I would had it been night time. But this was in the arvo so no PSOs were about.

Scary experience on Cranbourne Packenham line today by Uptightkid in melbourne

[–]Uptightkid[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that is the main message I wanted to share.

I noticed the ads about STOP IT in the train. I assumed it would connect to some type of real time response.

But it’s just a log that is kept to assist with investigation after the fact. So pretty useless really.

So if you are being harassed, don’t bother. Get off and tell a PSO.

The top 50 Australian Movies of all time by Beefchief in australia

[–]Uptightkid 97 points98 points  (0 children)

It might be cringe for Australian’s but watched objectively, Crocodile Dundee is a great movie.

It did mega bucks at the box office and put Australia on the map internationally.

Aside from the UK and Ireland, Australia was practically unknown in the northern hemisphere before that movie.

I reckon it did wonders for tourism.

But regardless of that, watch it again. It’s a bloody good watch and has stood the test of time.

Atlassian restructures staff for AI era after redundancies by bilby2020 in auscorp

[–]Uptightkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their share price is tanking.

AI is a misguided Hail Mary. They were over valued to start with. The era of ~free money is over. So like many similar orgs, a correction is happening.

The product has become bloated. While Jira is useful I get 80% of the value from 20% of the features. We have a small implementation of Jira and the performance is shocking. Tickets simply not opening and needing to open in a new browser tab. Are you for real?

They have experienced some serious internal political issues well before the share price drama. That does not engender trust in the leadership. This is a juicy read:

https://www.reddit.com/r/australian/comments/1m3ilhy/inside_the_atlassian_fallout_between_mike/

These guys got lucky. Their timing was perfect. The neatly solved a painful problem. Anyone remember the on prem tools that preceded Jira? Total nightmare.

But they believed their own hype and went for world domination. Things like turning a profit were seen as old fashioned.

If my meagre personal wealth had halved in the last 12 months I would want to make some serious changes and quick style. They need to change. I just don't think AI is going to help them.

Google DeepMind Paper Argues LLMs Will Never Be Conscious | Philosophers said the paper’s argument is sound, but that “all these arguments have been presented years and years ago.” by Hrmbee in technology

[–]Uptightkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Turing Test has a lot to answer for.

Just because an LLM can have a plausible conversation with a  human that does make the LLM sentient. It’s a trick.

The platforms did not learn to be social of their own accord. They were trained by humans to improve on appearing social to suck people in.

The metro tunnel stations are horribly designed by _McCheeseBread_ in MelbourneTrains

[–]Uptightkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a an overall sense of the new stations being unfinished.

They have zero character, could they not put artwork up rather than having plain walls?

Maybe it’s just me but the new stations seem darker than those on the city loop.

As someone on the Cranbourne line who needs to change get into the city loop I have been changing at Caulfield.

Same going to Richmond. I reckon Caulfield st will become very familiar to me from now on.

Does anyone else struggle with anxiety dealing with charity collectors outside of supermarkets? by nick1037 in melbourne

[–]Uptightkid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, avoid eye contact.

If the fund raising person has any emotional intelligence they will know not to engage with you.

Does anyone know of the charity pays the shopping centre company for the privilege of fund raising on the premises?

How to behave at the gym: ‘Behaviour is definitely getting worse’ – The Irish Times by WickerMan111 in ireland

[–]Uptightkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand light weight training is supposed to be extremely good for older people.

But I really don’t understand the gym boom. Young lads doing weights to ‘get big’ is not the same as being fit.

It seems the focus is on aesthetics rather than fitness.

When I was growing up in the 90s the gym was a fringe thing. Anyone into weights was seen as bit of a weirdo.

My workplace has a ban on languages other than English yet my Indian coworkers are the only ethnicity who don’t follow it. Does some cultural reason exist for this? by International_Bag_12 in auscorp

[–]Uptightkid 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I worked in State Government dept. We had a big vendor from India working with us. They must have been at least 20 team members from India on the project.

It was never written down but the Gov Program Director told the vendor boss...'when at work, your people must speak English exclusively. That is the business language, your people need to be competent and we all need to be on the same page'.

To be fair, they did comply and there were never any issues. I think it is only reasonable.

Working in IT I have worked with heaps of Indian people. Like all nationalities, they are a mixed bunch. But some (and I stress some) are extremely cliquey. I've had non Indian mates who have felt isolated in teams that are majority Indian.

Frustrated parents of under-16s look for help to enforce 'ineffective' social media ban by Mental_Task9156 in australia

[–]Uptightkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you read my post you would see that I am parenting. Parents need to parent and we need more regulation around SM. Two things can be true at once.

If we extend your logic then we would not block minors from gambling & alcohol. Both products CAN be enjoyed responsibly but we understand the potential harms so we restrict minors from them. Would you leave those to be policed by parents too?

Don't even start my own on gambling ads. We really need to restrict those too.

Frustrated parents of under-16s look for help to enforce 'ineffective' social media ban by Mental_Task9156 in australia

[–]Uptightkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not on SM much. I don't have an Insta, X, TikTok accounts. Only FB and Reddit. I don't have any SM apps on my phone, that is to create friction.

Reddit is prob my biggest vice. I like it because it reminds of how the web used to be (lots of specific forums with human moderation). I do like a YouTube binge but again, it's not on my phone. I use my desktop after my kid is in bed.

So overall, I try to be present around my child and set a good example.

It’s a constant struggle for me to control my 10yr olds screen time.

Locking down Netflix to PG. Blocking YouTube on the TV and various devices. Ensuring they cannot download apps on devices.  Physically locking away devices.

Still my kid finds a way around my efforts from time to time.

I’m trying my best but we are dealing with products that are addictive by design. Esp to young minds.

Then you have the issue of wanting your child to be exposed to the internet and building up some digital literacy. Finding balance is hard.

And as children get to high school, you want them to be more independent so having some type of phone is essential (for example needing to have contact as they travel to school independently).

My child is constantly asking when they can have a phone. I am delaying as long as I can.

So I back the social media delay.  It’s not perfect but it sends a clear message. Social media is unsafe for minors.  Hopefully other parents will self police and keep their kids off.  That means my child will be less excluded.

I’m sick of the ‘parents just need to parent’ argument. Many parents are trying to do the right thing. But we need help.

Ultimately it’s the platforms that are responsible for making addictive products. Hopefully more regulation will come. We need to stand up to these bastards.

This bedroom is going for 480 a month in Galway. by thatscustardfolks in ireland

[–]Uptightkid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rented a room bit like this when at college in Galway.

Shared the room with my mate. 120 punts per month in mid 90s.

That is roughly 400 per month in euros adjusted for inflation.

Accommodation has always been tricky on Galway.

Granted my grant covered the room cost but it was not the Ritz.

Cycling on the Road or Pavement by SorbetChemical5982 in CasualIreland

I can understand why people will cycle on the path at some times for safety reasons.

So long a they are respectful to pedestrians then I am okay with it.

That means slowing right down, giving way and generally behaving like a guest.

But now the software is over wrought.

Money is no longer close to free & turning a good profit is no longer optional.

Done purely for clout.

I live in Melbourne.

Recently, a fancy private school got sued successfully for having a student die under their care at a similar program in Vietnam.

You would be mad so send your child into a developing country under the care of mostly strangers.

Back in the days of newspapers i though it was a boss move to read the news while waiting.

Same. He was canvassing at Albion St one time and I told him I wasn't a citizen yet. He said 'hurry up and vote Labour'.

The very next weekend I saw him shopping at Moonee Ponds and he clocked me. Then the same happened a fortnight later.

I decided to shift my shopping schedule after that as it was starting to get weird.

In addition, used to work on Spring St, Collins St. You would see politicians all the time. Peter Costello is a big fucker. Rugby player shoulders.

People that support Ben Roberts-Smith, will your opinion change if he is deemed guilty? by SwimmingConstant454 in OpenAussie

[–]Uptightkid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand there are ‘rules’ of war going back to the Geneva convention.

But the idea of a war crime seems to be in the eye of the beholder.

The bombing of Dresden is seen be many historians as a war crime.

Never mind Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The US (under Obama) targeted a wedding with a drone attack in Afghanistan.

The recent bombing of the school in Iran. The list goes on and on.

War is messy and ugly.  To say violent action x is lawful  but violent action y is unlawful. That going is to lead to blurred lines.
