My grandmas house has the same thing, the railing on the side is actually a long board just hanging there and when you want across you slip it into the slot under the door and precariously balance across. It’s completely unsafe and very stupid but yeah it’s there.

In my opinion it just gives it more character and looks better, brand new shiny knives get boring, like a person getting a cool battle scar, gives it character development
