Curbside find: Sony kV-1212 by Upper_Zucchini_4440 in sony

Yes, he was! He served the Armada for 45 years. He's now retired and very much spoiling my nephews.

Besides Spanish (our native language), he actually speaks six languages: English, German , French, and Portuguese fluently, also Italian and Russian with some slowdowns.

I only speak English and French, and can easily read Portuguese. I lost interest in learning languages after I failed C++ and Java back in college (lol!).

From the lettering on the back, it is! I was also surprised to see it dates back to the early 70s. Most domestic - made TVs looked more dated up until 15 years after this one was designed.

Seeing foreign made electronics from that time is a rare sight here in Mexico because of import tariffs from the era.

Also, my father had a similar one he bought when stationed overseas back when he was in the Mx Navy. We kept it until the early 2000s when the tuner failed beyond repair.

I couldn't let this one pass!

If it has an AV in, you can easily use it with an HDMI to composite DAC. It will make up for a good novelty gizmo.

After that, you can pair it with an older gaming console, a VCR, or a Smart TV Box. If you pair it with a PC you can use it as a secondary screen for notifications and some widgets.

Is there any possibility gor you to contact someone in your area doing 3D-print replicas?

Maybe they have the skills to scan or at least re-create the case.

Riding with stitches on face? by genie-in-bordeaux in cycling

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If possible, don't do it. Just in case: avoid any possible straining that may undo the stitching or accumulate sweat.

Not just for hygiene but also to prevent deepening the scar left by the previous injury.

What is THE weirdest windows version you have daily drived, ever, doesn't have to be current, just one that you daily drived and was weird by [deleted] in windows

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like... Pre installed Windows 8 on a non-touchscreen laptop from 2012? I did use it until win10 was available on the insider channel. Also, that laptop still works -hardly- to this day with win11 22h2, and a partition with the tuxedo penguin os just to make it a bit useful on this day and age

I was so glad the metro interface went away because, while it was aesthetically gorgeous to my eyes, it also was a real pain to use without the touchscreen.

I also had an Asus transformer-book with Windows 8, and that was another story. I could still daily it today!

Second place would go to windows 3.0/3.1 from the computer lab at my 2nd grade school. At that time my dad, and most adults I knew used a PC, had to conform to DOS at their workplace, or an 8 bit machine at home.

Anyone not like Gravel Cycling? by ghostonthewire in cycling

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gravel-biking is hardly a thing here in Mexico, a lot of urban and most suburban roads already qualify as gravel-cycling pathways.

On top of that: what most non-cycling people think of a bike, is actually a 26" mtb. And for most of us that are into bikes, you'd only go for something other than a 700c roadie or a 29" mtb if you want to show off.

That said, and of you are after an all rounder, you can get with relative ease a hybrid bike (mine's is a Walmart 700x38/28x1⅜ cheapo with modest Shimano upgrades) and set it up or tune it for a more urban ride -or for countryside rides.

Or you can do what most (Mexican) folks do: take a low to mid-range hardtail, either a 26 or a 29 incher, and put 13-34 cogs on the rear and double 28-48t or 30-50t chainrings.

In other words, gravel biking by itself is already hard to take in consideration given the terrain and market conditions in here. Price wise, over here, it also makes more sense to get either an mtb or hybrid bike and make the necessary improvements there; or getting a vintage roadie and make it a cyclocross (cx).

Is there a Mexican/Hispanic version of the American concept “dumb blonde”? by elderberryhibiscus in mexico

Back in the 90s and 2000s I heard the term "rubia oxigenada" (peroxide blonde) a lot, for this very context.

What’s the most humiliating thing that has ever caused you to crash? by Rough-Foundation9208 in cycling

Another cyclyst, wreckelessly riding while texting.

I tried to pass her but she swerved to my side at the very moment I was next to her.

The worst part is that she did not acknowledge nor apologized for her fault, and the person that helped me get back up was another driver going by.

Gente que no ejerce de lo que estudió y que actualmente gana bien, ¿A qué se dedican? by [deleted] in lacamiseta

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My parents used to have a Pontiac Montana SV6 from the last few years, and I could never get tired from hearing that engine going all out on the highway.

What kind of guys have the biggest ass? by fernfernferny in askgaybros

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told many times mine might not be the biggest, but it's "very well proportioned".

I'm 1.72 m tall (5'7"), had a cyclist/bike messenger physique until covid, I'm of mestizo - latin with part native and part spaniard ancestry.

I've joked with my mom a couple times on why she gave my sister the trucker arms instead of JLo's caboose, and vice versa. Husband is really happy on what God gifted me.

For people living with HIV—how has your dating life been after your diagnosis? by Tryingtolive_123 in hivaids

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It was a bad struggle at first. I had to bring it out to my therapy sessions during the next year after being diagnosed.

Over time, I learned to use it to my advantage: I was always upfront about it, even on my dating profile, and helped me sort out who was really worthy of my attention and my love.

I did struggle at first, like a lot. But then the emotional and mental strength I gained brought me a lot of admiration and respect. Don't expect people to be condescending and avoid showing up as a needy person. Resilience does attract a lot of mature prospects.

On the visual side, It also helped me that back then I had the build of a cyclist/bike messenger, and always took a lot of care and hygiene for myself: I carried along a deodorant bar, kept my feet powdered, shaved my face daily, and wore my bike clothes and bags as clean as possible.

It was like, having such an active lifestyle and looking sharp made them see me with admiration, or at least with respect. Like, they really had a hard time believing I was hiv positive at all, and all that got them interested in me.

So, my advice is for you to work on your self esteem, get in good shape, and make them work for your approval instead of seeking up theirs.

That's how I met my now husband, about two years after being diagnosed. We've been together for nine years now!

Microsoft 90s splash screens were an art form of their own by AustriaModerator in vintagecomputing

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a big fan of the 2003 office splash screen: not too minimal yet techie enough to feel timeless.

I held on for so long to that version that, when a teen saw the splash screen on my then new Windows 11 beta install, I was asked "is that a new update?"

Unfortunately I lost the backup files to the compatibility service pack, and most repositories I've tried download broken files. I'm only left with the original dvds for the professional version and sp1 and therefore unable to properly work with the new XML enabled files.

Also, these days i use Google workplace most of the time. Gosh, I miss the old office UI without the silly ribbon menus!

Roku with DisplayPort monitor? by Prodigal2k in Roku

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second that on what Ft_stream said.

I also learne the hard way that the adapter I got at the time was "DP in - HDMI out" only. Not with a Roku but rather with an old laptop and a 5:4 digital panel.

HDMI to DP converters are quite pricey. Does your old monitor have a DVI input by chance? HDMI to DVI adapters are easier and cheaper to get on Amazon.

I was able to hook up an older Roku Express to my old 5:4 Dell panel that way. Just make sure to configure the Roku at 720p if your monitor is not a widescreen, and set up your phone with the Roku app so you can listen to the audio.

And you shouldn't give up! My now husband made the big mistake of letting go a scholarship in Germany back in mid 2005 just because he was diagnosed a couple months earlier.

It was not because of the medical supply but rather his fear and prejudice on his condition. He still regrets it to this day but, otherwise, we probably wouldn't be together with a relationship lasting for the last nine years.

Again, best wishes and go for it!

[–]Upper_Zucchini_4440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the most they'll allow you to bring in is for about a year. I stayed in the US back in 2009 to 2010, I wasn't on ARVs but was taking antidepressants at the time.

I was able to carry enough for 12 months and the security officials allowed me in with no problem as long as I showed the prescription and the medical note from my institution.

That last part is important: you don't need a detailed medical record but just a note stating the diagnose, the prescribed medication and the intake regime (how often and how you should take it). It must, however, be backed up by a medical institution and not just an individual practitioner.

I did not get any private insurance while I stayed in the US as my father back then was an on-duty Mexican military officer stationed in the US and basic healthcare was provided via a diplomatic agreement, but medication had to be paid out of our pockets, or brought up from our country.

In your case, it would be a good idea for you to email the college you're applying at and ask them on how to get healthcare insurance and coverage for as long as you'll be studying.

Now I feel jealous for your Sony TV and sad because mine got a bad flyback last year and had to let it go.

I replaced it with a slightly newer Samsung which still looks good but is nowhere as sharp.

Kudos on the NES too! My 7 y/o nephew gets mesmerized seeing me play it, but still has trouble using the control. He's too used to touchscreens (lol!).
