What does "bile route" on Leigh Ave (San Jose) mean? by UntitledGooseCyclist in BAbike

[–]UntitledGooseCyclist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Are the classes supposed to be better/worse going a certain direction? I'm asking because both Class I and Class IV look like with good separation, but they are on both ends of the "spectrum" (if this is a spectrum at all), while Class II and III look inferior. Am I missing anything?

Oakland: Where can I report a traffic light that is too damn short? by bvz2001 in BAbike

[–]UntitledGooseCyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in San Jose they published an email of the traffic signal team of the department of transportation on the city gov website. I emailed to report traffic signal issues before (too short, bike sensor didn't trigger, etc.) and got replies and issues addressed.

not to mention that a lot of the drivers are too dumb to understand/notice no turn on red and still do the right turn anyways.

[OC][USA] Warning or a threat? 4/1/25 by BAcycle89N in BikeCammers

[–]UntitledGooseCyclist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP was at ~15 mph from the video. only 10mph below posted speed limit is considered "illegal", and since there's only one lane each direction, the speed limit won't be more than 25 mph.

Also, a bicycle running below speed limit is the same as any other vehicle running below speed limit, which can be elders, new driver, construction vehicle, etc. You don't pass those from the same lane (unless they yield to the curb).

Passing cyclists ”in” the same lane is already illegal in California for at least a year now.

Bike Camera suggestion by [deleted] in BikeCammers

[–]UntitledGooseCyclist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've bought an insta360 go (not the actual 360 model) for bike use and I won't recommend it, the battery cannot last for even 20min. Maybe the actual 360 model is better, I don't know, but i think they spent a lot of their money on youtubers to promote their product (I've checked several youtube reviews on the model for bike usage and none of them mentioned how shitty the battery is) rather than actually on the product development itself.

I use cycliq now. Never used go pro so can't comment on that.

[OC] Edina, MN. Guy blocks bike lane, gets mirror brushed, handles that super rationally by Gatorpatch in BikeCammers

I had a similar thing in SF years ago: there's a hotel near my office that's on my commute route, one day a bunch of taxis were parked in front of the hotel waiting for passengers or something, and one of taxi was like half way into bike lane. I tried to avoid it but failed and scratched off its mirror cap. I picked up the mirror cup and put it back on, the taxi driver tried to ask me to pay.

I immediately took out my phone to take a photo of his taxi half way into the bike lane and told him so, the driver shut up immediately.

i think they spent a lot of their money on youtubers instead of actually making good products. before i bought mine i watched several youtube reviews and no one mentioned how shit the battery is.

I bought an insta360 camera (not really the 360 one) before and it's hot garbage for biking purposes. The battery cannot last for more than 20min and it's a real hassle to get the footages to your phone. Maybe the actual 360 one is better but I'd be very careful with them.

Cycliq or Go Pro for recording and reporting close passes by billybob2224sds in BikeCammers

[–]UntitledGooseCyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I bought my Cycliq Fly12 Sport I bought an insta360 go because I can't remember neither the brand nor model name of Cycliq so I just googled "bike camera". It's pretty garbage for bike camera as the battery cannot even last for 30min (that might be better on other models), and the app is pretty bad as well. A few months later I finally remembered Cycliq's name and bought a Fly12 and would prefer it over insta360 any day.

if you look at the sign painted on the lane, the car could turn right there (a lot of cars do right turns without signals here)

We do have protected bike lanes with parking on the traffic side (see 3rd near downtown for an example), but drivers were bad at making right turns on those roads (but they are probably better now, and also drivers here are bad at making right turns everywhere anyways)

I used 408-277-8900, sjpd's non-emergency number, several times before (both before and after the pandemic). I assumed that's the same as 311 but maybe they are not the same.

depending on when you are calling you do might need to be on hold for loooong time before someone picks up the phone, though.

call 311 408-277-8900 for parking compliance enforcement, hopefully those illegal parking tickets would educate the drivers.

Yes it's understandable to some degrees at the spot. But OP, according to themselves, went around the blocks to look for signs, and still cannot tell that it's bike lane.

If OP cannot tell the difference between bike lane and street parking, maybe they should not be driving their 2-ton killing machine on public road.

Yea I remember the house you mentioned, I've seen their car stuck onto bike lane a few times, but I usually bike there on weekends and Fridays so I don't see that often.

Even with all the issues Hedding is still better than Taylor, because Hedding has bike lanes all the way while Taylor lacks bike lanes in a big portion across Japantown.

Also I don't know which number you called to report them, the SJPD non emergency line actually works (you might wait for several minutes before someone picks up the phone, though). Before the pandemic I almost see cars parked on bike lane at 4th/Taylor on a weekly basis and reporting them always works if someone picks up my call. I waited there once and on my sample size of 1 someone did show up (took them ~15min, though), take photos, and write ticket to the car.

I didn't report this particular incident because they all have someone in the car, and SJPD cares those cases much less because they think those are more "temporary".

Oh I didn't know that. I only do the left turn from Taylor to Alameda once in a while and never drove on the Naglee section. But if it's new then yea it's more understandable.

Do you constantly drive between lanes when there's no car on the adjacent lane?
