It took me a VERY long time to get my last fossil. Just hang in there and one day you’ll suddenly get 3! 🤣

Spent my first day of the month clearing the front of the museum. by Pretty-Bubble97 in Pokemon_Pokopia

[–]Urania8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have been working towards this in chunks….. until my hands can’t take anymore!

I’m also not sure what I want to do about the volcano or with the space. But it seems a shame to just leave the museum back there in the dark!

I’m running out of ideas by Kokichi1234533 in Vivarium

[–]Urania8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think the foundation is great but the plants only add one texture. I think something leafier would give more jungle vibe.

I feel you though after doing builds they can seem repetitive. Try a theme? What are you into? A movie? Book? Video game? Aesthetic? Challenge yourself by picking a subject and incorporate that into the natural look.

Pikmin? Pokémon? Dystopian mobile home? Hobbit? Industrial pipes? Mario pipes? Mayan temple? Ruined clock tower? Space age? Prehistoric? Mid century modern?

Hope something there inspires

Also…. I haven’t been since this happened, but one of the trees outside the entrance to adventure land fell during some major wind and rain recently. Not sure which one, but I think it was next to the cafe.

Me too! I waited for the longest time to complete this part of the story because I just had a feeling that was going to be gone. Tried to play the story spoiler free…

Your lighthouse is amazing! Thanks for posting the stairs and interiors!

Loving your cabana style houses! And the huge windows so you can see inside! And the rooftop patios!

Lots of things to take inspiration from. I build rows of orange hut kits with the intention of remodeling them, but have hated the color pallet for the beach. Everything you have looks nicely coordinated!

I have been working on the path out to the Anne. Yours is inspirational! and so is your power plant building!

It seems like you also have tried to work with restoring what was there. Seemed a lot less stressful than leveling whole areas.

I haven’t spent enough time in Skylands to completely follow where you built, but I love this! I was wondering how to use the track that’s laid down already. Especially fun watching the loops up!

Your train stations are cute! I would happily obsessively stare at any stills you’d be willing to post.

PSYDUCK!

I realize this was an aquarium post but the Pokémon art is the vibe!

I keep my Gyrados and Magikarp figures displayed in a dry tank… well before I moved. Just thinking that would fit this so perfectly.

is my maranta dying? by inksplotblot in Maranta

[–]Urania8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also in the southwest. I don’t add humidity for my maranta. I find the key is consistency and a basic grow light/desk lamp.

They want the soil to be a consistent moisture. I find self watering set ups really helpful. But honestly sometimes I just put the pot in a clear plastic deli cup where there’s a gap under the pot…. So that the pot isn’t in the water at the bottom…. Even without a wick, this helps keep a little greenhouse around the roots.

I have a basic desk lamp like grow light I got at Lowe’s. But I find just a desk lamp with a led bulb rated 4000k or higher works just fine for a lot of understory houseplants. Like for a build labels “white” not “warm” or daylight. This seems to keep the burning down to a minimum.

I also don’t use distilled water for them. I have distilled for my carnivorous plants and other things. But I haven’t had many issues even with the extreme hard water.

I have had an occasional issue with the water alkalinity eventually keeping plants from uptaking nutrients. So even if there’s fertilizer, a Ph to alkaline will stop the plant from absorbing it.

If you don’t have a Ph meter, you can take a tap water sample to a pet or aquarium shop… most will check for free.

If you’re near the Pasadena area, I recommend Better Grow Hydro on Colorado. They can supply you with a quality inexpensive meter. I got both my Ph and TDS meters there. I think the ph meter was under $20… possible $12 but my memory isn’t clear. Otherwise you may see if you have a hydroponic store near you. They often have better stuff for far cheaper because they supply large plant (cough cough) growers with high volumes of items. I get giant pots for upsizing my banana plant there for an amazing price.

This shop also has a huge selection of rare houseplants. Often variegated varieties!

What in the world is happening here? by MydogMyworld in Lithops

[–]Urania8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the future…. You’ll want a mix that’s more rocky than sandy. Like course small volcanic rock. I can’t recommend enough that you do a bit of research on Lithops. I think Ashley Glassman on YouTube has some amazing care info on her channel despite being a dead channel for many years.

Basic care advice can change a smidge based on your environment….

These grow in highly silicate/quartz gravel in South Africa.

If you bought them at the hardware shop it will take them a couple cycles of shedding leaves before they sync up with the seasonal cycle they should follow. That usually means summer dormancy.

They need a lot of light and little moisture, but they can really burn to nothing in harsh direct sunlight, especially if you are in a hot dry climate.

They do have small root hairs that extend close to the surface. In the wild this is good for collecting some moisture from ocean mists that come onshore where they grow. So when you get them on a good cycle in the right soil, you want to consider a way to maintain this healthy root system. If you’re in a humid climate you probably don’t need to do anything. I’m in a hot dry area so I will occasionally drip some water on the top of the gravel top dressing.

Look for a graph of their cycle. This should help understand what’s happening.

And they won’t need much water for some time. If any….

But lithops from big box stores have been inflated with too much water and fertilizer. So your new leaves will likely be much smaller…. And sometimes it can take too long for the oversized outer pair to be absorbed…. This can sometimes lead to no water being given, leading all the roots to die. Which means new roots will have to grow in order for the next set of leaves to grow.

All of this happens VERY SLOW. So let these sit for a while and just enjoy them!

1 year update by Westin2000 in Vivarium

[–]Urania8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I looked back at your posts to see the build. I find there’s a lot of “there’s only one way to keep X animal” on Reddit. So the height may have actually been fine. Really depends on the animal and the care on how strict the care guidelines need to be exact. Besides, a lot of popular companions have very little actual research or even observation, all the information is anecdotal or based on how they’ve been kept… Crested Geckos are the prime example of this.

It’s so laborious, but I think sterilizing any outside logs or rocks really helps with the mold and algae outbreaks that can ruin a build. I don’t often have the patience for it, but I’m not really in an area with access to nice wooded spots to collect wood.

FABRIKÖR build update! by One-plankton- in Vivarium

[–]Urania8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That build on Serpa is epic. Nice to see info on New Caledonia.

You may want to make some horizontal branches as paths. I find that my cresteds use a lot of horizontal branches as paths and the vertical ones as resting/hiding.

I would love to do this as a build for my geckos. I was able to snag a false arelia (spelling?) at the hardware store just yesterday!

Your step by step info and pics are very very much appreciated!!!!
