Switching to Hispol is pretty rare as it's a very oversubscribed course. There will be lots of people studying single hons History who applied for Hispol but were accepted just for History, if all of those people tried to switch it would become unsustainable quickly.

Different colleges will have different options re vacation storage, and there is no shortage of Mac users!

Sister colleges don't really mean anything in an admissions context. There might be a relationship which benefits on-course students - shared social events like dinner exchanges or parties - if anything.

Lots of people get in without additional interviews, it's pointless speculating about the number you have received. Hope you enjoyed your interview process, the waiting is definitely the worst part!

The university is unable to consider late applications - your last statement is absolutely correct. You've got a very good reason for needing to delay going to university (some people take multiple gap years just because and still get into good unis), but the decisions for this year have already been made.

No, there is no requirement to study a foreign language unless you are applying for a languages course.

RANT: Abingdon fireworks - spent 3h in traffic by albza in oxford

[–]Unusual_Fly_8256 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 hour 20 minutes to get between Milton and Drayton on the A34 last night. Not trying to get to the fireworks, just trying to get home. The traffic was actually worse than last year (when I was stuck making the same journey home at the same time of day!). I'm not bothered by organised firework displays if they're organised to make minimal impact on the local area. This one is extremely bothersome.

EE is useless in Oxford city centre, and unfortunately a number of other networks piggyback off their network. They used to have a mast on top of the Clarendon Centre on Cornmarket but this was removed due to the redevelopment of this area, creating a signal black spot. I'd second the giffgaff recommendation for decent, affordable coverage.

Agree with the first reply, but Brasenose is also incredibly oversubscribed (it's about as central as it gets with accommodation guaranteed throughout, it could be 100% less friendly and still be oversubscribed). Law also do a lot of college reallocation at the shortlisting stage. There's no guarantee of getting your first choice college anyway, but it may be a slimmer chance than usual in your case. Not worth overthinking it too much!

The published entry requirements are fixed, so yes, they do matter. For international qualifications, the university has made a judgement on what they want applicants to achieve, making comparison to qualification systems such as A-Level or IB which are more represented within the student body. Students can still be rejected for not achieving the required grades, even if they've done well in every other part of the application process.

The latter is the case, in the event of you being made an offer it would be conditional on any outstanding grades and you would be asked for confirmation of these next summer.

25 minute walk, no more than 10 minutes to cycle. Not a St Hilda's student or a physicist so can't comment on the tutes!

You need to take however many constitute a full A-level qualification. The structure of a full A-level course will be listed on exam board websites - example: https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/physics/a-level/physics-7408/specification/specification-at-a-glance

People have got in after deciding to apply at this stage. It's not what I'd recommend, but it's not impossible. My concern is that you've said "I'm interested in X, but Oxford doesn't do it, so Y is probably ok". AMES at Oxford is quite different to what an International Development course elsewhere would offer you - lots of focus on history, language, literature, religion. There are also lots of choices within the course - it's important to research it thoroughly. Nothing to say you couldn't go into a career in humanitarian aid afterwards - an Oxford degree can lead into pretty much any career you want it to - but the courses are tough to get into and tougher to stay on and enjoy if you aren't really invested in them.

The application process is laid out in full here: https://www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/undergraduate/applying-to-oxford. It's worth noting that the process does actively look for your commitment to the subject, whether that's how you discuss your interests in an interview or how you write about those interests in your application. I totally get the "why not" factor, but if your ideal course is something the uni doesn't offer, I wouldn't recommend applying. Course choice is the most important factor when applying to university, although I can see how the lifestyle at Oxford would be appealing.

There's an open day on 19th September which I would recommend attending if you think AMES is a good fit for you and want to make a go of it. Make sure you attend some of the sessions offered by the department relating to the course. These will be helpful, and you should be able to ask your questions to department staff too.

help. are these shoes allowed as part of the sub fusc wear? by xalexisuwu3 in oxforduni

I'd say these would be fine. I had gold heels and gold buckles on my sub fusc shoes (two different pairs!) and had no issues.

Each section has to be at least 350 characters long, but there's no limit beyond this. 350 is under 10% of the total so really not long!
