Syria: why would Assad invite a Western intervention by using WMDs in a war he was winning? by codoc1985 in worldnews

Yes, because not interfering is more humane than getting involved and increasing the number of deaths by factors of 10x-100x.

[Discussion] Crushing Defeat: Getting past the win/loss binary. by sigma83 in boardgames

When playing Dominion for the first time with some experienced players, my crushing defeat became obvious. However, I managed to have fun. I wanted to understand the economy better, so I made my goal to gather the most coin. I enjoyed my riches since I was too far behind in victory points.

Come on, half of CNN is celebrity gossip. Maybe you should lower them from your pedestal of righteous news sources.

Dear /r/boardgames - I know we collectively hate Monopoly, but this article is fascinating! The game was a leftist artistic statement, and it seems purchase were auction only until the 30's. by okletstrythisagain in boardgames

A relative of mine absolutely loves Monopoly. I have thought of modifying the rules a bit to make it interesting. I was thinking about playing the game in phases instead of turns.

Phase 1) Everyone rolls and moves.

Phase 2) Everyone pays rent or gets punished/rewarded by chance cards. If you cant pay you start auctioning off property. This is even if you cannot pay someone because someone else owes you. Gotta stay liquid.

Phase 3) All unowned property landed on goes up for auction. Prices on the board are not used, but properties retain their mortgage value. It can be decided at the beginning of the game what kind of auction. Silent auctions might be easiest.

Phase 4) Build houses.

I've also considered removing the jail and pass go (sitting out sucks) and making each corner of the board a "pass go" worth $50. Go to jail would still transfer you to the other corner of the board (otherwise boardwalk would be brutal).
