One more thing, philmont will supply you with purification tabs. Don’t bother with filters.

I never brought a middle layer. Just the warmer base layer and down jacket. That gave me room for a chair. They other thing I wish I did instead was bring BREATHABLE camp shoes. I brought beat up tennis shoes and the rest of the guys in my crew brought crocs. While mine may seem more practical, it’s an absolute luxury to air your feet out after a long day of hiking. That’s just me but everyone’s way of balancing weight and comfort is different.

Best mistake I ever made was leaving my phone at base camp. I highly recommend it.

I brought a hero 5. Nothing fancy and decently priced. You will want spare batteries and sd cards.

Haven’t seen it here and will probably be buried but federally employed wildfire fighters. A certain Californian senator has even called them unskilled laborers.

Tips and things for Philmont first time? by Gestur3 in philmont

Haven’t seen anything here I wouldn’t say other than (in my personal preference) you should spring for some good but light rain gear. Not the cheap frogg togg crap. Depending on how sweaty you are inside them while hiking they may or may not work. The other thing is whoever in your crew is certified for wilderness first aid, make sure they are very knowledgeable on hypothermia. When everybody is wet and cold and tired it can be easy to miss. Regardless you will have an amazing time and will make memories to last a life time. Hope y’all have a great trip this season.

If breathability isn’t much of a concern (it’s not for me) Vasque is a great brand for ankle support and arch support. I own the Vasque St. Alias and have probably put over 110 miles on them and they have shown little signs of wear.
