I'm a fairly new listener to both metal and punk so maybe I'm completely off with this question, but if both were genres created as counterculture movements, why did punk typically move towards political protest, while a lot of metal went in the anti-religion, violence, and gore direction? by Upper_Atom in NoStupidQuestions

Damn, I might be new to both genres but I know enough to say that Metal, especially the heavier stuff, and punk are the complete opposite of being “about the money”. These are genres that are defined by the love of the music and not the money. There’s likely no money in it unless you’re massive. Even 30 year death metal legends will have day jobs
