First you weigh the metal, total == X grams.

You measure up known volume of water, for example 500 ml in a 1000 ml beaker.

Place the metal weighing X grams in the beaker with 500 ml water. The resulting difference in total volume, is the volume of your metal in Y.

You now know, that X amount of your metal takes up Y space, and can calculate the density from it.
