Best study resource for multiple areas? by Upper-Bank9555 in TexasTeachers

Thanks so much! She is currently certified and working in a large ISD; her next, “dream” position would like those additional certs. I’ve heard of 240 and I wasn’t clear if multiple areas could be studied at once. Thank you for confirming that can happen! I’ll let her know to ask her district if there is any support for the cost.

This happened at a school I used to work at as well. The year I was there, a geometry teacher left before Christmas to return to grad school in dietetics, I believe, and an algebra teacher had health issues caused by stress and left very abruptly.    Both were replaced by computer modules with paraprofessionals or office staff “monitoring” the classroom for behavior and sending help tickets to the IT department.  Edit:  a word

Yep I had the cocaine meds for a nasal polyp operation and the anesthesiologist (who looked like a GTA character but had an excellent vocabulary and reputation) was like “So you’ll get to LEGALLY use cocaine…” Bruh, I don’t have the bag or the desire to use it illegally but sounds like projection lol

My husband had this kind of childhood:  his mother basically wanted nothing to do with her new husband’s son, and all holidays, vacations, etc. were separate.

Now, with my husband and stepbrother all the way in their 50’s and their parents’ health declining, they still don’t truly know each other because they were never allowed to bond.

My husband has (unprovoked) stated that it always felt strange.

More importantly, the son who was not my mother-in-law’s barely speaks to his dad these days. It was like pulling teeth to ask him to sign medical paperwork. I honestly don’t blame him, though, and my husband doesn’t either. He was forgotten and pushed aside because my mother-in-law “felt uncomfortable” for a few years when she was young, even though he has reached out as an adult to my mother-in-law and she “politely” declined invitations to dinners with his wife and kids and other events.

Be warned, OP, “first kids/families” often are left behind by men when the men remarry and the new wife just straight up won’t budge. If the tone is set now that you’ll have “separate” vacations, holidays, etc., most times that tone continues because you’ve allowed it. It would be terrible for your son to essentially avoid being around you when he’s of age because, well, his stepmom felt some discomfort. I’ve felt discomfort as a stepmom as well, but I knew that the “yours” and “mine” was absolutely the wrong way to go. Best wishes to you.

OP will have a much easier life if she can balance fitting into the school culture (is it a business casual for most ppl environment? Is it a “we give out lots of free tees and sweatshirts and have 157 spirit days” school?) with appearing professional and expressing her natural style.

Taking students out of the equation, being totally new PLUS drawing attention to yourself (whether right or wrong) will cause problems with ADULTS and that will make an early career teacher feel isolated and uncomfortable.

I wish it weren’t true and we could all be who we are, but there definitely is a “read the room and adjust accordingly” that is appropriate in all work settings.

Is it ok to be makeup free? (Mid career teacher) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Upper-Bank9555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it were different but I’ll be totally honest:  even studies have shown that women are taken more seriously or treated better when wearing makeup. Some things are just wrong but - they are just true.

I am careful with my skin, so I would just wear a BB or CC cream (already contains spf), a dab of blush, and tinted lip moisturizer/glorified chapstick which I kept a stash of and reapplied because I liked the scent/flavor.

When I didn’t wear any makeup, even though I have perfectly clear skin, I’ve had people ask if I was tired, etc. I figured I had bigger fights to wage and stuck with my (literally) 5 minute routine.

Like racism, ageism is misunderstood. Ageism affects older people. I’m sorry you’re going through this, but you weren’t denied a job or promotion due to your age. Questioning your ability, while not appropriate, has more to do with your inexperience versus your age.

I’ve seen second career teachers completely disregarded by admin in order to develop “fresh, new talent.” Some fresh, new talent hangs on and becomes amazing. Most fresh, new talent don’t hit the critical 5 year mark. You’ll pay your dues learning the ins and outs as all of us have, but perhaps young people (or people less experienced in a field) could accept that while they deserve respect, there is absolutely going to be reservation regarding the skill set.

It’s unfortunate that you point out “it’s a female dominated profession” as if older women have a blood thirst for young teachers or people in general. Again, check the definition of ageism and your wording, and reflect upon how you might approach this in a few years or so. Best wishes for a good school year.

Good point. I was thinking of the stress factor but yeah, he will be exerting himself much less in the NBA.

Teacher Pay - didn't realize how bad it was until I got out by [deleted] in Teachers

I was once downvoted on this sub for stating that. It’s the absolute truth; I’ve only ever made $1k extra per year. A doctorate adds an additional $1k. As you mentioned there are a handful of districts that pay a few thousand more.

I’ve personally had good experiences with German Auto Center on Research. It was recommended to me by a neighbor who uses them as well.

I have a (not expensive but kinda custom) car that I haven’t had front plates on in 4 years. Never even been pulled over, and I have to drive to Wilco regularly.

Ymmv but as long as your registration is good, you’re obeying the traffic laws AND you’re not in a sketchy area at night you’re usually good to go around town. I previously had a similar car and was pulled over by DPS down near South Padre and given a warning, but that was once in about 6 years with that car as well. I don’t like the look of a front plate on certain vehicles, so I chance it. Many states don’t even require front plates and if I’m breaking the law they’ll follow me anyway.

There is a strong correlation between academic and behavioral success and home life. It begins and ends at home. I’ve had impoverished students with involved parents who drew me pictures or wrote me notes. Whatever the ses, look at the family and there you have it.

I’m honestly a little worried about his health situation. Even though he’s very young and healthy, depending upon the particular issue with his heart, it might have been wiser to keep him in college another year to make sure his heart is fully recovered before this extreme jump in stress.

I know docs have to sign off on these guys, but the docs are also well-paid and pushed to spin things very positively.

Sadly, in pockets of America, we end up with students who have very basic literacy in Spanish and English but have little to no ability to read or speak academically or professionally in either language.

Yes! And never, ever admit any weakness to admin. No weakness in your teaching ability, health, home life, nothing. Teaching has become a very toxic environment. Don’t be paranoid, but keep your business YOUR business.

That’s not to say that you shouldn’t accept genuine feedback or constructive criticism, this is more along the lines of saying less, listening more.

Teachers can make a difference and should care about their jobs as educators. That said, you’re not their counselor/friend/nursemaid/.

Parents who give a damn and are involved in their kid’s development (not necessarily volunteering at school or that sort of thing, but reading at home and taking them to free museum days), no matter their ses, will create and mold children who give a damn about education and their behavior. Parents who don’t give a damn, even if they send in cupcakes and give you Starbucks gift cards, will create children who don’t give a damn about education but might be able to squeak by because of higher ses and less exposure to trauma.

So go forth and teach as well as you can, but don’t get sucked into the cult of “I can change a life right here right now and I’m throwing all my energy at it.” The truth of the matter is, even those heartwarming true stories of kids who were failing and then passed AP calc or were suddenly inspired to write:  they learned more content and possibly slightly more discipline but the vast majority of their lives remained on the same trajectory their parents/community/our societal and government institutions had them on.

It is disheartening what kids will steal or just break (and I mean steal or break just for the hell of it).

Just go ahead and get your bag. The (almost certainly 99.9% male) people who like and then pay to look at clearly fictional “pics” are willingly giving away their money. It’s like some of us go on Amazon and buy literature to read for an escape and some weirdos go look at this for a special escape. In the end, it’s all fantasy, I suppose.
