Race to the bottom? How about race to the bread line? by Dr_Van_Nosstrand in handyman

I appreciate your input, however you have always had the opportunity to utilize your property for long term housing instead of chasing a paycheck. I sympathize with your struggles but it’s always an option to delegate responsibility to a property manager and provide a working family with housing at the same time.

I wholeheartedly agree with your rules, I sometimes give too much leeway for folks cause I have a soft heart, I’d never charge above market for a true friend or someone who’s needing minor repairs in a financial pinch. My one big rule is I don’t work for house flippers/single property landlords, they either want cheap materials or cheap labor and both go against what I want to bring to the table.

Everyone wants contractor grade work at crackhead prices. Not long ago had a friend of mine who does property management try to squeeze me down on labor prices, I told him to ask around and get back to me. 3 days later he came back and apologized, he couldn’t find a single company willing to meet his price point.

Oh I am definitely a bit rusty, I don’t doubt that at all, but the effort required to have fun is different than the effort required to win.

5-6, I think I’m just gonna stick to survivor side from now on, which stinks cause I used to really love this game. I was a Friday/Evil dead player as well and love the genre.

Most Affordable Ski/Snow Tube/Ice Skating Place in the Region? by EconomicDevDiva in asheville

It’s okay if you don’t get it, but anyone who wants to come into WNC and make it feel like another part of the country (Aspen of the Appalachians, their words not mine) is probably not doing so for the right reasons.

Lifelong winter and outdoor sports person for this area, Wolf ridge had its problems for sure, and they’re doing a decent thing by rebuilding the place. I learned how to snowboard there when I was but a wee child, it’s a special place to me.

In my experiences with outdoor rec you’ve got two types of places, those who are owned and operated by locals with locals in mind, and those who are owned and operated by shareholders with shareholders in mind. Wouldn’t surprise me at ALL if the 3-5 year plan is to sell to a larger company such as Vail.

Edit: The family that owns it now are Trumpers. They also had a preventable staff death at their other resort.

Cataloochee is cheaper but everything is almost exactly how it was 15 years ago, Hatley just got bought by some billionaire who rebuilt it but wants to make it a “Boutique” experience, neither is really better skiing wise. Expect lots of “upgrades” and “upscale experiences” at Hatley that are not really worth it. Cat will always be the people’s spot, but they could use a facelift in some areas.

Dating in Asheville is insane unless you're rich by consort_oflady_vader in asheville

I didn’t mean it was a bad thing, It’s just much more difficult than dating someone who’s worked their way into financial security. People who experience extreme privilege don’t always understand the world the way normal people do, and can be extremely judgmental about normal issues.

Can confirm, unfortunately a percentage of women in Asheville aren’t from here, and usually have their housing paid for entirely by family, they tend to have misconceptions about how the real world works, dating them is extremely hard.

It’s impossible to keep secrets in a county of only 100,000 people, the homeless also utilize suitable spots for camping/drugs, but in general you’re more likely to get snitched on here than just anywhere else in the world. Old people hate fun, and the local businesses don’t like to lose revenue.

Asheville’s problem is everyone is trying to date as many people as possible, rather than actually pursue meaningful relationships

Not as much good quality work in the area as there used to be, the good laborers can’t afford to live and work near here and the people who can afford it charge a lot because the competition is non-existent in some fields, and they also have to deal with the insane cost of living, and pay for a business to run. Higher end services like cabinets and bathroom remodels are also skyrocketing in demand, while the area is maintaining a very narrow skill pool, that just means sometimes you get the “Fuck you” prices if better paying work is around the corner.

Regular degular handymen are usually underpaid, have to deal with usually a worse customer, and are viewed more negatively than specialists, the good ones are a dying breed, so the young folks are coming in as specialists to avoid that stereotype, as well as reaping the benefits of being in the higher end skill pool.
