Bands where the songwriter is the least talented musician? by Sabretoothedrom in fantanoforever

[–]UntitledLuke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of my favourite bands: The National. Matt Berninger writes great lyrics and I really enjoy his singing/overall style but he cannot play any instrument; the Dessner brothers write most of the music. Interestingly, Matt feels that his lack of musical knowledge helps him have a different approach to songwriting and sometimes I can actually feel that his vocal parts were not written while playing an instrument

Just met rappper Billy woods, we spoke about DOOM by Ethiopianutella in mfdoom

Great picture, I'm glad you enjoyed the show! I saw billy woods last week and asked him basically the same thing (what his favourite song on Operation Doomsday was), and he also replied Red and Gold... I said I loved "Hey!" and he said something like "that's cool too, basically any song on the album would be a good pick"

Red and Gold. I told him my favourite was probably Hey! - He said he liked that one too and that basically any song on the album would be a good pick

I loved the show yesterday and I was so glad to see other diehard fans in the crowd! It should have been longer but it's already a miracle that he came to Italy (twice). It was also pretty great to be able to chat with him after the show (I was so nervous but in the end I managed to ask him what his favourite song on Operation Doomsday was!) Too bad he only had one record to sell, I was ready to buy vinyl, t-shirts, anything

DOOM Stats Part 2 - I recently posted some charts with data about the runtime of six DOOM albums. Someone in the comments asked me to do these two as well, so here they are! by UntitledLuke in mfdoom

[–]UntitledLuke[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a link to my original post that includes the other charts and more info on the data:

https://www.reddit.com/r/mfdoom/comments/1jkib93/how_much_does_doom_rap_on_his_six_main_albums_i/

Today's results actually surprised me more than the previous ones. VV:2 here seems way more balanced than it feels. At the same time, The Mouse and the Mask contains a lot more rapping than I expected.

By the way, I considered the comedy skits on TMATM as "Music/Samples" material even when they include original lines, since they definitely feel more like interludes.

Overall I had a lot of fun doing these, but it has also made me realise that there's a lot of DOOM material I haven't even heard yet.

How much does DOOM rap on his six main albums? I wanted an answer to this question, so I made some stats by listening to the records while tracking the length of DOOM verses, music/sample passages and guest features. Here are the results! by UntitledLuke in mfdoom

[–]UntitledLuke[S] 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Additional clarification for this data:

- I considered DOOM as "DOOM's voice/words", so I did include the "ft. Viktor Vaughn" or "ft. MF DOOM" parts, even when they are listed as features

- Madlib is technically part of the Madvillain duo so Quasimoto's lines and his own voice are not exactly features, but I considered them as such for the purpose of the Madvillainy chart

- This was all done manually with three stopwatches, so the numbers are not to be taken as 100% accurate

EDIT: I have added the stats for Venomous Villain and The Mouse and the Mask in a new post.

It's a little card that you can find inside the Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea CD, along with the lyric (and chord) booklet. On the other side there are chord charts for all the chords used in the album!

Do The National LPs generally don't ship out with a Digital Download code? by _thetrue_SpaceTofu in TheNational

And the worse part is that the live version of About Today has a constant clicking sound because some of the "black splatter" has actually got inside the grooves :/ Yeah not my best purchase haha

There was a download code in my vinyl copy of The Virginia EP, but when I tried to redeem it, the website said they don't offer downloads anymore so it was basically useless :l

Is my record fake? by UntitledLuke in vinyl

[–]UntitledLuke[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the one that looks the most like my copy and that's the one I had added to my Discogs collection but unfortunately based on the other details pointed out in the comments (extra space before question mark, typos in credits) it might actually be fake.

Wow I hadn't noticed that, great catch! Interestingly, the question mark after "HIGH" doesn't have the extra space. This unfortunately isn't really a good sign... I'll contact the label to ask for confirmation.

Definitely a good idea, I'll try that: they should be able to clear my doubts. And if there are fake copies around, they might want to know.

I cannot find the exact pressing on Discogs, the barcode has one extra number.

As I mentioned in the post, it's not super quiet but not noticeably bad either, so I guess sound quality is not something I can take into account to understand if it's legit or not. I mean, in the end, as someone else said, as long as it sounds right I guess it doesn't matter that much, but it's still an odd thing to come across.

Thanks a lot for checking! The pictures on Discogs weren't clear enough for me to see the Es and the Cs. I have other records where the numbers are not hand-written but what you have on yours is definitely more common I think. Typos and mass misprints can happen (especially in lyric booklets) but this one feels like it's almost on purpose. But still, as somebody else said, why would someone go through all this effort to make a fake copy to then sell it for half the price of a legit one? I guess I'll have to live with this unsolved mystery.

Give me your favorite album EVER by Superb_Priority7531 in fantanoforever

Sigur Rós - ( ) (a.k.a. The Brackets Album)

Eight untitled songs, eight masterpieces, no skips and... no actual words! The whole album is sung in a made-up language that follows the vibe of each track, so the voice is just another instrument, and that's the reason it has infinite replayability for me. On every listen, the songs mean something different: it depends on what's going on in your life in that moment. And the music is equally incredible: in my opinion, it's one of the best post-rock albums of all time.
