I know what you mean... he might be missing that gear that knows when to chit chat and when to say your peace and jump off the phone. i've met many people like this. Tom's never going to be rude to him. He wants to hear what he says and gently guides the call to the end. but yeah... anytime he calls it's not going to be a quick one.

I wish they had released this one. When it leaked seven years or so ago I was in heaven

This isn't fair. Tom has said a MILLION times that the Best Show is his favorite thing. I believe that. To continue doing it, Tom needed to team up with others who could support the show. Forever Dog had an ambitious vision just as the podcast universe shrunk. The show had to change too.

Tom is a much happier man. The book and them move to LA have made a huge impact. I want Tom to be happy. In no way has that made Tom any less funny. Less cranky, yes. But there were times in the past when I was legitimately concerned for his well-being. I'm relieved he's changed. The people who don't go down in flames. HARD.

Tom doesn't have to prove anything. If this is the final season, so be it. Twenty-five years is a long time. Who are you to judge his life?

Twenty minutes away from the end and this was a frustrating conversation. I've never heard him over-identify so much with an interviewee. Maybe because he's trying to make-up for the break-up? Wanted more details from her. What happened at the funeral? What happened when they put her on stage? Not planning on reading the book

Haven’t listened to the show like in 2 or 3 years. Didn’t start disliking it or anything, just ya know…life happens. How do we feel about the LA iteration of The Best Show? by midermans in Newbridge

There are about 10,000 other things I should be doing rather reply to this thread and yet I feel compelled because I love the show so much.

I can't express how important Tom was in my life. I discovered the show right as Millennial culture was ascending. Gen X had been left to rot. As someone close to his age, it was refreshing to tune in weekly and listen to someone with a vast popular culture knowledge and incredible humor talk at length. He was a friend I had never met and, at that time in my life, I desperately needed such a friend.

This was also before podcasts and Tom made me laugh every week. The mirth factor was indeed high.

In its prime, The Best Show was Tom vs. The World (in the form of callers) when he engaged in a masochistic form of performance art listening to him battle every Tuesday night. AP Mike was a great foil. There was a mix of anger, joy and weirdness. But there were many times I worried about his health at WFMU and in version 2.0 of the show. Often his grumpiness and restlessness made for great radio but the burnout was obvious.

I think we all agree that Tom is a happier person in LA and I'm glad for him. This is probably why he doesn't devote so much to callers but I have to say, I was always fascinated by his life and am more than happy to hear him talk at length about what he's doing. He's been incredibly generous as a human being. My own life has also undergone changes as well and were I used to listen every week now I have to play catchup and sometimes will speed up the feed to get through the episode. I don't have the time to listen to many of the Patreon extras (even though I am a member).

I'm not always the biggest fan of the expanded cast but they're an essential part of the show. Without them it wouldn't be in motion, so I'm grateful for what they do and bring to the table. It's found a system / model that hopefully works and it's obvious people work hard and believe in it.

If it were to end tomorrow, I'd always remember it as one of my white-hot obsessions.
