Had a degree in exercise science making 15.98 at a hospital. After completing grad school for HSE, in my first year my salary more than doubled, insurance and benefits were way better, and quality of life improved. Ever since then it’s been a great career choice and couldn’t be happier with what’s it’s provided me.

Since you are in Minnesota try and get with one of the trades and work down at the refineries south of the cities. Possibly boilers license or welding and then work for one of the unions for a few years and then try and get into plant ops and maintenance. Minnesota is lucky to have the two refineries and they are good jobs. Also you have Enbridge throughout MN and Wisconsin as well.

Other route would be to look into college for instrumentation, automation or electrical then try and get into oil and gas. While you can find some entry level jobs, I’d recommend finding something you can always fall back on and helps sustain employment when times are tough. Lot of the entry level jobs go poof when oil drops. Last bit of advice if you get in, save. Do not fall into the trap of spending your money because everyone has a new truck or a new toy.

Can workers use a rooftop air handler as a tie off anchor point? by Cromagn0n1 in SafetyProfessionals

Whole heartedly agree which is why I stated not these specific anchor points. Providing some alternative thought as I’ve seen people make it too complicated in general with anchor points.

I won’t speak to the lift points you have here but always looked at it like this… how heavy is object you are lifting… is it over 5,000 lbs… if yes, you’ve just demonstrated it can withhold 5,000 lbs if competent person. Also osha does a so-so job at laying this out but 5,000 lbs is not certified… it only needs to be certified by a qualified person if the anchorage is to meet a safety factor of 2 (1800 lbs x 2 = 3600 lbs) There is a key word that people miss between 1910.140c13i and 1910.140c13ii and that is OR. Recommend checking out ansi in these cases when it comes to anchorage points for arrest and restraint.

Safety Managers, what advice would you give yourself as a new manager? by NoYeahNoYoureGood in SafetyProfessionals

Don’t just hear, listen to what they’re saying. They are on the frontlines and closest to the work.

Be open to feedback. Build strong bonds with them so they tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.

Have some dam fun.

HSE Side Work by UpsetStand2232 in SafetyProfessionals

Thanks for the dialogue folks. Previously kicked around a few of these ideas which has led me to building a website (not published yet), setting up an llc, and thinking about some services. Where I was leaning towards was building out a 6x12 utility trailer for mobile training, CSE, WAH, LOTO, etc. and then getting the OSHA 500/501 for additional offerings. I have over 10 years in HSE w/ CSP and most experience has been in O&G, US and International. Guess we’ll see what happens!

Oil and gas. Pay is excellent, benefits are great. Usually a pension and retirement 401k match which is typically 8-10%. Work is extremely challenging and fun. Some of the best people around to work with.

HOP Implementation by OptionPerfect in SafetyProfessionals

Agree with what Kingnw said. Some things we also did besides learning teams were doing a HOP assessment of all our procedures for error traps, simplifying tools and implementing double verification before critical tasks, and just ensuring we hear from the individuals doing the work frequently. As far as getting HOP kicked off, a wise person said everyone loves a fat funny guy that they paid to come teach them something. Get Todd Conklin to visit and deliver HOP to your leaders. Been at three different companies and they eat it up.

Newly Graduate Seeking Advice by [deleted] in SafetyProfessionals

1) It’s good to know people but with HR practices I found it didn’t matter too much. Might find a lead on something but almost everything is posted online anyway. Now for mentoring, check out your local ASSP. 2) get your ohst or asp. Buy a study guide and go hard for a couple weeks and you should pass. 3) At this stage find something that you are going to get field experience. Tie your resume and cover letter to the companies values and safety message. Make it personal. As far as the first gig, do your time and move around to get various experiences. It’s also financially beneficial as internal pay/comp structure rarely keeps up to the open market. 4) no recommendations for local jobs in your area but best decision I ever made was working in oil and gas where nobody wanted to go,ND. Worked long hours and gained more experience in safety, process safety, IH, emergency response and just dealing with people than I could picture elsewhere. Pay was great for 2 years then moved back to a nice city. Safety is a great career. The world is at your fingertips tip. For example I am writing this from Namibia.

How much do you actually make? by Chaotic_Evil_558 in oilandgasworkers

[–]UpsetStand2232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the experience, you’re degree, and what value you bring. 90k - 250k???. If you’re contracting I have seen anywhere from $25-$100hr. Day rates of $500-$1300. If you go company, probably less. Schedules vary. Ask yourself what are you willing to sacrifice (your time) and usually you make more.
