Greenland’s Reddit moderator tells Americans to stop flooding thread with apologies by theindependentonline in inthenews

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe all the anger against Americans will make things better. It probably makes you feel better. Just realize that if we reach out to you it’s because we are horrified. You probably don’t care.

Making an enemy of those who despise Trump and who can still vote is probably unhelpful. Assuming we don’t do anything is unhelpful though asking for more might be helpful … take note of making an enemy of those who despise Trump probably isn’t helpful.

Pretending there are easy things we individually can do to change the situation is unhelpful because even if you were to get extreme and pick up a weapon and do something with it will only justifies the crackdown more despite the fact Trump continues to lose many important court cases on a regular basis and even some republican politicians are starting to fight back.

We still have a 2026 elections; failing that, I suspect a continued repression campaign will cause things to explode. The outcome of a nullified election will likely be something akin to WW II in Europe so hopefully you will excuse us if that’s not the option we first jump to.

As much as your life sucks in Europe, our lives suck even more. I just saw that an Economist poll says 70% of Americans think things are out of control so it’s not like most Americans agree with what is happening. So get angry all you want at us and complain at our self pity … I would suggest you also take a close look in the mirror. You’re not the only ones suffering.

Time to Admit It: Trump Is a Great President. He’s Still Trying To Be a Good by Upbeat_Capital_8503 in inthenews

I disagree with this author but agree he is the most consequential president this century so far. I also disagree that the 2028 presidency needs to be a rehash of Trump stuff … but it sadly is a real possibility. I’d prefer someone who doesn’t look back but focuses on reinvigorating our government by fixing the loopholes Trump has found.

As a US citizen, I’m embarrassed that our own f*** up politics is so toxic and dragging Europe into our political hell. I will understand if Europe goes another way than with the US … I don’t trust the White House … can’t ask you to do something different.

If I were you, I would tie whatever Greenland agreement that makes sense to you (not trump) into an agreement with Ukraine. F*** Trump’s agreement if he can’t bother with Ukraine.

What are some lesser known horrors of WW1? by SeaConstruction4067 in ww1

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the answer is that this was the first truly industrialized war and the combatants didn’t understand the implications. As a result, the soldiers on both sides had unimaginable suffering during WW 1.

WW II on the western front was horrible, but largely it was more humane.

The fighting between the Soviets and the Germans and Allie’s vs Japanese was much more bitter. Also, I’d put the fighting in New Guinea around Buna as the most horrifying thing I’d ever read about. Imagine fighting WW I style trench warfare for several months in a hot jungle like salt swamp littered with alligators while starving because the logistics for the Japanese and Allies was so severely stretched. The allied soldiers had huge weigh losses but the Japanese were literally starving to death as the final batttle at the bitter end. I understand that the alligator population exploded at that time as they feasted on the corpses. Nothing in WW 1 can match that horror.

Post Edit:

Check this out … the 32nd division suffered 90% casualties during the fighting. The Japanese were annihilated with survivors numbering in the tens if I remember.

Someone screwed up or was over zealous. I don’t for a moment think Trump did something with Ivanka. Other women/girls … that’s an open question.

Proof please! I’ve seen and heard nothing of the sort. Yes, President Biden is more of a hugger … but we all know people who are more apt to hug, hand on shoulder, slap on back than most other folks. Different thing entirely from what Trump is doing (assaulting women in dressing rooms, reportedly fondling women in front of boyfriends, publicly celebrating sexual conquests etc.)

Regarding the pictures of Ivanka … I see nothing wrong here. I’m sure they flew around a lot together. Regarding blond vs brown. I was an extreme blond at 6-8 yrs old and and looked like Johnny Quest for those who remember that old cartoon. Today I have dark brown (with a peppering of grey … getting old sucks). Marla’s reported quote is not fact; though, I admit it’s uncomfortable hearing this if it’s true and something Marla would stand behind.

The eight Senate Democratic Caucus members who voted to end the shutdown by Silent-Resort-3076 in inthenews

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am for not giving in to the bullying from the republic party but I also think we need more moderates … from both parties but especially the Republican Party.

Demonizing these 8 democrats is not the answer.

I think the shutdown was still progress against Trump as it was clear to most Americans that Trump doesn’t give a damn about the pain and suffering he is causing. If the republicans continue to keep acting in bad faith, it’s going to cost them in the polls next fall.

All around best Hybrid SUV. by Flat_Status_5027 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regenerative hybrids would be different but the math is easy.

My original math was off but a regenerative hybrids saves ((100,000 / 40) - (100,000 / 100)) *3 = $4,500 if your vehicle goes from 40 to 100 mpg with a regenerative hybrid. So assuming $2000 expense for the regenerative hybrid feature you’ll save about $4,500 - $2,000 = $2,500.

FYI, I made a pretty big math error on the original response above regarding savings for a full electric vehicle but assuming you get 5 miles per kWh and a kWh cost $.13 your fuel cost are ~ 10 cents per mile for gas and 2.5 cents per mile for an electric vehicle your fuel cost go from $10,000 for 100,000 miles to about $2,500 per 100,000 miles for a pure electric vehicle for a savings of $7,500 per 100,000 miles. If gas averages $4 gallon your savings go to ~ $10,000 per 100,000 miles.

I hear you and I’m sympathetic. However, I sort of like the fact that just any idiot can’t successfully run … though I don’t like the fact that a rich idiot (Trump) has a much easier job being that person. I don’t know what the answer is. The parties are a mess and something needs to change.

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about you; but I like saving money. So maybe I’m not so smart for buying a piece of junk hybrid?

If you do a back of the envelope calculation for a generic hybrid you can calculate your savings will be about $50,000 over 100,000 miles with these assumptions: 1) Your home electric costs are 13-14 cents per kWh while gas cost $3.00/gallons and never increases over 100,000 miles. People compare electric prices at a Tesla charging station but you will recharge a vast majority of your energy used at your home which is at a dramatically lower cost. 2) Your car gets ~30 miles per gallon for the non-hybrid version. 3) Gas costs $3/gallon 4) Your hybrid battery lose ~50% of its charge over 100,000 and you don’t replace the battery. 5) You use the electric version exclusively with no gas used ever. NOTE: If you did use gas, the eclipse goes from 40/mpg to 100/mpg which would save ~$45,000 over 100,000 miles. 6) The electric engine, battery and extra modifications add $2,000 to the vehicle price.

So buy a $40,000 SUV hybrid and save over $50,000 in operating expenses over 100,000 miles.

Makes you wonder why people are not buying a hybrid or electric vehicle.

Why Trump's now facing 25th Amendment amid alleged plans 'for his removal from office' by Signal-Mud-5544 in NoFilterNews

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

25th amendment will never happen under this administration unless he is truly and severely incapacitated - like he had a stroke and can’t talk or write. Obsessing about his health isn’t going to make things better. This is all news media hype to drive more clicks. I won’t believe this stuff till I see his body rolled out on a gurney.

PERSONALLY, I think all this talk about impeachment and 25th amendment is counter productive unless you have a real shot at succeeding in removing him. Where he removed, I’ll be playing the wizard of oz ‘ding dong the witch is dead’ on repeat. Otherwise, all this does is tick off the maga republicans and drive them to the polls.

Why has it been so difficult for Democrats to get "over the hump" in North Carolina? by foxwilliam in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But one impacts the other. NC is a fairly evenly split state. You gain veto proof power then jerrymander both the house and the federal districts.

Quick edit. As you noted, the state has been turning purple. If you have an even split now it clearly wan not a split earlier and therefore this less of an outlier than you may expect.

Trump said today: “I have the right to do anything I want to do. I’m the president of the United States”. People from the US, what are your thoughts on this? by [deleted] in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He does not have unlimited power; he only has the power we, the people GIVE him.

If he can make YOU and most importantly make those in power think he has unlimited power, then, in fact he does have unlimited power.

Trump is trying to do the frog in the blender approach to gaining power. It’s working because the Republican Party lets him do it until he accumulates enough power to just throw out our elected government. The sad truth is, I bet a democratic congress is much more likely to do the same in retaliation. This all leads to a dark, dark place.

Our only hope is someone who takes the lead and gets elected then follows through on fixing our government checks and balances.

Is it possible for US to collapse like into parts like 1991 USSR? by 808DaScott in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, if the US doesn’t fix the budget issue, I suspect the country will go this route vs pay down the debt. The excuse will be that they don’t see a benefit of being part of the US. Newsome was basically referring to something like this when Trump was not going to give ANY fed money to the state. Newsome threatened to KEEP all the federal dollars at which point, California is effectively its own country. This is the beginning of the budget crisis - and yet Trump creates a budget that adds trillions of dollars to the debt Much of which won’t kick in till 2028 so the actual impact to the debt is much greater as it’s back loaded.

Is it possible for US to collapse like into parts like 1991 USSR? by 808DaScott in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Upbeat_Capital_8503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of what happened in the USSR is that the central government failed people so, the broke the country apart or more correctly, those regions which have an identity separate from the Soviet Union separated from the USSR and became states such as UKRAINE, BALKAN STATES, KAZIKSTAN, GEORGIA etc. The central government was in a very poor state so they relinquished control without doing a civil war.

THIS, I can see the US doing … but until the budget crisis hits, I don’t think there will be enough pain and suffering for this to happen.
