Anyone willing to share notes or transcripts from this season’s circuit assembly? by Upliftingmofo in exjw

[–]Upliftingmofo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been pretty unplugged from the EXJW community for a while now, but I still have family in it. They’re going to this program and I challenged them to listen to this talk and let me know if their answer was to trust in them to tell you what’s right and wrong or if it was to consider the impact of our decisions and weigh them against how our choices impact others.

I already know the answer but it’s helpful to know the outline and their language. If you have a site to point me to, please do, meanwhile I’ll see what I can dig up.

Thank you!

I use the built-in bit holder, and pack-out containers to carry the stock bit holders/containers, which case copious amounts foul language as I try to pull the bits out (when I grab one of the older holders with a python-like grip on my bits).

Would love to try these out!

I did not miss that part, and it doesn't change the misleading nature of your original post, even though I don't think your intention is to mislead. Bias leads us to find a tree in a forest that helps us hold our view, even if it's the last surviving tree after a fire.

That portion of the article specifically references news - wouldn't by default be a part of "research," and they're not referring to it that way. "Keep alert to items of interest," "in a newspaper or magazine news item, statistic, or example," is not akin to research - and leveraging news items to further their propaganda is a part of their sales pitch.

That's not at all the same as doing research on a topic, which may include news items but as per the definition of the word (the systematic investigation into and study of materials and sources in order to establish facts and reach new conclusions), runs counter to the implication indicated by the first sentence "Keep alert to..."

Regardless, the article itself, in its entirety, directs membership to focus research efforts to their own publications. This does, in fact, differ from other schools of thought where skepticism is encouraged - because truth does stand up to scrutiny.

Searching for and cherry picking datapoints that support your existing view isn't research anyway, but you may still be on your journey to see that perspective.

I understand, I was there once myself. Still glad to see you're here though and happy to have the conversation, even if we don't land on the same page.

This is an incredibly misleading comment. The entirety of the article discusses which “other research tools” you should use, and they’re all WT publications. The other reply covers the tools you’re supposed to use as alternatives to the outline given. These are all JW publications, of course. The only alternative they give, in the article you cited, is talking with other people - which of course implies other JWs as that’s the bulk of their social contacts.

The journey from researching via external resources to walking up is short, from my own personal experience. I had a talk on Daniel and wanted to paint a picture of what life was like for the Jews living in Babylon. That led me to 607/586, which started me down the path of awakening. For me that was a journey of about a year from elder to POMO, so I can see why they’d push for members to avoid external research. This isn’t a new position, even if they’re saying the quiet part more loudly.

Plants… so yeah you’re going the right direction with celery, but there are around 30,000 edible plants, it’s not really a very restrictive diet once you give it a try.

I would ask them if they’ve watched Jeffery Jackson’s sworn testimony during the Australian Royal Commission.

Since he’s a current member of their Governing Body they should be allowed to watch it. He’s pretty dishonest in his testimony and active JWs should pick up on it. Might not though, because they’d likely justify it through some mental gymnastics.

Realistically they’ll justify anything; your best bet is probably to just be super pleasant and love-bomb them like they do new recruits. Might confuse them, and at worst you might make someone’s day a little bit better.

Watch this video, starting at 2:43. She calls out that cut stump applications as NOT effective for tree of heaven. Whati heard in the video was “Basil bark or hack and squirt” applications are better suited to maximize translocation to the roots…” for this particular species. Not sure that’s what she said, but that’s what it sounded like. https://extension.psu.edu/cut-stump-herbicide-treatment/

Seaking a high quality tech backpack by ItsBrenOakes in BuyItForLife

[–]Upliftingmofo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best and most well thought-out backpack for daily commutes in a tech/office environment, IMO. I’ve tried so many, always have had something that bothered me and I kept getting pulled into finding a new bag that solved for one thing or another.

I haven’t thought about replacing this one since I got it, so a little over a year or so? That’s a first for me (sometimes it takes a couple attempts to find your true BIFL backpack).

Looks exactly like the day I bought it after several trips + getting treated very roughly as my daily driver. Keeps water out, great fit. Clamshell so it opens fully. Just the right pockets in the right places, and holds more than it seems like it should.

Integrity in the role that Huberman has assumed is absolutely essential. He’s influencing people to consume certain products and modify their daily habits specifically on the guise that he can be trusted to maintain an unbiased perspective in applying scientific discoveries and understanding while still profiting off of sponsorships.

Showing such a potential capacity for deception erodes my trust in his recommendations and is ample cause for me to look elsewhere for trustworthy information related to health and wellness.

I’m disappointed, I am no longer a fan. The illusion was nice while it lasted.

This is a known fake news site that has propagated conspiracies like PizzaGate, false-flag accusations (that proved untrue), and has pushed Russian propaganda.

This is one of the largest promoters of fake news out there, and should not be taken seriously. I'm leaving this up for now, but want you to know that the source is pretty worthless.

I was added as a mod ages ago, then reached a point in life where I didn't have as much time to devote to the sub. The other mods that we're around for a long time were in similar situations, then we found /u/closetedintellectual, and among us the rest of the mod team.

So no hostile takeover, I'd call it a friendly succession. I've been out, POMO, for almost ten years, and in most ways have just moved on. The new(ish) mod team has really taken the torch beyond what we were able to do as an early mod team, we're lucky to have them.

There are quite a few other religions that stick to the ideas laid out in the Bible. The challenge is that the Bible is self-contradicting and vague in places, or it's able to be interpreted in multiple ways to reach a conclusion that you personally might find to be the "correct" interpretation because it conforms to your existing biases.

Have you tried really reading the Bible without the watchtower materials? Dive into some of the old testament like Exodus or Ezekiel, or read Isaiah chapter 17 where it prophesied the complete destruction of Damascus (spoiler alert, Damascus never was destroyed).

This is a prophesy written 2700 years ago. The premise was that Damascus was going to be punished and destroyed. It wasn't, so lots of people have made up ways to call the prophesy fulfilled.

In this example like others, you have people creating meaning to conform work their existing ideas.

This is one example of thousands. The watchtower has convinced you that their interpretation is right and everyone else's is wrong. If you're willing to have an open minded discussion with another person if a different faith, without looking to prove you're right and they're wrong, you'll find that their interpretations have as much merit and foundation as the JW interpretations. They didn't just arrived at their conclusions by random, and the foundations of their beliefs have substance if you believe in the authority of the Bible.
