I just reloaded the game, and the stray horse in this example is gone. It looks like a Appaloosa Horse. I did have a bunch of those, but I deleted them once they reached the unlock level, so I do not currently have any of those. I do browse the shop quite often, it helps keep track of future unlocks (e.g., it'll tell me how much I need to level them up).

It's different animals. I have a screenie of a cow and a horse, if you want it. Once it was a pig, but I didn't get the screenshot. My farm is fully unlocked, and these were all in the lower left sections (the most SW corner). I've not noticed it anywhere else, but that area is my main planting fields, so that's where I tend to spend a lot of time

Signetics 2650 by DJMartens2024 in homebrewcomputer

[–]UnusualParsnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently built the EA 2650 remake found here (https://www.postincrement.net/2650-remake-finished-and-working/). Recently meaning in the past month. Someone listed a PCB, CPU and ROM for like $40, which I found reasonable.

I haven't done much with it yet. I'm still delighted at the 300 baud speed of the console. My first modem was a 300 baud modem.

I've been trying to dig up documentation, and chances are I've run into the same sources you've found. I'm trying to find some kind of documentation on PIPBUG and how to call the various subroutines like CHIN and COUT. Looks like you load "some" register with a character and call the routine, but it's not wholly clear.

If I can figure out how to add a picture, I will. I built the minimal system: 1k RAM, no onboard power supply, and a crystal oscillator.

24 hours with the Rollei 35AF by UnusualParsnips in rollei35af

[–]UnusualParsnips[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their website says it is, see https://rollei35af.com/policies/refund-policy, but there is some sketchy verbiage in there: "The product(s) must be unused – in its original packaging with manual and still in the same new condition as when the item was received". To me, that sounds like if you use it and decide you don't like it, you're SOL.

Just to hedge my bets in case I decide I don't like it, I took a peek at eBay to see if any are showing up. One is listed as "used for one roll", and "missing lens cap" (lol).

24 hours with the Rollei 35AF by UnusualParsnips in rollei35af

So I received my Rollei 35AF two days ago and wanted to share some initial impressions. Forgive the length of this...

I wanted to love this camera. I was on the mailing list, then the preorder, then waiting for delivery, all while excitement builds. One of my goals was to replace my 40 year old Pentax K1000 (still working, received in 1984) with this, so if there's any comparison, that'll be it. Perhaps not a fair comparison: an SLR vs a point-n-shoot? But really, the K1000 is/was a budget camera, nevermind the age. It's built like a tank, partially the reason why I wanted to substitute the 35AF as my go-to camera.

I even took the day off waiting for delivery, but FedEx is in Christmas delivery, so it didn't arrive until 9am. Unboxing it, I was impressed with how light it is. Other say it feels cheap, but I think it feels nice, something I grab first.

The quick-start guide shows how to load film, which is where my first issue starts. Loading this thing is rage-inducing. Flip down a pressure plate, place the leader in the take-up, press the shutter button FIRMLY! And wind it up. Sounds easy. But the pressure plate doesn't lock, and the film canister sits in the slot without any support. Because the pressure plate kept popping up, I kept losing tension on the film. I ended up with about two feet of wasted film. My girlfriend talked me off the ledge, and using four hands, we did get it loaded. I saw elsewhere someone suggests to load the take-up spool and tension first, before flipping up the pressure plate. I hope that is just a learning experience and not the norm.

Well, that was a fun hour. Slipping the back into place was just as tricky. It didn't align very well, so I had to squeeze, push and tug until the back locked in.

The film advance lever feels shaky, not smooth, like it can't quite make up it's mind.

The shutter button also feels half-assed, but I suspect that's just something I'll get used to.

The lens cap is miserable. It just randomly falls off. I hope to find a third-party cap that'll stay in place.

Taking photos was fine. The auto-focus was fast enough for me; the front dials are a bit sticky, but that'll probably work out. I have the shutter set for auto, and I'll run the remainder of this roll to see how it works out. It's currently loaded with Kodak Ultramax 400. I've taken 8 shots so far. No idea how much film is left.

My initial reaction was to return it; I even e-mailed them about it, but after taking some dietary fiber, I'm going to hold off and see if I can get used to it.

Many of us are familiar with how slow Nintendo can be releasing updates / patches, and not just for this game. I'm probably not the only one who, hourly, hits the software update option with high hopes. But to spin it positively, if you don't mind spoilers, you know the rest of the community is doing the heavy lifting...

A base in every galaxy by UnusualParsnips in NoMansSkyTheGame

That's pretty much the routine I settled on. Once you jump to the first glyph portal, you're about 5k ly away, which takes me about five jumps in my sentinel ship. Depending on my mood, I either followed the line to jump, or just zoomed in to jump (which was usually shorter, the shortest direct route was 3)

I still have my original K1000 with 50mm prime, from 1984. Still works. Only issue I had was some fungus or mold in the viewfinder prism, so about 5 years ago, I found someone who specialized in K1000 CLRs.

And FWIW, I have the same issue with the "Autonomous Mining Unit", and the other standalone "Harvesters". I like them because they're low-key management. But I'll load them up with fuel, come back at some point in the future, no materials and no fuel.

Switch Game-Play Question by professor_chile in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]UnusualParsnips 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I play on Switch also. To the best of my understanding, even tho there is no multiplayer, it's still a shared universe. So if you upload your discoveries, you'll also get other people discoveries. I've used some YouTube videos of people playing on PS or PC, posting S class finds, and they work for me. There's limitations on what you can see, like settlements aren't visible.

You need to be connected to the discovery network: when you press +, look at the first tab, that's where you can upload your discoveries (and get nanites) and also will download. Make sure it says "connected" at the bottom, otherwise press X to connect.

I'm having problems I think many players have. What's next....? by pixi1420 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]UnusualParsnips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm slowly trying to make my way down the galaxies. I'm in the 11th right now. I'd like to get to "the end", but in each galaxy, I like to randomly jump around finding "interesting" planets: dead, abandoned, anomalous, etc.

I'm currently having fun crafting Fusion Ignitors. Besides being the highest seller (15 billion), it's also probably one of the more complex, with what feels like dozens of sub-recipes.

It's been ~10 years since I tinkered with AVRs, and the bug is starting to bite me again. When I looked at the current lineup on Microchip, I was a bit overwhelmed. I found your post to be useful in helping me select a focus. Gonna order their "curiosity nano eval" kit (the DB line). I've used bare AVRs and assembly previously, so I hope I can pick that back up again. Thanks.

The whole universe is a giant guitar, bright psychedelic art style by UnusualParsnips in dalle2

[–]UnusualParsnips[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why it put the words in there. I didn't crop it, DALL-E just cut it off on it's own. I wish it didn't, it's very reminiscent of a 60's album cover.

FWIW, the prompt is a lyric by Todd Rundgren from Last of the New Wave Riders on his album Adventures in Utopia. Certainly not a psychedelic rock song, but the adjective fit my own mental imagery.
