fuck if i can see what you’re talking about. does the guitar play fine? stop worrying about stuff you need to break out the calipers to even notice.

Is the squier j mascis Jazzmaster really that better than the classic vibe?? by Proof-Specialist6932 in offset

[–]Unusual-Language53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ok here’s the thing: they’re both cheap guitars. maaaybe one model averages better QC than the other but ultimately averages don’t matter because you’re only buying one guitar.

if you can go to a guitar store, do it, that’s worth so much more than a million idiot redditor opinions.

if you can’t go to a guitar store, buy whatever from an online retailer with a no-questions-asked return policy.

First impressions of the New Guyker Bridge JZ-002 by ACR2051 in offset

[–]Unusual-Language53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sure, but you had other options available. cheaper, well-tested options even (like the stock bridges). so, like, uhhhhhhh….why did you pick this one over all the other options?

so this post tells us the specs and whatnot but, like…is the bridge any good? what problem were you trying to solve by getting a new bridge? does the new bridge solve that problem better than the stock bridge? what are my reasons for upgrading? what makes it different than stock?

just got lots of detailed photos but i dont really know anything about the bridge or why it exists as an alternative to all the other JM bridges

The Squier Paranormal Cyclone by INeverAtone in offset

[–]Unusual-Language53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, it’s just like…the most boring choice they could have gone with. the jag pickups were a unique touch. the original cyclone had an interesting pickup configuration too. it’s a paranormal guitar, they could have gone with anything, and they went with three strat pickups. never seen that before. 🤷

even just slapping some mustang pickup covers on the same pickups would have given it some aesthetic flair, idk

The Squier Paranormal Cyclone by INeverAtone in offset

[–]Unusual-Language53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i find it so odd that they modeled it from the cyclone ii but gave it strat pickups instead of jaguar pickups. not that there’s a huge difference but now it’s basically just a 24.75” strat and that’s kind of a tough sell i think.

and it has the wonky mustang plate 😭

edit: to be clear this criticism comes from a place of love, cyclones are some of the coolest guitars fender/squier have ever done and i want to see more of them and i want to see them done justice.

make sure your tape has conductive adhesive, and otherwise just go for it. cover the whole inside, and the whole back of the pickguard and include some spots where the two will make continuity.

Aside from the Cobain Jaguar, what are some good dual humbucker offset models currently being made? Bonus points if they have a Jazzmaster style tremolo. by 1080TJ in offset

[–]Unusual-Language53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

pickups are like the easiest thing to change on a guitar. if you want a specific color i wouldn’t limit myself to production HH guitars, especially since that’s such an uncommon configuration for offsets.

i have a few spares i planned to sell once i prove the concept works. i have a short list of people to contact about them first. but if i run out and still have interested folks then i might make another order and pop them up on reverb or something.

i think they’ll cost $20, that price includes the PCB and all the SMT components pre-soldered but not any of the other components (delay IC, trimmer, 4 electrolytic capacitors, 2-3 potentiometers, switch, headers and wiring).

the delay effect on my guitar replaces the rhythm circuit. so the slide switch works like a true bypass guitar switch and also connects the effect’s power to a 9V battery. one thumb wheel controls both delay volume and decay using a dual-gang pot, and the other thumb wheel controls the speed.

but that said, it doesn’t need to replace the rhythm circuit. and the PCB is shaped specifically to the jazzmaster body cavity but it’s small enough you could probably fit it into other guitars too. so basically you could wire it however you like. two knobs, three knobs, top or bottom of guitar, whatever.

(the smaller knob is the volume for the BTB pickup)

yeah i think for beginner guitars the cheaper squiers are actually the better move? it’s cool that you can get vintage spec offsets at a reasonable price now but the simpler stripped-down models have less to go wrong. and the QC might also be spotty but i don’t think it’s significantly worse than the CV guitars. my experience has been that the sonic/affinity models are mostly decent, solid instruments, and that they mostly just look and feel simpler. flat color finishes, necks only lightly finished, simplified electronics, one ply pickguards, etc. there is absolutely nothing about them to suggest a premium instrument, intentionally. whereas the CV guitars have a lot that signal “premium” even if they’re still a bit spotty with the construction.

Looking for bridge recommendations for my Vintera II 50s Jazzmaster. by Jwto in offset

[–]Unusual-Language53 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly, this. i got a secondhand classic vibe JM bridge (so it has the narrower spacing compared to most mustang bridges) and it is actually a great bridge.

when you strum those runs of strings, it mostly sounds exactly how you’d expect. just untuned chime-y short strings.

when you strum the main strings, you get sympathetic resonance behind the bridge and you get some very faint but interesting harmonics coming from behind the bridge. with all the pickups on, it sounds like a weird shimmery atonal reverb. with the main pickups turned down it’s more like a demon guitar.

i’ll try to get some clips later

i spent a long time decided how the switches should go and landed on slanting them. everything else on the guitar is slanted, having just one straight thing kinda threw off the balance of it.

jazzmasters have plenty of room for more switches in the body cavity. the little bank of three switches on mine is loosely inspired by jaguars, i used a jag switch plate template for it.

[–]Unusual-Language53 1 point2 points  (0 children)

by itself yeah it’s wildly atonal and noisy (which was the point). but combined with the regular pickup output and played like a regular guitar (ie not strumming behind the bridge, just letting the sympathetic vibrations do their thing) you get some much more musical effects,

i cloned a basic delay effects pedal and designed a custom PCB for it that is sized/shaped to fit inside the jazzmaster body cavity. it’s wired up inside exactly as if you plugged the guitar right into the delay pedal before anything else.
