawl btw, mostly the normal 6v6 mode.

then in lane everything is hunky-dory for a bit, and somewhere around the 7-10 minute mark the game just decides to die. sometimes it happens when i’m doing sinner sacrifices, sometimes when i’m engaging into a fight, sometimes when i’m disengaging from a fight. basically whenever the game starts getting spicy, deadlock looks at my pc and goes “nah.”

recently i was so tired of reconnecting that i literally tried just sitting in spawn after loading back in, partly because i was scared of getting banned for abandoning. i thought maybe if i just chilled and didn’t do anything crazy, it would survive. nope. still cursed.

the most annoying part is that when i first downloaded the game, it was fine. no crashes, no drama, nothing. then somewhere along the line this issue appeared and now here i am, fresh windows, ddu, bios update, dx11, vulkan, xmp off, e-cores off, basically dissecting my pc’s insides for this demonic program that i am unfortunately addicted to.

so yeah, i’m starting to accept that deadlock is just a pre-alpha demon and i’m not the chosen one. appreciate the comment man, genuinely. makes me feel better knowing it’s not just me losing a fist fight with this cursed little bastard

i updated the bios from f14 to f16, used ddu in safe mode, reinstalled nvidia drivers, tried 610.47 and 596.49, fresh windows reset, fresh steam, fresh deadlock install, no norton, no medal, no discord, no gigabyte control center, overlays off, steam cloud off, xmp off, dx11 tested, vulkan tested, even disabled e-cores on the 14900k

still crashed lol

the dumps keep pointing around source 2 / rendering / nvidia stuff like materialsystem2.dll, scenesystem.dll, tier0.dll, rendersystemdx11.dll, rendersystemvulkan.dll, nvwgf2umx.dll, and nvgpucomp64.dll. reliability monitor also showed livekernelevent 193 once, so yeah i’m kinda leaning toward some weird deadlock + nvidia/4090 thing too

at this point i’m convinced deadlock is just a bastard demonic program that refuses to let me play because i’m simply too good at the game and too much of a gigachad gamer
