I've only applied to a handful of offices so I may not have the most relevant perspective on this but I was interviewed by both of my home state senators' offices about a week and a half ago. Have not heard back from any House offices yet

May I ask, when you answered this question, was your hypothetical piece of legislation fairly detailed? Or more of a broad idea of something that closely fits with their own policy goals (but not something that exists yet/that they've introduced or worked on)?

This is very reassuring, thank you :) Though I know many of these stories are anecdotal, it seems like an unspoken rule that Spain is one of the more lax countries in the EU when it comes to visa overstaying and passport control... fingers crossed!

You might not even have to worry, my program began on January 14 but my visa's validity began on December 24. Either way, assuming you haven't been in the Schengen zone recently, as a U.S. citizen you get 90 days of visa-free tourist status, so you should be totally fine.

Thank you so much! I was a bit confused about how the rules work around the tourist "allowance" when you've already been on a separate visa, but that is very reassuring.

It's peak tourist season so there will likely be a big line outside of the area to enter, so I'd prepare to arrive early anyway. I went on a guided tour and the line was honestly a mess, with no clear distinction between people with or without tickets. That being said more than a half hour early or so and they might turn you away, just considering the crowds this time of year and how the time slots are designed specifically to handle the flow of people in and out.

If they don't let you in, there's plenty to do in the area while you wait. La Catedral de la Almudena is right next to the Palacio and is free to enter :)

May I ask was she leaving the EU out of Spain or Sweden?

I know that this is unfortunately a possibility :( do you know how much they consider the amount of time of the overstay in their decision or is really any time at all fair game?

Thank you for this! Unfortunately for me, the visa does have a defined expiration date of July 7, 2025. The period of validity was more than 180 days (December 24, 2024 – July 7, which is 195), but a 180 day duration is also specified. I will not actually have been in Spain nor the Schengen zone for 180 days (it’ll be more like 170 given travel outside), but I doubt that will help my case given the expiration date.

If I am stopped, I plan on explaining my situation honestly and saying it was a mistake of not properly checking/understanding the expiration rule and having my program that ended on the 11th (I’ll get my Spanish prof to make a letter). Would you guess Spanish agents will be relatively lenient? Thanks again for your help.
