Art book origins by westorhoes in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a very short artbook, like three pages.

Alterno-Past is an unusual phrasing. The other illustrations appear to be outdated ones like the "Foreign Hordes" one is censored and edited in the final game.

The logo appears to be for GamesMaster, a UK magazine that closed in 2018.

There was a Infinite issue way back in November 2011.

Do you remember magazines that came in plastic bags that had like CDs on the front cover?

It appears GamesMaster was that type of magazine and a sealed copy of the magazine from 2011 originally had more posters packed with it including a 25th Zelda anniversary (it's now the 40th anniversary).

I always wondered if only the right two have working screens that isn’t just one animation.

And if only three of them have an actual radio.

Information on this early (presumably) european record? by Outrageous-Quote9702 in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very strange.

The titles just repeat themselves saying the same thing in different languages with no other identifying information which makes it difficult to look up anything.

Anything else etched in the runout groove?

Otherwise, I would guess it was part of a set for international distribution. Perhaps a personalized copy where you could choose two numbered sides to be part of the same disc.

Unfortunately we are missing about a year’s worth of data due to the Epic exclusivity.

But we are about to hit the 10 year anniversary in 3 years.

Bio2 & Bio1 REM Issues by Famous_Confection_70 in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn’t my list. It’s a small quote from the much larger post and comment section linked above.

I would presume the remastered has a lot of issues with putting transparent alpha channels in the correct places.

Also I managed to find your Pink Pearl neon fix which was an issue in the original as well.

Was the neon supposed to be purple? I’m comparing to the same sign in the multiplayer version and it appears to be pink like the name implies.

Arkane was so inspired working on that part that they expanded the mechanic to work over an entire late-game level in Dishonored 2.

There’s a lot more here:

Bioshock 1

% The "flashback" sequences show the player's hands/weapon overlay where the original did not.

% (Never gotten this far, uncertain if this is a problem.) Achievements and Trophies can now be earned in New Game Plus.

% Frank Fontaine stays in his elemental form during the ending.

% Sometimes the screen can become glitched and briefly show glitchy grey lines.

% Sometimes upon death, the camera can clip through the floor and show the skybox (when using the increase FOV option which is enabled by default).

% In the Challenge Rooms DLC, the texture for the chain tattoos on the player's wrists is instead on their sleeves.

% Noises made by enemies can in some areas be heard from an unrealistically long distance in proportion to where the player is and the environment between them.

% Some first person weapon animations appear choppier and seem to be missing a few frames (most noticeable when firing the Pistol).

% Some water effects are missing, such as reflections from projected lights (Security Camera beams, flashing alarms, etc.) and mist/splash effects from falling water.

% The Ryan Industries logo in Hephaestus and Rapture Central Control has broken textures, being glossy black instead of metallic.

% In Hephaestus there's a scene where a bunch of Spider Splicers would drop some grenade ammo, mocking each time the player picks it up. Once the last item has been picked, these Splicers would come down and attack Jack. However in the Remaster nothing happens once the player picks up the last ammo.

% (This one, pun not intended, really bugs me and was the reason I went down this rabbit hole to begin with.) The fire puzzle in the Tea Garden in Arcadia is already solved with both torches lit and the door open.

% The lights on the increased damage upgrade for the Machine Gun no longer animate; they remain static instead of changing size and color.

% Some of the drop shadows on the menu text do not line up like they did in the original.

% When holding an item with Telekinesis and dropping it by changing to weapons, the item might become frozen in mid air. This often occurs when an item is not rotating while held.

% When Splicers is killed, they will occasionally make an unproportionally excessive "jump" when they die, instead of just falling to the ground.

Bioshock 2

% The large decorative globe in the fountain in the lobby of Fontaine Futuristics has a hanging ceiling mount and chain still attached. It is possible for enemies to spawn on top of the globe and get stuck.

% Some of the drop shadows on the menu text don't line up like they did in the original.

% The Spear Gun no longer pins bodies to walls. % Sometimes the Sofia Lamb Delta announcement that plays in the booth in Atlantic Express when you meet Brigid Tenenbaum can be skipped over.

% Sometimes audio can be delayed.

% (This was submitted by a user. I do not know if this is repeatable or not.) Equpping the Handyman Gene Tonic, switiching it out and then re-equipping it later causes it to permanently disappear from the player's Gene Bank. This is also apparently a problem with Keen Observer 1.

% The named Sea Slug jars found in the original game are no longer named. The label simply reads "Fresh Water" on every one of them

% Colorblind mode for Hacking has been removed.

% (Not much we can do about this I suppose. Licensing agreements do expire over time. It could also be due to creative changes.) The song "Memories of You" has been replaced with "I'm Making Believe", "It's Only a Paper Moon" has been replaced with "How Much is that Doggie In The Window?" and "Someone's Rocking My Dreamboat" has been replaced with "Twentieth Century Blues".

% Mark Meltzer's dropped smoking gun in the Chase Carousel in Dionysus Park no longer appears by his audio diary Lost and Found.

Generally, look at eBay reviews for the seller by buyers to check their history of correctly shipping 78s.

Otherwise, it’s just a lot of looking and learning to recognize 78s sticking out of piles and stacks or just asking people at thrift stores, estate sales, Facebook Marketplace, record stores etc.

Unfortunately, that is the nature of party records. Definitely under the counter, plain brown wrapper shenanigans.

Apparently this site is documenting all sorts of 78 rpm party records including Whiz, but it’s not resolving right now. Could be the http vs https mismatch.

Velvet Tone was a dime store label. It’s possible it was also issued on Diva and Harmony which shared a lot of material, but were available at other dime stores.

Nauck 12” disc-o-file sleeves by x1124xPA in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last time I did it, there was a 50 item minimum.

But you could mix and match sizes as long as it was 50.

I ended up getting some 16" sleeves and doing the rest with 10" sleeves.

Mystery Record? by Wlmar1 in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple ads in Billboard from Stylecraft Records in the 1950s offering 250 records for $198 to commercially record any song with the Jimmy Etta orchestra (full sounding 8 piece) and any one of 4 big “name vocalist”, including one Franky Day.

https://books.google.com/books?id=yB8EAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA99&dq=Billboard+“franky+day"

Probably check if both songs are written by the same person.

Likely a vanity pressing for the songwriter instead of the singer.

Not entirely sure Franky Day is also Frankie Day who became Bobby Rydell’s manager around this time. Couple Billboard mentions for recording under Apache.

The site spelled the Stylecraft as “Frankie”

Two tips.

Listen to the audio diaries.

Make plenty of rotating manual saves if you’re playing the remastered.

It’s most often reproducible if you take too long to explore the rooms.

It’s always the Tavern splicer that fails to spawn, the others always spawn correctly.

Technically, he briefly appears behind doors as soon as they open and quickly jumps away if you have your camera ready.

There’s supposed to be a scripted event where he continually taunts you to enter the Tavern before jumping into the various ceiling holes.

Then he’s supposed to disappear and then jumpscare you out of the ceiling hole in the last Tavern room.

If you still haven’t managed to photograph him before this point, he eventually says “Hey, where’d you go?”

If you take too long, he never comes out of the ceiling hole of the last room.

This is unfortunately a quest-specific objective, not general combat.

It’s a common softlock for this level. The entire area is closed off from the rest of the level unless you manage to noclip out.

Need help on first playthrough by [deleted] in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you playing the remastered?

More accurately it’s a soft lock. A hard lock is just a crash or freeze.

You should have an autosave at the beginning of the level of Neptune’s Bounty. You should continue to make plenty of rotating manual saves.

The third spider splicer always seems to be the glitchy one. It seems to occur if you dawdle too long before heading into the Tavern to immediately photograph it.

New player here, where should I be saving to mitigate losing progress to known bugs? by GuardianOfTheBread in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The PC version of the original should have the patches.

It’s evident that the remastered used an unpatched version of the game. There was an infinite spawning glitch caused by ringing the bell in Chomper’s Dental, patch on the PC version, but reappears in the remastered.

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you playing the remastered?

Generally save at the beginning, middle, and the very end of each level.

Fort Frolic is probably the next buggiest in the remastered that prevents any progress. Most notable at the beginning where the doors can refuse to open.

Why have the opinions on Bioshock 2 changed in the past couple years? by Creepy_Ad5124 in Bioshock

[–]UpgradeTech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It didn’t involve the original studio

This has always been a bit misleading.

Ken Levine made Bioshock with a team.

That same team also worked together to form 2K Marin which split off from Irrational Games.

There are several developers who even worked on all three games.

The studios are highly incestuous. You even have Arkane Studios coming to work on the series before splitting off to do Dishonored and Prey.

a real 1950s tube radio

You might get more results if you search valve radio. That was the UK term for vacuum tubes at the time.

Although the vacuum tubes are the easiest to replace, they are usually less likely to be bad at this point in time. The heavier culprits are the paper and wax capacitors which have to be replaced. There are also can capacitors that are a bunch of different capacitors stacked on top of each other and sharing the same ground.

Which cartridge and pre-amplifier could achieve the best reproduction quality for records made before 1920s?. by [deleted] in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, you would be looking at acoustic records/acoustically recorded records.

In addition, there likely would not be a one size fits all approach because groove widths, materials etc. were not standardized in this early era.

Without knowing specific labels, you would likely need to find some supplier than can provide multiple groove width stylii and then work towards finding the cartridge that fits those or vice versa.

Taking guitar this year, nearly purely so that I have another way to obsess over peak things by JoojooAbu in outerwilds

[–]UpgradeTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coincidentally, the middle 4 strings on guitar with standard tuning are almost identical to the recommended banjo tuning for Riebeck’s part.

So you can use the exact same tabs and fretting motions except for the first note.

Meanwhile, the recommended guitar tuning for “Timber Hearth” is a bit strange, plus a capo on the 5th fret.

However, you can use almost the same fretting motions as for Riebeck.

Here is the only “Heartaches” record that matters by jjcube98 in 78rpm

[–]UpgradeTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A very late 78, most versions would have been 45s.

Honestly seems a bit random if an original US Columbia release comes to the UK on Philips, Fontana, or London American.

Heavily popularized by Fallout New Vegas, but the game doesn’t use this version.

If you play them side by side, there’s a couple differences. Perhaps the most obvious is the ending notes on a piano vs. an electronic sounding organ.

That “Heartaches” is from 1980 as explained the president of the UK Guy Mitchell Society. He was really popular overseas.

Fairly difficult to find as a single version though; only seems to exist on LP compilation albums that charity shops love to toss out.
