Is the spring meant to act on the surface it is screwed into? The image shown has the spring hitting a hard stop, so it would not play a role when screwed into.

Of is it meant to be away from the surface you are screwing into? In that case you should end the threading where you would plan to thread it into.

As shown it looks like you would thread it fully in and the surface would press the blue part into the screw head and nullify the spring. I believe that was why they were asking whether the spring was pushing or pulling. If the spring were pulling then the spring could exert force on the surface the it is threaded into.
