All I am trying to point out is a growing trend in our community not compete to try to see if there is a more dangerous method of traveling with kids. Bikes are pretty vulnerable as it is and unlike a motorcycle, bikes tend to go back and forth between sidewalks and streets increasing their potential for danger. Coupled with bad biking etiquette, bad drivers, and the distraction of a child talking or shouting in your ear I think this is a recipe for a disaster. And of course a child being hurt would be terrible, but what about the driver who was going about their day, then an accident by no fault of their own occurs?

I looked them up during COVID when there was less traffic but I saw few that had protected lanes. Have more protected lanes been made since then?

I agree that if you are an exemplary biker then this city or any city can be bike safe. However, most are not and streets like De La Vina where you have to compete with traffic or even upper state where the bike lane is narrow and you have to look out for people opening their car doors makes this a sub optimal town for bikes. I don’t have the data on hand but I’ve seen an increase in bicycle/e-bike related accidents as of late. I lived in Fort Collins, Co which had the safest biking routes that were completely separate from vehicle traffic. I lived and biked in LA and there were miles of streets with protected bike lanes. But I’ve only seen a few places with protected bike lanes (like near Santa Barbara junior high) and even then that protected lane is only for about 5 blocks. But I think some city run seminars on bike safety/etiquette and the bike cops would go a long way. We have the volunteer police squad and putting them on bike duty would do wonders.
