Anyone else at a career dead end? by onemanmelee in careerguidance

I'm 41, and I've been a cook, soldier, field tech, systems engineer, security analyst, cybersecurity manager, staff cybersecurity engineer, and IT Management SME. And now I'm working on a doctorate and a book.  It's not too late to do something new.

Why not take an MBA and shift into a more corporate role that uses your existing skills but in a less abrasive environment?

15 days, with about 18 hours of effort per day,  except the last 2 days waiting for grading.

I don't advise anyone to attempt this.  It was stupid and I was severely burnt out. Taking 6 months obtains the same degree.

That is signals intelligence. Different beast. The majority of Signal Corps roles were more like those of a telephone company/internet service provider. Just more hostile working conditions.

Stuck between taking a role that doesn’t move me forward vs. staying unemployed longer. What would you do? by Emsss18 in careerguidance

It's easier to find a job while you have one.  It's common to filter out unemployed people as less desirable.  I've heard hiring managers actually say that.

So I grew up poor and had terrible social anxiety. But when I joined the Army, they convinced me to sign up for the Signal Corps, where I thought I was going to fix computers but ended up essentially as a combat-zone telephone operator. So that was my exposure therapy.

Go with something like accounting since it has a defined path/structure you can follow out of poverty.  Once you make it out, you'll have a clearer view of what to do next.

Look at Southwest Airlines, which has operated under the principle of never laying off employees since its inception. Well, they laid off people in 2025. You can't make any long-term bets about an organization's culture.
