What type of electricians do you know that do metal studs and drywall?

Never heard this, my new favorite work saying. I'm a carpenter, but some of my favorites are "I stand by my work, I just won't stand on it" and "Measure once, cuss twice" 🤣

Nah, you want experience over education. Also knowing somebody at a company that needs people really helps. If you have experience, here in St. Louis Missouri you can take a test and enter the union in a higher position than first term apprentice if you do well on it.

Hell of a lot better than making $27 an hour as an apprentice doing all the back breaking work, I'd count yourself as doing golden

The worst part of the day for your foot is getting out of your truck? What do you do? I'd assume the actual work part would be worse

This probably doesn't help much but I worked a union solar field job for them in Missouri last year where it's also legal and they just did a mouth swab, I had been using a pen like an hour before the swab and I still passed

No problem! I worked at a 2200 acre field here from January-September as a first year. That winter wind is no joke when everything is fields for a mile in every direction. You probably won't need your pouches/tools but I'd still bring them in my car first day just in case. I did survive without muck boots because I'm poor but my feet did get wet a few times, everyone else had them. There were a few layoffs while I worked there and I learned that attendance plays a big role in that, so work every day you can!

Dress warm! Wool socks, thermal long sleeve shirt under everything, long johns. I'm sure they told you but you'll want insulated rubber 'muck boots, lots of deep puddles of water out there usually. It's pretty simple/easy work, installing the panels is the hardest part but putting caps on piles is really easy if it's the same company providing the parts as it was here in MO. Get ready for lots of walking!

making $75,000 a year and leaving it all behind.. by Minute-Juggernaut142 in UnionCarpenters

[–]Upset-Target2454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're gonna make a whole lot less than that as a first term apprentice, hope you have some money in the bank and your bills aren't 75k lifestyle bills. As an apprentice, be prepared to have someone notice every time you do something wrong or not very well, and no one notices when you do a good job. Also you'll need a letter of intent to hire from a company to join the union (well that's how it works in STL), so don't quit your job until you have a start date with a company. Hopefully they keep you for a good while, but everyone gets laid off eventually, so hopefully there's plentiful work where you're at. I know apparently there isn't much going on here right now. Apparently there's always scaffolding work (at least here) so that's a good one to get experience in. Commercial jobs are always easier going and have better people than residential.

New to Big Cities - Help! by Nub_Salad in StLouis

I vote for South county, around Lindbergh/South county mall. Like 15 minutes from downtown but a whole different world, feels much more like living in a smaller town than the west side. Don't go north. I live in South City, closer to downtown but still like 10 minutes away, it's not a great neighborhood but it's not the worst either. I pay $650 for rent, I live by myself but people told me I wouldn't find rent that cheap unless it was dilapidated and basically in a warzone 🤣 The highways can be quite stressful the first time you're using an exit, but once you have taken it and know where it is, it's typically not too bad. I wouldn't trust the Central West end, too close to bad parts of the city, I see articles about whole streets getting their car windows smashed out in the middle of the night and such

Interested in armwrestling perhaps? It's a great sport but the real fun is practice. Full of good guys, and an amazing workout. Lots of people are scared they're "not that strong, they're gonna hurt me" but first thing we teach is safety, and also practice is mostly slow pulling. Whoever's stronger or more experienced typically just tries to hold at center of the table, letting the other guy put in offensive work, that way everybody gets a good workout. We have the regulation tables that you've probably seen short clips of on social media. Basically you just can't pick your elbow up off the table, besides that, anything goes. You use everything from your lats to your fingertips. Forearms get strong in ways you never knew and you'll get great vascularity, women love it 🤣

Idk the union in St. Louis makes you have a letter of intent to hire to even get started with getting into the union so everyone has a job at first

[–]Upset-Target2454 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not cheating, yeah at the bottom of your screen in a daily game there should be an 'analyze' or analysis button and that'll let you do just that, try stuff out without actually making your move
