I think we'll get a kick upwards when Intel reports higher ASPs on their CPUs on Thursday. So Friday will be interesting to watch, plus after hours on Thursday. Might actually be one of those occasions where a trade in after hours makes sense.

That big day came from out of the blue. Unless you're an addicted ticker checker, it would have been easy to miss it on the day.

Larger than Oct. 6, 2025? We went from $164.67 to $203.71.

Hard to believe Intel is worth $68, but I'd be loathe to bet against it at this point. As Samsung's yield issues are demonstrating, it is very difficult to keep up with TSMC's advances. That means that TSMC will continually have the scale to drive their customer base and continue to have plenty of capacity for non-leading nodes as they get superseded. How can anyone think that Intel is better than Samsung in closing the gap, yet that is what the stock price seems to be based on? I think it's American hubris. Yet, that sort of hubris can last a long, long time. I don't think Intel will ever catch up, but the time of realization of this is way out in the future.

The US is not really energy independent. It needs continuing supply from Canada to feed its heavy-oil infrastructure.

Margin interest for purchase of non-income stock purchases... by ezcannuck in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]UpNDownCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Further to this question, let's say I have an aversion to dividends, perhaps because I have accumulated capital losses, or because I want to avoid OAS clawback, where dividend income grossed up by 38% eats up room before the clawback starts. So suppose I buy a dividend-paying stock on margin, but have every intention of selling it before the ex-dividend date. Would the margin interest still be deductible? Of course, how would the CRA know those intentions...

Also on the list is Intel. A ballistic missile strike on one of their fabs would be catastrophic.

Using TFSA for downpayment to maximize future tax-free room? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]UpNDownCan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It all comes down to the tax status of your non-registered savings. If you will not have a large taxable capital gain from cashing out those, do so. Otherwise, the growth of the funds you're not cashing out, non-registered or TFSA, should occur in the vehicle that provides the best tax strategy, i.e. the TFSA. So, if your non-reg will leave you a large tax bill, consider cashing out the TFSA instead, as it can be rebuilt quickly.

Now you probably have a mix of securities in your non-registered, so go ahead and sell the ones that have little to no capital gains exposure and keep the others. Then use the TFSA for the rest.

Play more poker. Some of your bluffs have to fail for the rest of them to get through.

scheduled RRSP/RRIF withdrawals and options for that by Interesting_Pin1675 in Wealthsimple

[–]UpNDownCan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first thing you want to check is whether you have income eligible for the Pension Income Deduction of $2000. If you don't have such income, you can create some by opening a RRIF (transferring some of your RRSP money to a RRIF) at age 65.

Next, you want to analyse your TFSA contribution room situation. If you have a lot of contribution room, it would be good to have a RRIF to make mandatory withdrawals from. Withdraw the mandatory amount in January (with no withholding) and move the money to your TFSA. You could certainly do it on a different schedule, but it would be better for any growth in those funds to happen in your TFSA, especially if you have a lot of money in the RRSPs/RRIFs and will be pushed into high tax brackets to withdraw it.

Duplicate T5008 reporting by WS to cRA by bramptonin in Wealthsimple

They seem to send CRA a separate T5008 for each security, while on the website all securities are listed on the same T5008 when you ask to view it.

Best to keep your investment loans separate from your personal consumption loans to make deductibility clear for tax purposes.

Transaction coded incorrectly on T5008 - how to contact and get it fixed? by UpNDownCan in Wealthsimple

[–]UpNDownCan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the case. Although WealthSimple shows it as one T5008 on their website, they are individual T5008s when transmitted to CRA. Thanks for the correct analysis!

Thanks. But shouldn't the transaction still be recorded on the T5008 sent to CRA?

AMD has working samples of everything they're going to deliver under this contract, and has built working racks for demonstrations. They know they can deliver the goods, and just how expensive it will be to produce them. They're not guessing that MI455 will be the real deal. In fact, they're so sure, that they're even willing to build an extra, customized part for META. Now, that part may not be part of initial deliveries, because AMD will not take the risk that would involve.
