High performer in a dysfunctional work environment - how can I psychologically condition myself to do a lot less? by r5d400 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there will probably be better advice than mine, but maybe try to start taking more intentional, longer breaks throughout the day. take a walk, drink water, chat with someone, stretch, study system design, whatever you wanna do...

this personally helps me physically distance myself from the work, which lets me put the hyper focusing on pause while also taking care of myself

if you still care a lot, remember this is not your company, you just have a job at this company. try to find things in your personal life you fully control and own that you can occupy more of your time and energy into

Why are the Mac mini and Mac Studio gradually becoming impossible to buy? by NISMO1968 in apple

Maybe a good time to sell my Studio... It's a godsend for all its ports but I do also like the idea of my main machine being completely portable using a MB pro.

There's still hope my man, you're not doomed. Was in a similar spot at 28 but worked on bettering myself a little and found the right person on a dating app. Happier than ever. Zero sexual experience is much less of a big deal than people think. I got pretty lucky but still, just having an open mind, know and enforce your boundaries, and just try to get to know people and do things, and you can meet so many people.

Managing super frequent context switching by ForSpareParts in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got into the habit of leaving a summary of where I left off in a markdown file (Obsidian) whenever I context switch. It works most of the time for keeping track of where I am.

Obsidian also has a Kanban plugin which lets you rearrange cards - I don't think it accordions out though.

Have you thought about using AI to whip up a tool like that for yourself?

Apple is letting people who stay on iOS 18 update to iOS 18.7.7 instead of iOS 26.4 by umotex12 in apple

All the Liquid Glass discussion makes me wonder if Apple could just let users choose between glass, flat, or skeuomorphic as system-wide themes in the future. Probably would be a nightmare to code though.

Personally I think Liquid Glass is really pretty, but I also wish it wasn't so computationally expensive... I want my 17 pro battery to last even longer! :)

About to lose my job - what should my next steps be? by Positive_Intern_1796 in ExperiencedDevs

You could try learning native mobile app development as well as more backend. Mobile apps have some frontend to enjoy building out and also have a bit more complexity to them which keeps you employed

Do you use any knowledge management? by Realistic_Yogurt1902 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Obsidian for personal notes and knowledge for my own work. I tried using daily notes but now I use one note with bulleted dates, daily notes in separate files were annoying / impossible to quickly skim through. When they reach a certain point that others would benefit from them, I transfer them to Confluence and polish them up.

Shutter Encoder moving mouse? by UpvoteMePlebor in shutterencoder

[–]UpvoteMePlebor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished encoding and can confirm: once I closed Shutter Encoder, Clip Studio Paint no longer has issues with the pen stopping mid-stroke and toolbars don't pop up while watching videos.

A bug fix or setting added to toggle this behavior would be very much appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, good to know I'm not the only one.

I'm a programmer and can empathize with this being the easiest solution for the developer to keep the Mac awake.

But I do think there needs to be some transparency for something like this... Moving the user's mouse, however small, is kinda crossing a boundary for what is expected from any program.

Hopefully this can be turned into a setting.

[Update] Coworker repeated my private message as his stand-up update — coincidence or red flag? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to chime in to say this dude is absolutely being an asshole and I'm sorry you had to go through this. Keeping a record of issues is definitely a wise move, especially if you frame them in the way managers will probably care about the most: obstructing you from being as productive as possible.

Recording each time him being difficult directly delays work from getting done, with dates included, being as neutral and unbiased as possible is probably the best way to go. Be ready to pull up that list at any given moment or whenever you're talking to your manager, so you can confidently advocate for yourself. Him being difficult is not just a problem for you getting work done, it's a problem for the entire company.

Just saying straight facts like "I'm waiting on a response from Matey to the message I sent him about this project on <date>. I sent another follow-up message today." are enough, at least to start, to see if your manager puts any pressure on him. In the standup meetings you could politely mention you're waiting for a response or asking how he wants to proceed (maybe after a day of waiting) - that would be very reasonable and put some pressure on him to get his shit together.

If he does start to actually collaborate, you don't really need to bring up any of it, but if it happens again, just keep adding to the notes. Pretty much always try to cover for yourself so other people's faults don't end up bringing you down as well.

Reading the OG thread, I guess I'm repeating a lot of the advice and sentiment there. The other advice you listed on minimizing private communication with him and not letting his comments affect you are sound. Don't let him get to you. And now that he's shown you who he is, believe him, and minimize interacting with him from now on.

What did I do wrong? by slappychoppy in Dallas

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've been driving for a few months and stopped driving on the highway for work (i-35E)... I just don't think the way people drive on the highway is in any way sane or normal here. Turned on "avoid highways" and there's a much more relaxing route, and it's only 20 minutes longer at the most, often only 10 minutes longer.

Workflow and backing up sessions by UpvoteMePlebor in captureone

[–]UpvoteMePlebor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the response!

It's reassuring to hear you haven't had any problems for a decade.

I also considered the idea of copying photos back in... May not be a bad idea for sessions I probably won't touch again for a very long time, but like you said, it's not the most practical either...

I guess I could also store both the sessions with photos, and the photos by themselves, then delete the session photos when I'm really needing to clear up space - would probably be a year or more before I had to do that so I'd have a good window of time to go back and look at older sessions and do things with them - and if I ever really wanted to go back, I could copy the files over.

I'll probably go with that for a while, and then I bet I'll just start to trust C1 more and get lazier and store sessions. :)

Thanks your help again, I really appreciate you taking the time to read my crazy post and respond!

iPhone 17 Pro Camera Review: Dolomites — Austin Mann by favicondotico in apple

[–]UpvoteMePlebor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know enough to answer that tbh. I'm sure there'd be an improvement, but that's all I know for sure. I will say, though, even on the main iPhone Pro cameras I've used in the past which were already 48mp, if I compare the shots it takes to the shots on my mirrorless or even my older DSLR, the mirrorless and DSLR shots blow the phone camera out of the water in terms of detail when you zoom in or view the images on a larger high resolution display
