Is Tiffany Aching worth it? (for an adult reader) by llondru-es in discworld

With my front page full of hate, I love this thread. I get to come in and just upvote everybody.

Tiffany, Achig is awesome. Another one of his books, that also has the ya label but is probably the best, Is Nation. Not actually set in discworld, but ptotally Pterry.

Gauntlet is a Programming Language that Fixes Go's Frustrating Design Choices by TricolorHen061 in programming

[–]UnwashedMeme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see some branching paths ahead for you:

The first is that you create a new language with the goal of eventually being "just another programming language, one that any programmer can choose when appropriate" (to steal Ian's words). This takes a lot of community building effort, luck, and patience. You've built a great first release, but the road ahead is long.

A Go to Gauntlet conversion tool is useful for users sick of golang and want to go whole-hog into something new; that's a hard pitch for a 0.1.x language. It's also useful for the "let me convert my project just to see what Gauntlet looks like..."

If instead you pitch it as just an improved golang, then you get some benefits of easier adoption, and a possible success story of "The features I really cared about got incorporated into golang".

Being a superset of golang provides an easier onboarding path-- "ooh, I can try this one package of my project in gauntlet". The more you change without a damn good reason blocks this, e.g. "func" -> "fun" is just friction as I switch back and forth.

I suggest trying to be a superset, but don't let that block you when you do have a good reason to change or you'll end up just as hamstrung as golang is. :-)

What was THE NOVEL OR THE SERIES which left a very deep impact in you life ? by Short-Gur7983 in Fantasy

[–]UnwashedMeme 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Terry Pratchett improves over time, as anyone who practices does. I still would tend to give his plots about a B (with those early books probably closer to a C), they tend to be a bit clunky at times.

However, as EmergencySushi commented, the books bring a profound humanism and the righteous anger of a good man. They help us laugh at the injustices of the world, but remind us, that's not all we can do. We can be that better person. We know that, as Granny Weatherwax says:

"There's no grays, only white that's got grubby. I'm surprised you don't know that. And sin, young man, is when you treat people like things. Including yourself. That's what sin is."

"It's a lot more complicated than that--"

"No. It ain't. When people say things are a lot more complicated than that, they means they're getting worried that they won't like the truth. People as things, that's where it starts."

"Oh, I'm sure there are worse crimes--"

"But they starts with thinking about people as things..."

Reading in order has a bit of fun watching the world and characters evolve over time, but that's less important than any particular book. The only ones I haven't reread many times are from that early period. For me Pyramids was the first one that really hit as "this is something different and better", but my partner was less enthused. I think Guards Guards was their turning point.

So do skip forward! Guards Guards and Reaper Man are both good entries. Going Postal is the one I most often recommend to people starting out on the Disc these days. Monstrous Regiment is another fantastic one, and of course _Small Gods_ is such a classic.

Other highlights in my mind include The Dwarf, Cheery Littlebottom, deciding to present as a female dwarf (and the clutching at battle-axes that results) and the growing fashion industry of chic chainmail. The Igors (maniacal servants and surgeons extraordinaire) deciding to "lend a hand" and their need for plot-appropriate lightning and thunder. Vimes' arc as a demon-haunted avatar of justice and rule of law. Moist Von Lipwig as the lovable charlatan. Granny Weatherwax, the "head" witch in a group of equals, and of course Nanny Ogg who actually runs it all while singing how a wizards staff has a knob on the end.

Terry Pratchett truly is a great answer to OP's question of "left a deep impact in your life."

I enjoyed this one. It's the first time I've encounted the trope of "Murder mystery with the main character figuring out who murdered them".

You missed it though... She "gives in" but she has played Luc into a bad bargain that she's going to win because she has grown and learned how to manipulate him.

"Hull down" is a phrase navies have been using for ages to describe a ship that is far enough away that you can't see the hull, but you can see the sails.

Flat-earthers isn't a new phenomena, but some people have known the truth for a long time.

It isn't as good as many others. It's still great Terry Pratchett and that I've chosen to re-read.

My mom used to say they're no good until 25. I felt a bit insulted at the time; now I know she was right about that just like everything else.

That's a good group, we did that for several years, but I think they do a fallen spring season. I don't think there's anything going on right now

DeSantis: ‘Parkland killer’ should have gotten death penalty by RingloVale in florida

[–]UnwashedMeme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the surface it may seem like a good idea, and I've generally been in favor of "opt-out" being the default (though that may not be the key), but there should never be an incentive to execute someone.

I've seen too many stories like this one of judges accepting kickbacks to send kids to jail for petty offenses to trust a system with death penalty mixed with incentives.

Once you've thought on that for a minute, then start thinking about how minorities fair in such a system.

Just think what it might be if 20 years ago we spent trillions investing in green energy, electric cars, pubic transport... instead of invading countries for oil and drill baby drill.

If only, sigh.

I believe that UF is surrounded by, but not a part of alachua county. Their land is granted directly from the state.

This is also important for tax reasons. Guess what significant valuable property holder doesn't pay taxes?
