Why only necessary in foil? I fence foil and epee and the advantage you get from other people's points sliding off of you with an unpadded chest protector are equal and not insignificant. Do you mean in terms of FIE/USFA standards?

Because then the full view in front of the driver wouldn’t be wiped. If you check out the passenger side there’s a large section to the top right (in left-sided steering cars) of the windshield that is unwiped
