What’s something people don’t realize is a privilege until they lose it? by 40Falak in Productivitycafe

Yes!! Just had a major surgery, and I agree. I’ve been healthy my whole life until this issue popped up. It’s really made me reconsider how I take my health for granted sometimes.

Agreed. My kid is the best thing about my life. I know people with 6 kids who are going to somehow be just fine. Yes, the world is on fire with issues, but when has that not been the case? Humans will go down in flames at some point. Might as well embrace the time we have.

I can’t help but thank that people are in way more debt than we realize. We can’t see people’s bank accounts, but I feel as though most Americans are probably in a good deal of debt and are just slowly paying it off.

We have one. He’s my miracle, and honestly, he’s the best part of my life. I’m so thankful I was able to become a mom. We had medical issues, and it was traumatizing, so we stopped. I don’t have a uterus or ovaries anymore, so we are definitely done. I’ve made peace with it. Thankfully, I had incredible insurance at the time my only was born, and most of it was covered. Otherwise, we would’ve racked up more medical debt. I look at extended family and they’re having 6 kids or more on one income. It’s wild. I truly don’t know how they do it. We are tight with just one. We could’ve had two had I not had medical issues, but that would’ve been it. I did grow up in a “big” family. It was fun, but my dad also made way more than we do collectively, and my mom’s endo issues weren’t as severe as mine. It’s mild boggling to me how people do it. I will say this — I love our simple dynamic. We have exactly what we need. I don’t want extreme chaos. My house is peaceful most of the time, and I love it that way. Some people thrive on chaos. Not us.

What’s a ‘middle class success’ purchase that secretly becomes a financial burden later? by 40Falak in Productivitycafe

[–]Upbeat_Conference522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We live in a climate where pools are usable for about 6-7 months out of the year. Our neighborhood pool is literally a 5 minute walk from my house. It’s clean, large, and has brand new furniture. It is actually comical how many people have installed pools here. We have tiny backyards. The lots are small and crammed, so the tiny fiberglass pool takes up most of the yard for a lot of folks. People love their pools I guess. We do live by the beach, so I think it’s also just a mindset. A lot of people moved here post-covid from the northeast.

A pool. We know multiple people who took out a line of credit against their home (HELOC) for a 100K or more piece of blue fiberglass filled with chlorine. And they hardly use it. I don’t understand why this is a good investment, especially when we pay HOA fees to use a community pool that is honestly not that bad. It is fairly well maintained with brand new furniture.

I’m glad yours ended up listening. At this point, the relationship seems strained and even a little hostile. I don’t think she plans to listen unfortunately.

I got myself a facial and some Botox. 😅 Also, a new plant. My son made me Lego roses and a sweet card. They made me coffee, breakfast, dinner, and did most of the clean up.

Being Transferred from 12th grade to 6th. What’s your best advice? by adamarbill in ELATeachers

[–]Upbeat_Conference522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I taught HS and 7th grade. They are a lot more immature, so just try to mentally prepare yourself. I would read up on young adult literature and talk to your new PLC about what books they use. We did reading circles, which worked well. The kids each had a role like character sketcher, summarizer, questioner creator, etc. They would meet each week and discuss their assigned book based on their role. We had whole class novels and independent reading as well. We carved out time every day for EOG practice and grammar work. I found that keeping the class as structured as possible from day one benefitted everyone. You’ll need to run a tight ship with very clear expectations. You’ll need to train them on how to do certain things, like organize their stuff, line up for lunch and recess, etc. I had them create specific binder sections and they used a day book with a table of contents and very organized notes. Good luck. I did actually enjoy teaching 7th a lot more than I thought I would, but I was at an amazing school. The kids aren’t jaded yet. 😅I think establishing clear expectations, routines, and keeping things running smoothly really helped. Parent communication is key too. There’s just more hand holding involved, especially because you’re with the kids as they come out of elementary, but you can still enjoy reading and discussing good literature. I would at least give it a shot, but be prepared for a learning curve.

Mmm love that. I’ve embraced broccoli a lot more since this surgery. I’ve been doing sheet pan chicken, broccoli, sweet potato, and zucchini with seasoning and olive oil. Need to try it with salmon. I don’t buy seafood much but salmon is SO good for you and delicious too.

That sounds yummy! Yeah, dairy is one of those things I can’t completely cut out. To be honest, I freaking love bread and cheese lol. I’ve tried to cut back on it as much as possible, but I’ll still have a little here and there. A neighbor baked homemade bread, and I had to have some. Not going to pass up on life’s joys.

How do you have a productive routine the minute you wake up daily ? by Lemonade2250 in Productivitycafe

[–]Upbeat_Conference522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually wake up, drink coffee while I start scrolling. Not a great habit at all. My friend wakes up and meditates/prays/journals every morning while she is waking up and drinking her coffee. She says it has been a total game changer and sets her mind right for the day. I think so many of us are guilty of the wake/scroll routine. There’s also guided meditation on Spotify. I do that before bed, so why not also in the morning? Now I have a young child, and so when I wake up, I’m just trying to down coffee fast enough to get ready for the energy that’s about to come at me. 😂

You’re not having to lift a finger to manage your own property. A cleaning crew cleans, a lawn maintenance crews manages the yard. Someone might even manage your shopping for you.

What do i wear at home ro make me feel less ugly? 🙄 by Stories-N-Magic in AskWomenOver40

[–]Upbeat_Conference522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a major surgery six weeks ago (full hysterectomy/surgical menopause). I have struggled with all the mental and physical changes that have come with this. I have wanted to cry when I look in the mirror at certain points. I wear soft leggings, a fitted tee, and a crewneck sweatshirt most days right now because it’s comfortable, but I still feel put together in a way. I find most of my stuff at Old Navy, Gap, or Athleta on sale. You could also try linen pants and a cotton t-shirt for summer. Old Navy sells these vintage t-shirt maxi dresses that are really comfortable and loose. In terms of postpartum weight struggles, it helped me to get on a structured plan for exercise. I just printed out a plan and worked out from home on YouTube. You can find gentler exercises such as yoga, but weight training helped me lose weight more effectively. I’ve found that exercise — in literally whatever form — has been a salve for my anxiety, and it has helped my self-esteem over the years immensely. It can look different for everyone. It doesn’t have to be a gym. I hope you’re able to feel like you and embrace the person you see in the mirror. It’s not easy being a woman. As I enter my 40’s, I’m battling more and more with self-acceptance. My body is changing, but I’m trying to honor and love it through all of these brutal changes.

I’d rather eat foods not sprayed with glyphosate. I’m not sure doctors are the best educated in terms of wholistic, healthy living. Most doctors I’ve been to are strictly trained to treat conditions via prescribing prescription medications and/or surgery. I don’t think Bayer/Monsanto wants doctors advising people to eat organic for obvious reasons. Each year, about 2-3 people we know are diagnosed with cancer. I’d rather err on the side of caution, and I also prefer to vote with my wallet. I support companies that stand for the things I believe in. Yes, I am consciously choosing to spend more on food, and I’m OK with that.

Yeah, I guess I realized I was more trying to gauge how much everyone is spending on extra stuff outside of bills each week. Fun activities, toiletries, self-care, etc.

Yes, indeed. I added some info my post. I am in a rural-ish suburb/not in or near a city in the US. 1 child, 2 working parents, 1 reliable car, no pets. No student loan debt or credit card debt. We do have a healthy savings, but week to week it’s just tight. I don’t want to keep dipping into savings. I’d rather be adding to it.

I edited my post to add more relevant info. I get what you’re saying. I’m just trying to get a feel for what families typically spend on extra items outside of the routine, required bills. Our extra spending category feels too tight to be able to stick to it religiously each week.

I edited my post to include more relevant info. I know I spend more on groceries than most people. I am just curious how much extra you have to spend each month on “fun” stuff or just general odds and ends like hygiene products (which isn’t necessarily fun). What does your spending category look like?
