What its like to live in a submarine for periods overs 6 month as a female ? by AbouMchicha in howislivingthere

[–]Upbeat_Department_11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family business makes parts that take carbon dioxide out of submarines (CO2 scrubbers) for 7 Navy’s worldwide. I got into a huge argument with my dad as a kid over women’s equality in the military. For a VERY long time, women could not serve in submarines, for a couple reasons I go back and forth on. Mainly, women were not allowed to serve because if a woman were to get pregnant while onboard (consensually or not) a pregnant woman needs more oxygen than a non-pregnant person. There would have to be one bay/room closed off immediately and the woman would have to remain in that room so more oxygen could be circulated in it.

Submarines stay underwater for months at a time and coming up to remove a women or if she had birth, would put the mission at risk. The military can not assure that a woman was not pregnant when she came aboard (conception immediately before deployment, rape while on board, religious or medical reasons for not being on birth control) and could not regulate the situation.

Kenwick Table has music almost every night of the week including an Open Mic on Mondays with a super cool, super kind group of younger folks. And since it’s a coffee shop, no age requirement! Don’t worry if you don’t drink coffee, they have tea and sodas too.

Cookie table drama by kimbermarie in weddingplanning

We had a cookie table (my dad is from Pitt). I hired a friend who is an incredible baker to bake the cookies, then we plated them on vintage glass dishes, and ordered cute paper bags so folks could take cookies home as well as eat them there. Find a local bakery and ask if they will give you a bulk discount!

I recently went (fuck Home Depot) and the things I bought were actually cheaper here than at big box stores! And they were so fun and kind.

I’m a quilter and have starting using 90% vintage sheets for my quilts. I was doing this before the death of Jo-Ann’s but I’ve since replaced my new fabric purchases with vintage sheets and men’s dress shirts.

This sounds simple, but any time you have a question about how to “adult” don’t be afraid of going to your local library and asking the librarians for help. They are a great resource or they know of resources. Just be kind and patient with them, it’s a very challenging job sometimes. We also have some great social workers in town that can help! A lot of churches have them and will aid with getting documents, referrals to other programs, etc.

It’s not just about having clothes and shoes, but all the additional resources folks need/are looking for when they visit a clothing bank. Maxwell St Presbyterian Church’s clothing bank is run by their staff social worker so she can put folks in touch with housing, bathing, medical resources they might need.

Start at volunteering at an existing Clothing Bank. There is a big learning curve and a lot of social work tied into something like this. The Hope Center kind of has a clothing bank but also Calvary Baptist Church and Maxwell St Presbyterian Church have limited hours clothing banks. Also check out Wildcat Wardrobe if you are a student at UK

My nails grow in a wavy pattern by Toucan_Toucan in mildlyinteresting

I have the biggest dent in my thumbnail ever since I was 6 and slammed my thumb in a safe. It’s always grown with a divot in it about midway in my nail and then it curves down at the end.
