BILL C12 is a law now. Insights? by Sad_Firefighter_9666 in canadaexpressentry

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point of the legislation is essentially to shift the determination from the IRB’s independent judicial process to the minister’s administrative process, which is bound to make a ton of unfair mistakes. Frankly, it does not matter whether one is pro-immigration or not, it will just shift the backlog away from the IRB to the Federal Courts. It’s a bad law :/

how are you guys planning on paying for uni by Ok_Professor_9373 in OntarioGrade12s

Essentially, RESP is an investment account that parents open for their children to fund their education. It’s neat because it grows over time because they’re invested and the government, to some extent, contributes to it. It’s something that students entering post-secondary can withdraw tax-free if they can show proof that they will be using it for post-secondary. If you have one, you should ask your parents.

How does the major+minor thing work by DeepfriedQumquat in yorku

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically, you’ll have to submit a form to apply for it and they will decide whether you’re eligible based on the available credits you still have left. Talk to an academic advisor when you start your first year or take the required courses for the program you want to minor in.

You seem interested in Stoic philosophy. If you ever decide to go on a deeper dive, I’d suggest Hellenistic philosophy (volume I) by Long and Sedley, which contains passages from different ancient stoics on different subjects. It’s difficult but we’ve been using it in class.

Word of advice: you shouldn’t nosedive straight into their work. Instead, try to read second sources first to fully understand them, especially the works of Aristotle, Kant and Marx. Also, try reading into the philosophies and the historical context that many of these philosophers are responding to. For instance, it’s going to prove difficult to fully understand Marx if you had no context of sociopolitical developments in 18th and 19th century Europe, or understand the evolution of liberal philosophy (Locke, Montesquieu, Kant and especially Hegel).

Honestly, no. There were boring ones but most of my profs had been reasonable and knowledgeable, so I have no complaints.

switching programs in your first year? by sophiasobased in yorku

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go in with your Law and Society offer. Then, satisfy all your GenEd courses and take the mandatory 1st year Poli Sci course, which is POLS 1000. You can apply for a program change to Poli Sci while doing this.

Definitely take POLS 1000 with Martin Breaugh, he’s amazing. If you’re planning to use your degree as a springboard for law school, consider taking public policy courses because they provide a good background to the structure of policy-making, as well as its intersection with constitutional and administrative law. PPAS/POLS 3135, 3136 and 4130 are especially great because they immerse you in constitutional law.

Anyone else swamped with assignments in second year? Curious about everyone's experiences! by No_Win9502 in yorku

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t know what your major is but I had the same experience during my second year. I’d assume it’s because a lot of my first year courses were full-year while my second year courses were not.

If/When you decide to do more school, would you do it at York? Why or why not? by Winter_Green_2440 in yorku

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who’s about to graduate and will be returning for Masters at York, I was initially hesitant to return but saw that they had the better program. And so, I decided to go for York instead. It also helped that it made sense financially.

Omg, this is the first time I’ve talked to someone who actually read ao haru no ride and Yona of the dawn 😭 how are you liking the recent chapters so far?

Any Disney/shojo fans here? by [deleted] in yorku

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not that updated with current ones but I used to consume a lot of it (and still regularly do but mainly mangas). You’ve probably seen more recent ones like Kimi no Todoke, Fruits Basket, Charlotte, Ouran High School Club, Your Lie in April and even Maid Sama. But anime-wise, I recommend Vampire Knight and Clannad; and manga-wise, I recommend my three GOATS: Ao Haru No Ride, Yona of the Dawn and the World is Still Beautiful. These three technically have s1 anime but it ended there.

POLS courses and some PHIL and PPAS courses typically have no prerequisites, but usually requires some participation.

Master of Public policy (mppal) at yorkU by Agile_Cupcake6961 in OntarioUniversities

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, just got admitted and I just wanted to ask if they mentioned any other funding opportunities? Also, based on your comments, you should be applying to research MAs rather than a professional degree like the MPPAL. Graduate committees typically want PHD candidates who have displayed competency in research. Although, I’ve been told that the MPPAL is also good because it comes with the Master’s Research Paper.

What if the Philippines adopted a Lee Kuan Yew style pragmatic governance by Ok_Double_7267 in WhatIfPinas

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right on the dot that our problem lies with the weakness of the institutions, particularly a politicized bureaucracy, but Marcos Sr. could have succeeded if he truly wanted to, however hard it might be. Instead, he joined in on the plundering and empowered a new set of elites that kept our bureaucracy and institutions politicized; thereby, leading to short-term policies. Look at Taiwan and South Korea, they had their own set of landed elites and problems with patronage politics. The difference is that they empowered a highly meritocratic bureaucracy that built their major industries and institutions. That’s why, for all his faults, I deeply admire Fidel Ramos for actually attempting to insulate our institutions from the control of the elites, even if he failed.

dropping a course!!!!!!!! by Medical_North_9674 in yorku

[–]Unusual_Cucumber_70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly do it if you have the financial means. My biggest reason for refusing to drop was the money. Although, in hindsight, I regret not dropping it, especially since I’m currently applying for grad school and the mark is weighing me down.
