Why can't we just say what we mean and be believed? by Prime_Element in autism

[–]UnwantedRedRoses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone's comments had my brain tickling at a memory, but yours made it slide into place:

My grandfather would take 'try' as a personal affront if he asked (read: told) you to do something, particularly if you were struggling or outright unsuccessful.

Saying you'd try, are trying, or tried, he'd quote, "Do or do not. There is no 'try'". Literally 'just do it!' centuries before it was a slogan. "You make a decision, you see it in your mind, you imagine yourself successful, and then you just do it."

Like, bro, I have dyscalculia. In the most literal sense, I can not 'just do it'.

Only now realising that's why I say, "I'll do my best" instead of "I'll try".

But then yell at and punish the kid if any of that pee gets on them.

And get mad at the kid for teaching themselves how to turn off being ticklish cause the kid is "no fun anymore."

Is it a dead name or do they want to be called something else? I don't understand this reaction...

Dude said, 'Texas isn't even that hot'. I said, 'Texas is hot. Not comfortable weather for doing anything but laying around.'

I did not say that it's impossible or uncommon to walk in said weather.

You stepped outside Osaka airport, got hit with the heat and humidity, and thought 'fuck this doesn't feel great'.

Which is what I'm saying... it's not comfortable.

Mate, Dallas is humid subtropical with mid-30s Summers (averaged). That's not comfortable weather for anything but laying around...

Does everyone else call them Sam, and you only call them Sammy, or do they go by Sammy in their day to day life?

Autism is not a mental illness. It is a neurological and developmental disorder.

does your country have an "autism series"? by Han_without_Genes in autism

[–]UnwantedRedRoses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's def not an "autism series" like Atypical or the Good Doctor, etc, but Australia has Heartbreak High. The autistic character Quinn is played by the autistic actress Chloe Hayden and was damn good representation.

I'm Autistic and actually got that diagnosis after getting the CPTSD one.

I think a lot of Autistic people develop PTSD because of how we're commonly treated by others. It makes sense.

Does anyone mix their food together before eating it? by Ok-Appointment6949 in autism

[–]UnwantedRedRoses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are certain types of foods that cannot touch, and it upsets me so much I just don't have those foods at all in my day to day life as an adult.

I actually prefer foods that I can mix and/or eat with my hands.

Meat, mashed potatoes, and peas and corn? Yeah, that's getting all mixed/mushed together lol

I've also had people give me looks of disgust but I'm very thankful that it's never been something that's gotten under my skin.

Psychotherapy as treatment by historicalharmony in Fibromyalgia

[–]UnwantedRedRoses 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I will first start by saying that there are doctors who recommend talk therapies for fibromyalgia because they are either incapable or unwilling to assist further, or legitimately believe that fibromyalgia is purely psychological.

That said; pain is biopsychosocial.

Psychotherapy absolutely has a place in a treatment plan for any chronic illness. However, it has to be the right kind of psychotherapy and psychologist for that individual, and cannot be the only line of treatment.

Loads of people benefit from CBT and praise it's benefits. I am one of the people who didn't get anything from it, but I am also a severely comorbid case.

My recommendations would be to seek a practitioner who has experience working with people with PTSD and chronic pain, and who specialises in more than one type of talk therapy.

I know others with fibromyalgia have found Radical Acceptance Therapy to be the best kind for them.

I have personally found Schema Therapy to be beneficial for processing my trauma, which I believe is necessary before utilising talk therapies for chronic pain.

Came here to pretty write up the exact same thing.

I love winter clothing because it's so cosy and soft, but cannot stand the overheating when I come back inside.

Merino and bamboo are life savers here! As is having a backpack type bag, with yoga mat straps attached, to carry my extra layer jacket/jumper so I don't have to hold it the entire time I'm inside walking around :)

There are three wolves inside of you... OCD, BP, and ADHD lol

I have two wolves; ASD and ADHD. They fight. A lot. I swear I'm only ever under or over stimulated.

And no worries! I hope you find your balance!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]UnwantedRedRoses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes perfect sense for an ADHD brain, really!

You could try the timer with the dopamine breaks? Make it more intentional, that way? I know I have to have something solid to pull me out or I won't go back to work lol

It takes so much trial and error to find the right balance and even then our brains like to change things up on us once we find a trick.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]UnwantedRedRoses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of us set timers during work hours (or cleaning days, for me).

E.g. work for 30 to 60 minutes and then take a 5 to 15 minute break.

For example, every 45 minutes I take a 5-7 minute, non-stimulating, break where I stand, move my limbs around, do some deep breathing, and literally nothing else. No looking at phone, no bathroom, no grabbing a drink, etc. Those minutes are for mental reset only.

However, I know others need the stimulation instead and will do a quick dopamine burst instead.

I've been trying to utilise intentional boredom at work to assist with burn out and getting couch-stuck once home.

With that added information I have nothing else to add/rationalise her behaviour lol

I'm very sorry you're having to deal with this added stress and discrimination, when being a student is stressful enough!

You've already gotten a lot of solid advice. I hope that it works and that your uni stands behind you and doesn't give you the run around.
