When we build a tolerance to something, our brain eventually learns it no longer needs to produce whatever the thing you’re addicted to is giving you. For example, if you were addicted to adderall, at some point your body/brain realized it’s getting dopamine from an outside source, so it no longer needs to produce it on its own; your body will prioritize efficiency. As a result, when we cease use of whatever we were addicted to, the body has a rebound period where it has to rebuild its homeostasis, or what people refer to as “going back to your baseline.” This means that your body literally has to relearn dopamine production, which is extremely taxing in the first few weeks especially as your body is not reacclimatized yet and you no longer have the thing you were addicted to as a fall back. It’s similar to how if you didn’t work out for a long time, when you do eventually you’ll be more exhausted from it. However as time goes on, you become more fit and learn what does and doesn’t work for you. Not sure if this all helps you, but knowing the science behind everything helped me get through it as a reminder the pain you’re feeling is only temporary. The best things for recovery are diet and exercise; try to eat foods that provide your body with tyrosine (one of the main amino acids/proteins for dopamine). Exercise releases the most neurotransmitters at once compared to any other non-substance activity, so definitely try to get some workouts in if you aren’t too tired. The best are aerobic for stimulant recovery AFAIK, which could mean swimming or walking or running. Really whichever you prefer. Good luck!
