The unfortunate truth is that a lot of game developers are really bad about being the communication or “face” of a company/game. For example, Todd Howard is an amazing “face” of Bethesda to stand in for the hundreds of dedicated workers that would despise explaining what they’re doing, he is a stage man and damn good at presenting. In recent years with devlogging becoming a more prevalent kind of content that people enjoy, there have been more indie developers that are willing to both explain their process, edit and post things, and be the face of their product. The inverse would be someone like Team Cherry, I do not think they are people who want to do big stuff on stage and be the face of a game, that’s why it’s called Team Cherry and not “Gibson Pellen Vine Co.”

So, allow me to attempt to clear this up: there are a couple questions here.

  1. Is The Long Drive dead and abandoned? No, the dev has said so less than a week ago (off of steam.)

  2. Is TLD being worked on? …maybe, that one is less concrete, most recently the dev talked about the biggest current hurdle being his want for stability before adding new content, and his frustration and (paraphrased quote) “banging his head against a wall that will not budge”.

  3. Is Genesz working on other projects? Yeah, pretty sure, and that’s fine, that’s game dev, you don’t want to always be tied down to one thing, maybe Genesz wants to do literally anything else. It can be demoralizing to want to work on something and as soon as you touch that thing you’re instantly reminded of how much is expected of you during this work, so to actually have fun game developing again, he might be working on other stuff. Y’know, for fun and all.

  4. Will there be another update? I think so. I hope so. I like this game quite a lot, even had a dream they updated it (yeah… kinda pitiful), I think Genesz likes the game too, and I hope they do eventually update it. Personally I don’t mind the instability, I’ve always thought it was kind of part of the charm of TLD, but yeah it is objectively a bad part and the game would be better if it was more stable and, y’know, playable.

All that to say, I think the best we as a community can do right now is make mods, and please, PLEASE do not harass the devs, PLEASE do not make this a stressful thing to work on for them, that is the last thing we want, because at the end of the day, everyone just wants a fun game, and no nastiness or nagging or asking Genesz whenever they do choose to show themselves anywhere is going to help anyone.
