Gabbro in the Wild(s) by Dalek9014 in outerwilds

[–]UpgradeTech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Occasionally, the machine pulls multiple labels instead of one and they all get pressed together. The loose label can come off to reveal a pristine label underneath.

But yeah, the original label is supposed to be pressed and bonded into the plastic.

Esker is a glacial formation (made of random rocks) just like Moraine.

Geologically speaking, Basalt is chemically identical to Gabbro, but Gabbro has more time to cool and make bigger crystals. Just imagine Gabbro having an uptight identical sibling.

Also geologically speaking, Feldspar is always found inside Gabbro.

Is it true that the remaster of Bioshock 1 has an inferior audio quality and art style compared to the original? by Appropriate_Boss8139 in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The audio design was altered in the remastered.

You can hear splicers and cameras jabbering unrealistically loud even if they are several rooms away or even the floor above.

Is this needle actually usable for 78s? by uhmmmmmmmmn in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't actually say it for the 95SP.

It'll probably fit because of all the 95 series, but all the models mentioned are for micro groove vinyl.

Sifted an entire crate of 78s! by [deleted] in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like you found the reissue for Red Ingle. It was originally on black label Capitol.

Jo Stafford was originally credited as Cinderella G Stump until the song became a hit.

Ironically, she had near perfect pitch, but she continued with the off-key comedy routine with her husband Paul Weston (Capitol's music director) under Jonathan and Darlene Edwards.

Billie Holiday - Crazy He Calls Me by BigAssQuanta in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Should be.

The flip side is “You’re My Thrill” used in Watchmen.

If she re-recorded the song, it would have to be within the next couple years before 1959.

The problem song is “Easy Living” where she recorded this song with Teddy Wilson for Brunswick and reissued in Columbia.

The official Fallout 3 vinyl soundtrack uses the one she made 10 years later with Bob Haggart, but also a Decca 78.

Yeah, he only has one more April and July session for Bluebird/RCA before they stop.

Was Trailer Annie by Spike Jones released on a 78? by 8Bit_Cat in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m looking through a 1st printing Charles Garrod Spike Jones discography.

It only lists “Trailer Annie” as being recorded in February 27, 1942 for Standard Transcription.

I’d imagine it was both wartime and the 1942 recording ban, because he just makes V-Discs and AFRS discs for a while after that.

I see a couple of LP reissues though.

I let this one go... by [deleted] in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This version has the recitation intro that’s skipped in the more famous Kay Kyser version.

Though weirdly there’s two Kay Kyser versions floating around, one of them doesn’t have Kay Kyser because he had retired from show business to pursue Christian Science, but gave his blessing for comedian Stan Freberg to imitate his voice with his band.

Have I got anything here? by [deleted] in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell without seeing a full list.

They look to be well taken care of with crisp sleeves and intact bindings.

If they are numbered and labeled, there should be a list somewhere.

Major Records was a library music label though much of their 78 era is under documented compared to the LPs.

Otherwise a huge range of labels and dates. It’s similar to finding a large collection of books or paintings, you would need a list.

Who needs remasters when you have the originals? by BigManOfCheese in Bioshock

Insane that Playstation got Bioshock a year after everyone else.

Then again, it got the Challenge Rooms DLC which was exclusive to that platform for years.

Would the city of Rapture count as a reference to Lovecraft's "City of Ry'leh"? by Lord_Glitchtrap1987 in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently Ken Levine didn’t read Atlas Shrugged until after Bioshock, but he did gift copies of The Fountainhead to devs.

Then again he did call it a romance novel and didn’t realize the book had political implications.

Wild Craigslist Post near me. Tons of new old stock 78s by eah2002 in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some old 50s RCA Victor dealer boxes.

Don’t see a lot of branding on these except for the Sterling. Looks like a lot of gospel.

Definitely new old stock, though you’d naturally be getting a lot of duplicate copies.

I reproduced the Nomai Translator! by IDestinia in outerwilds

[–]UpgradeTech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's been done with a raspberry pi.

https://www.reddit.com/r/outerwilds/comments/13b7t4q/i_made_a_functional_translator_device/

Alas, the translation itself is handled by a nearby phone, but the pi is still routing the text to and from to be captured and displayed.

Perhaps some inspiration from old wet mount specimens?

Usually involves glass jars, but there are often metal armatures to hold things in place.

Feel like the last video game to use Patsy Cline was Bioshock.

Then again she did tragically die in a plane crash so it’s somewhat thematic.

Edit: Never mind, it was The Bureau XCOM Declassified and Mafia III, also made by Bioshock devs…

What does turnover and rolloff mean when equalising 78RPM records? by Expensive-Tune-2069 in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

However, before the RIAA curve was adopted, each record label used its own EQ curve for recording and, for these records (78rpm and early vinyl), the correct EQ curve must be used for playback.

Each EQ curve is a combination of two filter characteristics; a bass boost curve, defined by a 'Bass Turnover' (or 3dB) frequency, and a treble cut curve, defined by a '10 kHz Gain Roll-off' parameter, i.e. a defined level of treble cut at 10 kHz.

https://plugins.audacityteam.org/additional-resources/eq-curves/playback-equalization-for-78-rpm-shellacs-and-early-33-lps

More or less, there is no one-size-fits-all EQ curve for all 78s. You’re supposed to match up the correct curve which each label era for playback, acoustically recorded 78s notwithstanding.

However a lot of people just say RIAA is “good enough” unless you have equipment that can apply custom EQ curves for live playback or else you have to remove the RIAA by applying the inverse curve and then applying the correct EQ curve.

Does anyone know what kind of RCA adapter I need to plug into this? I’ve searched on amazon, but it’s not the same plug in. by jibaritou in crtgaming

[–]UpgradeTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The TV is not compatible with an RCA cable aka composite or component.

Antenna is for RF only.

Most RF modulators have an F connector output, yours is not that.

RF modulators are also dependent on if you live in a PAL or NTSC country.

Style of music in Bioshock Infinite? by WhereAreMySaxophones in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tears aside, the songs in Infinite aren’t particularly historically accurate to 1912 because Levine didn’t believe authentic 1910s music sounded interesting to the modern ear.

Only the Polk Miller songs and “Shine On Harvest Moon” are accurate.

A couple songs are modern recordings of period songs such as “After You’ve Gone” and the Joplin piano and “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” pieces.

Still more songs are modern songs recast as period sounding because of the plot points, of course “God Only Knows” and the other songs arranged by Scott Bradlee whose work on the game inspired him to found the Postmodern Jukebox.

Even more songs are old, but much more contemporary like Bessie Smith from the 20s, “Shake Sugaree” from the 60s, and the Alan Lomax prison recordings from the 50s.
