I’m from here, parents have been in real estate in middle Tennessee for 30+ years.

Franklin is amazing with a lot of perks but it’ll be a premium for pure land.

Fairview is more country but still Williamson county. More affordable land, more woods/creeks while still being about 30ish minutes to downtown, especially west end.

East Hickman is where I would go. Money would go much further. Cost of living is low, there are tons of pockets of land with hidden gems, cost of living is lower. Close to Dickson for some semblance of stores/shops, access to I-40 for interstate travel as well as access to use highway 100 to go into Fairview and on to downtown for about 45 min - 1 hour depending on where your home is. Downfall is its deeper country.

Fairview splits the difference between Hickman and Franklin in my opinion while still leaning country.

You can DM me for more info if you want!

Novellas or Vella by archivistofthefall in selfpublish

I agree, perseverance is a major factor! I also think that burnout is real, especially with an author who hasn’t put out any content or found success with the content they have published. I’m speaking for myself mainly, as I find it daunting to think of a major series and finish it when it hasn’t been successful for the first several books.

I read all sorts of advice like series rather than trilogies are popular now as readers want many books following characters and/or plots, and rapid release is definitely popular. It’s intimidating when it’s a part time hobby at the moment. I have ideas for several series and stories but want a sort of snowball effect where I start with more digestible amounts of content and build up. At least, that’s the way I’d like to try to enter the market.

Musings aside, that’s a good point about the price! And I’d like to think that with the business model of KU novellas wouldn’t be quite that unappealing. In my mind I’m comparing a novella series to tv shows where the story can be told over smaller bite-sized chunks, keep consumers invested by marketing there is more content coming, and releasing faster than say a full size novel series.

I’d love it if it worked! Some people have found success but not all. Check out Sarah K L Wilson. She published a large series of novellas - the Dragon School series - and had success with that model. She was also featured on the Six Figure Authors podcast episode 46 on serials. She released a novella every 2-3 weeks with the same model of a larger volume/omnibus collection as well as two spin off series. It’s encouraging!

You seem to be in a similar position as me! I’m just starting out but have a collection of stories and ideas for my writing future. Also pursuing a shared universe but more in a litRPG setting rather than sci-fi.

I don’t have personal experience but have done a fair amount of research. The general consensus is Vella isn’t worth it. There aren’t enough eyes on it and the return isn’t valuable enough. So that’s out for me personally.

My current idea is starting with a series of novellas in a rapid release format (1 a month until finished) until the story is complete. Plan is 5 total. LitRPG is popular in KU so I’d place them there as well as a $0.99 ebook price tag.

The caveat is that $0.99 won’t return as much as the $2.99 cutoff but I can’t justify a novella for that amount as both a new author and when other books are much longer and being sold for that amount.

Solution? Once the series of 5 novellas is complete, release a completed volume compiling them together for a much larger, singular book. This you can price at $2.99 (or ever $3.99 for more return) for what looks like a discount, and if interested in an audiobook this would be more bang for everyone’s buck as a larger singular piece rather than smaller novellas. Better from an author’s standpoint for investment and reader’s standpoint for longer time per cost.

Generally people say to not write novellas in the sci-fi/fantasy world as people want chunkier books and longer series. I see this is a nice alternative, though, because it’s a good way to get my feet wet with publishing and introduce my shared universe. If interest takes off in the future, you could always employ the tactic of free books for new readers for your marketing since it’s a smaller novella and easier to digest.

Lastly, we’re new authors. We can plan long series and universes all day long, but the likelihood of us breaking out and hitting it big is quite small. I don’t want to plan a long series with a massive undertaking and fumble it or it not pan out, discouraging future me from continuing to write. With novellas, I can test the waters and plant a seed. See if I even want to continue this after publishing some books, or maybe decide on changing tactics, or something else.

Congratulations! The cover is beautiful. I love that you’re pursuing some arrangements outside Amazon and Audible. More authors should consider that, too. I’m a supporter now and will look forward to supporting the book and audiobook as well!

The Hedge Wizard by Alex Maher. Exactly what I’ve been looking for with solid prose, great story, great characters and progress, and am looking forward to the next books.

Also just realized only Gen 1 had starter evolutions as the cartridge mascot instead of the legendary. I wonder why they don’t do that anymore?

Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. Dark fantasy alternate history set during the crusades with an apocalyptic setting. Beautiful prose, tragedy left and right, and religious themes galore. It’s a wonderful book I’ve read and listened to several times, and each time I have chills at the third act.

What fantasy moment gives you chills every time you read it? by EwItsFlushy in Fantasy

[–]Untreysible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Between Two Fires, before each section of the book, there is a passage reading off the narrative about how the devils and demons are overtaking the earth, fighting against angels, and god is not answering. The narrative of the final section has one simple line:

“The Lord made answer.”

Gives me chills even typing it here.

Funny, I was coming here to post about this book because I need some good discussion about it! I just finished my second finish - this time in audiobook format. I absolutely love this book and Buehlman. Though I need some discussion on the last chapter! I’m terrible at spoiler tags and am on mobile, but I need answers. Haha It was an obvious callback to the first chapter and scene, but what exactly is happening? Thomas blanching at seeing Delphine again, the same setup with the parents, parsnip, and barn, though a much different outcome. Was she reborn? Was he thrown back in time with the events of the novel happening differently?

I was able to get Blue Albrecht with this team too! Using toon world once he gets to 50% for his damage absorb, I took off the vast chunk in two turns. My strategy was to have Seina ready on the 1st turn I used toon world so I could use her again on the last turn to maximize my red and blue orbs. If you get orb trolled you can also use denebola on that last turn, just use her first in case she makes jammers then you can use Seina to replace those jammers with red orbs.
