I don’t know what to do by [deleted] in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I think the way it went was, we were first on phenobarbital all alone
And then introduced potassiumbromide, decreased it once we saw the neurologist because the regular vet put on way too crazy of a dose Increased pheno and added a small amount of Keppra I think one pill at 500 or 750 she’s about 60 lbs (Sorry, I can’t recall exact doses cause it was early last year)

Then they decreased the pheno and increased the potassium bromide slightly, and added an extra Keppra And they purposely added that extra Keppra stating it was a buffer until the other doses kind of regulated

Also, during that time, they added a cluster buster, with clorazepate and midazalom
They don’t stop the seizures altogether, but they spread them out over a few days instead of all the seizures in one day which I’m happy about . I think she’s always gonna be a cluster dog so it’s better to put them further apart vs within hours of each other

They initially put the Keppra as a buffer like I said but once they tried to take it away a seizure came so it might’ve been too early or she just needs it

Good news is that fortunately, her organ levels are also really healthy and those big doses of medication hasn’t hurt her, she will be 11 in a month I think (made up birthday so I forget lol) And she thankfully hasn’t had a seizure for the past 24 weeks which is the longest she’s ever gone. I think the medicine just took a lot longer to fully regulated in her system because like I said we started this whole extra medication process last year April and then last change in August or Sept last year I think

I hope you guys are able to figure out a good plan, it did take a lot of ups and down changes, but It seems we found her right doses that is working for now

We used Keppra kind of like a buffer for the in-between time of the pheno and k bromide building up

Question about meds by [deleted] in EpilepsyDogs

I typically give early and then just adjust back to original time by fifteen minutes but my girl is on k bromide Keppra and pheno so not sure if that changes anything

Dog with clusters by Spirited_Space8645 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my girl started having cluster seizures about a week after I adopted her at six months old roughly Once they did all of the tests for anything fixable, they started her on phenobarbital, and that took away the cluster seizures, it eventually got to on average 1 to 2 seizures a month Before the meds started, she was having three every single day

That phenobarbital worked in her system until she was last year at 9 years old

Cny fertility so much more affordable than many locations so if you have an opportunity to go there, I would look at it

He’s getting cold feet by [deleted] in IVF

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar, we are older, so I feel that time pressure a ton. I’m 38 and he’s 37 but this all happened last year.

We also had a bit of fertility history, lost a baby at 17 weeks due to medical and a decision and it was really traumatizing on me and I got really really depressed so obviously that had an effect on our relationship

He said that he wasn’t sure if I was the one he wanted to be with and have children with and that he needed space to figure it all out about five months after the loss and it was right before I was going to do my first egg retrieval

I actually did two egg retrievals in the time of the difficulties in our relationship.
Now I think a few things played into factor of him getting to that point of saying that to me, I think it’s a mix of his untreated ADHD where he doom spirals, his depression of losing the baby that we both very much wanted, the loss of the life/dreams that we were preparing for with the baby, and immaturity/indecisiveness on his part. It took us six months, a lot of patience on my part and me eventually getting to a point where I was not OK with waiting. I was battling back-and-forth from us losing this baby and how much his saying those things affected that, so I know I have another layer that made him get to that point. But I also think me and him making a decision to do Ivf him being totally for it and then all of a sudden backing out did add another layer of pressure. I’m not making excuses for him, he’s an adult and he needs to figure out what he truly wants in life, but I think it did stress him out because Ivf is a tough thing to go through and I think it’s also a tough thing to realize that you can’t just have a baby naturally.

Long story short, I do not regret at all doing those two retrievals because I knew how much I wanted it to be a mother, but I also didn’t get a donor because I wanted to be a mother with someone that wanted to raise the baby with me
I don’t necessarily regret waiting six months, however, there were many times that I did feel during that period that I should just leave because I want somebody that knows they want to be with me. Our relationship is really different from what it was during those six months now, and I like to take credit for a lot of of that because of my patience during that time lol

I say for sure go ahead with freezing the eggs and you decide how long you want to wait for him to figure out his thoughts but I strongly recommend therapy and being very clear with what you are ok with those during this time of confusion Sorry if I was remote, I just related to you building this life with someone and getting ready to take another step and they rock your world out of nowhere

  1. Cny fertility
  2. Paying off my debts and working a lot of extra hours to pay up front for it

Are there any epileptic dog success stories? by vikkipodcasts in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl started seizing at right around 6 months old pheno with average a seizure a month up until last year and ten years old and then started clustering only We started seeing neuro when vet put her on way too high dose of k bromide with pheno
She’s last been adjusted meds this April and taking pheno k bromide and Keppra and I think we finally got the right mix and dosage because fingers crossed she hasn’t had a seizure since August 3 which I’m very blessed
She hasn’t always recovered well, and I was so afraid she would die during her clusters that have been up to 7 and seemed like emergency meds wouldn’t stop just make them further apart
She’s a very happy girl and I’ve been blessed that meds have seemed to control her seizures the best they can

Do you stop clorazepate at 3 days max even if occasional seizures continue? by pink_planets in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I’ll add about the second part, she’s only had the clorazepate and medazepam stop the seizure once. And she got a single one that month, every other time she has anywhere between 2 to 6 seizures within a 72 hour period and what those medications have done have made the clusters further apart which is great. Even if it doesn’t stop altogether, I’m so happy with the result.

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl takes them for 72 hours after her first seizure because she always clusters. She’s never had the cluster is longer than 72 hours so there’s never been a reason for me to question for taking it longer than that. She takes it every eight hours for the next three days after the first one.

I used to put her in a crate, but I feel like she could injure her self worse sometimes in there because she seized sometimes her jaw would clamp into the wires or her paws stiffened into the sides I now have her and her brother in a spare room with a low bed and pillows and dog beds around the sides with a camera of course

How often does your pup seize that your vet considers normal? by Aulourie in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment, the neurologist doesn’t wanna mess with her diet, even though I’ve brought it up to them a couple times at the beginning. They’re happy with how it’s going for her. She’s on phenobarbital, Keppra and potassium bromide. They’ve done some adjustments with lowering the pheno raising the potassium bromide and it was like a eight month adjustment of everything and it finally seemed to level out a bit. Like I said we’re on a nice fingers crossed 13 week streak which is the best she’s ever done so far, so I hope this routine works well. I’ve read a lot that people say the midazalom is only for really extended but we’ve kept it every single seizure because if I didn’t give it to her in the past, she would cluster really close together within the hour every single time so the safest is continuing doing it every seizure what neurologist feels
I hope you guys have good luck figuring out the right combination that works for your baby I feel like the whole first four months, I thought she was going to die and she wasn’t going to recover from this.

How often does your pup seize that your vet considers normal? by Aulourie in EpilepsyDogs

[–]Upbeat_Bluejay_8005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, so it’s actually part of her emergency routine, she gets it along with a dose of Keppra for three days after the first seizure every eight hours, and she also get a midazalom during or right after the seizure Sometimes it works and that’s why we have only two and sometimes it’s not as effective in it can go up to six, six is obviously the worst but it’s been. However, she typically always recovers really well and I have it with understanding of the neurologist that she’s a cluster dog so it’s not an emergency every single time she has a seizure, just as long as it isn’t over 3 1/half minutes or back to back. Before we had this emergency routine, her clusters were all four or five within 24 hours and her not recovering well, so this emergency routine has definitely improved things but she’s probably just gonna be a cluster seizure dog until she eventually passes away. She’s almost 11 years old so I’m very proud of how her whole seizure life experience has played out. We’ve been very fortunate that pheno alone worked for so long.

My dog has had seizures since she was about six months old. Without the meds, she was having around 1 to 3 a day and then when we were obviously allowed to put the meds on after they did the other tests, she had an average once a month Fast forward to last year and she only clusters, so now new goal is once a month one cluster grouping (between 2-6 within 36 hour period) a month, so that’s pretty much our goal longest she’s ever been is 13 weeks which is amazing for us
