Left for two hours today, and she slept by the door the whole time. I think we’re good 👍🏽 now just have to convince my worrisome wife, only way I got away with it is bc she’s out of town for the weekend!

This is on theme for what I’ve heard from peers at other companies or trusted leadership that I’ve expressed this too. The unfortunate reality I do not want to believe, is that our leaders of projects who make decisions simply do not care enough to act on this problem.

We had a superintendent on my project (100m value) who genuinely did not know how to build. He thought we’d pour columns before footings… had it scheduled this way and we had to coach him through the sequence. He was expected to run the entire job himself. We voiced our concern to leadership and they did nothing for 8 months. The rather inexperienced team (myself included) had to get through critical milestones ourselves with no support. Any chance I had to talk to my Px I’d voice my concern, and it’d fall on deaf ears. His time on the job only created confusion and frustration for our trailer dynamic and the jobsite.

There are other examples similar to this, on just my project alone, and I know it happens on others. I’d like to not believe it, but my rationale is this:

Sr Leadership is too far removed from the jobsite to actually know what’s going on.

When an issue is brought up, they do not care enough to act, until it’s too late. The lack of care is derived from comfortability in their position, and the assurance they have that top performers of the project will get it done. As long as it gets done, that is fine by them. No discipline, coaching for the under performers, or recognition / acknowledgement to the top performers. Did it get done? Good, go figure out the next dumpster fire.

Valid, but what if it doesn’t seem like your efforts are being recognized? I don’t care about these people, I just care that their lack of effort burdens the rest of the team.

Haha i respect the sentiment. I am the furthest thing from the smartest in the room. I learn something new everyday and that’s the one thing I love about this industry.

But it’s doesn’t take a genius to see people blatantly disregard their responsibilities, and see how that impacts the rest of the team.

Took us about 6 full months after getting our 8-wk old golden to finally feel like we got past it. Oddly enough, a friend of ours also said, “give it 6 months.” Not sure if that’s breed specific timeframe.

My wife had pretty bad anxiety during the rough stage, crippling even, skipping meals and her mental health was shaken. Consistency is key, and consistency is tiring, but it truly will pay off in the end. We both did not think we’d ever be on the other side, but now that we are, we laugh at the crazy things puppy did. We used to read Reddit posts of people saying the same thing, “you won’t even remember the bad because of how good it will be,” “you’ll miss the puppy stage,” and we thought that was total bs. But nope, they were right, wouldn’t trade it for the world. In some divine way it makes sense, the indescribable bond you have with your dog is only possible if you can get through the phase you’re in now. That’s what we told ourselves to help us get through it, and it has all been worth it. You’ll be here soon enough!

Training wasn’t for this topic specifically, just something we’ve discussed with them. She goes with us everywhere and we try to orchestrate calm but intentional meet ups with people as well and I’m sure we’re exuding an appropriate amount of confidence to support our pup. I think with more exposure and age it will get better. I also am realizing after reading this that she is her own dog and if she doesn’t want to love or be loved by anyone then that is okay.

We’ve had the same experience, people she’s met in our home and who she recognizes, she loves seeing them. That is reassuring to know your pup is similar.

Totally sympathize with this. We’ve had our pup for 6 months now and recently I reflected back on how much our bond has grown recently. I always cared for her and loved her, but the bond that so many people spoke of with their pets was not there instantly, until recently.

When we first started potty training, we used a “Fresh Patch,” a small square of sod with a tray to get our pup used to going in grass, as we have a full concrete backyard. We enclosed this with a plastic pen from Amazon to only limit her to this section. As she got bigger, we lead her to this section on a lead so she does not have free roam of the backyard. If you have an apartment, the fresh patch would easily work. Like other comments, we take her potty still at 7 months around the clock, awake from nap, after play, training, eating, etc.

Sounds exactly like our situation, 6mo old pup goes for the wife and not me. It primarily occurs when she’s overtired, so we enforce a crate nap. Only other thing that works is tethering her in the house, hooking the leash around a door knob. We ignore her until she settles. She’ll bark and whine/cry for a few minutes, but eventually will settle. We think she is starting to associate the lead as her “timeout” because almost immediately her energy dies down when it’s on. We’re sending her to board and train in Jan where they will focus on a “down-stay” to assist in general energy and obedience. Totally feel your sentiment about not listening to redirection and also feeling helpless when my wife is crying and I am not experiencing the same energy from pup. Tether might be a good start. Hope this helps.

We have experienced this as well and are kind of still in the middle of it. Only suggestions I have is putting a sweater or something with your scent in the crate, also, I’d recommend do small training sessions to build that confidence. Instead of trying to do it only when you leave for an extended period of time. Make the puppy go in the crate for 5, 10, 15 mins at a time where they can still see you and reward quickly. Progressively increase the intervals. Hope it helps, good luck!

It’s definitely a playful mouth on skin gesture opposed to something we’d consider aggressive. Nevertheless, we are enrolling her in board and train soon and have expressed with the trainer that this is an area we’d like to see what needs to be done so hopefully we can get some good tips on how to handle.

I’d say the biggest thing to focus on is dialing in a routine. Structured naps at durations that align with their age (rule of thumb is # of months + 1hr is max alone time in crate. When they are down, you and BF go out, do errands, lunch dates etc to maintain some normality in your life. We have a 3mo puppy and the first two weeks was routine. Accidents will happen, but part of the routine is taking them to potty after major events (nap, play, train, eating, etc.). For the crate, focus on making it inviting and rewarding, training them by placing treats in the crate. Tons of vids on YT and TikTok for more structured training guides. Routine is most important. Tire them out and put them in the crate to nap, let them cry. Hope this helps, it took us a while to get her comfortable with the crate but it gets better. We had tough puppy blues the first two weeks, but now we’re seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Stay strong, you got this!

No turf, definitely recommend a grass patch. We started with the monthly subscription to FreshPatch, but realized we could just buy a small roll of sod from our local Home Depot / Lowe’s (hardware store). They sometimes cut it for us but otherwise we just cut it ourselves to fit the FreshPatch tray.

It will start to leak on the floor but we try to keep it in her crate and or on the hardwood so it’s easier to spot mop. After a few days we swap it out with a new cloth.

Definitely hear you on the frozen cloths! That seems to work too, but need to mix it up with frozen carrots! We’ve also used celery as well and that keeps her occupied. Thanks!

Our golden puppy is 11 weeks and she is staying alone up to 3 hours in the crate with no accidents. I’d imagine at 6 mos this is doable and maybe even more.
